Chapter 14 - The Summit

Seven days passed like water through fingers.

Each morning, I woke with Ren beside me, his warmth grounding me in the strange new reality of being whole. Each day, I trained with the army, reviewed reports, oversaw the production of more muskets. Each evening, I met with Tanaka to refine the plan.

The summit would be a gamble.

But I'd gambled before. With my life. With my identity. With everything.

This was no different.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[SUMMIT DAY]

[CLAN LEADERS ARRIVING: 7 EXPECTED]

[SUCCESS CHANCE: 78%]

[RECOMMENDED: MAINTAIN CALM, OBSERVE, STRIKE AT OPTIMAL MOMENT]

The first to arrive was Lord Takeda Haruki himself.

He rode through the gates with a small retinue, his smile as polished as his armor. Behind him came a man I didn't recognize—older, harder, with eyes like winter steel.

"My Lady." Haruki bowed. "Allow me to present Lord Kageyama of the Northern Wolves. He speaks for the clans."

Kageyama didn't bow. Just nodded. Assessed me with those cold eyes.

"You're younger than I expected."

"And you're older than I expected." I smiled. "Shall we begin?"

The great hall had been transformed.

Long tables arranged in a square. Refreshments laid out. Soldiers lining the walls—muskets visible, but not aimed. A show of strength wrapped in hospitality.

By midday, all seven clan leaders had arrived.

I knew them from the game. Knew their histories, their rivalries, their weaknesses. But this was real now. Their eyes held calculation, not code.

Haruki sat at my right, playing the role of mediator. Ren stood behind me, silent and watchful. Tanaka commanded the soldiers.

Kageyama opened the negotiations.

"Let us speak plainly, Lady Kaito. Your domain has grown powerful. Your weapons are... unusual. The clans have watched with interest."

"Interest," I repeated. "Or concern?"

"Both." He leaned forward. "We seek alliance, not subjugation. Mutual benefit, not conquest."

"And what benefit do the clans offer me?"

"Trade routes. Military support. Recognition of your borders." He listed them like items on a menu. "In exchange, we ask for access to your weapons. Training for our soldiers. A pledge of non-aggression."

Silence.

I let it stretch.

Then I laughed.

Softly. Almost gently.

Kageyama's eyes narrowed.

"You find this amusing, Lady?"

"I find it... predictable." I stood. Walked slowly around the table. "You come here offering alliance while your armies gather at my borders. You speak of peace while planning war."

Haruki's smile flickered. "That's a serious accusation."

"It's a fact." I stopped behind Kageyama. "My scouts watched your camps grow. My spies read your messages. You never intended alliance. You intended to weaken me with diplomacy while your forces prepared to strike."

The hall went still.

Kageyama's hand moved toward his sword.

Tanaka's soldiers raised their muskets.

"No," I said calmly. "Let him."

Kageyama froze.

"You're inside my walls. Surrounded by soldiers with weapons you've never seen. Even if you killed me now, you'd never leave this room alive." I leaned closer. "So let's try again. What do you really want?"

Long silence.

Then Kageyama's shoulders sagged—barely perceptibly.

"Survival," he said quietly.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[DIPLOMATIC BREAKTHROUGH]

[KAGEYAMA'S TRUE INTENTION: FEAR OF EXTINCTION]

[NORTHERN CLANS ARE WEAKER THAN THEY APPEAR]

[NEW OPTION: OFFER PROTECTION INSTEAD OF CONQUEST]

I returned to my seat.

"Explain."

Kageyama stared at the table. The other clan leaders shifted uneasily.

"Our lands are dying," he said. "The soil is exhausted. The winters grow harsher. Our people starve while your domain prospers." He looked up. "We didn't want war. We wanted what you have. But we knew you wouldn't share."

"So you planned to take it."

"Yes."

Honest. At least.

I considered.

Hiroshi's empathy warred with Kaito's pragmatism. But they were one now.

"If I offered you food. Supplies. Land to farm." I paused. "What would you offer in return?"

Kageyama blinked. "You would... help us?"

"I would make you allies. True allies. Not vassals. Not subjects. Partners." I gestured at the room. "Your clans have warriors, knowledge of the north, resources I lack. I have food, weapons, stability. Together, we could be stronger than any enemy."

Silence stretched.

Haruki's smile had vanished entirely.

"You would trust us?" Kageyama asked.

"No." I smiled. "But I would give you reason to trust me. And I would watch carefully enough that betrayal becomes impossible."

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[DIPLOMATIC SUCCESS: NORTHERN CLANS CONSIDERING GENUINE ALLIANCE]

[LOYALTY GAIN: +30% WITH KAGEYAMA]

[NEW ALLIANCE POTENTIAL: HIGH]

[WARNING: HARUKI'S REACTION UNKNOWN]

Haruki stood abruptly.

"This is madness! You would abandon the plan? Betray the clans' agreement?"

Kageyama looked at him coldly. "The agreement was yours, Haruki. You spoke of easy victory. You lied."

"I did not—"

"You did." Kageyama rose. "You said she was weak. Naive. Easy to manipulate." He glanced at me. "You were wrong."

Haruki's hand went to his sword.

Tanaka's soldiers aimed.

"Don't," I said quietly.

Haruki froze.

"Leave," I told him. "Return to whatever corner of the north spawned you. Tell your masters that the clans have chosen a different path."

He stared at me with hatred burning in his eyes.

Then he turned and walked out.

No one stopped him.

The hall exhaled.

Kageyama sank back into his seat.

"You've made an enemy today."

"I've made many." I poured tea. Offered him a cup. "The question is whether I've made friends too."

He took the cup. Drank.

"We'll need to discuss terms."

"We will. But not today." I stood. "Today, you and your people are guests. Rest. Eat. Tomorrow, we begin."

That night, Ren found me on the tower.

The moon was full. The air cold.

"You took a risk," he said.

"I take risks."

"Trusting them."

I turned to him. "I'm not trusting them. I'm giving them a better option than war. People choose what serves them."

"And if they choose wrong?"

I touched his face.

"Then we'll be ready."

He pulled me close.

"Sometimes I forget you're not just her anymore. Or him. You're something else entirely."

"Something good?"

"Something mine."

I smiled.

"Always."
