Chapter 13 - “The Hidden Betrayal”

"Look, I don't know why all this is happening to us or who is behind it. But I don't believe in ghosts or spirits. Whatever happened to me while going to Mussoorie, I think it was just my stress."

"Oh really? Alka was with you in Mussoorie too, right? So was she also under stress?"

"Yaar Vijay, just think—do you really believe that whatever is happening to us is possible for a normal human?"

"So what do you want?"

"First Vishal, then Ravi, and now Vinay… we've lost three of our friends. Now only the three of us are left. If we want to save our lives, we'll have to meet a powerful tantric. Only he can tell us what's really going on. If it's a spirit, we'll know. And if it's not, we'll still find out. At least we won't live in constant fear—wondering when and where that half-burnt man will appear again and scare us like a ghost."

"And if it really is a spirit, that tantric will save us. And if it's a human… then we'll hunt him down even from the depths of hell and tear him into pieces."

"Vijay, I also think Ajay is right. We should consider this angle too."

"Look, I don't know where you both got this nonsense from, but if you suspect something, I have no problem."

"Thanks, yaar. But where will we find such a tantric?"

"In Kolkata. At Nimtala Ghat, many powerful tantrics come who are experts in solving such problems."

"What happened to your language?"

"Oh, I just slipped into a different tone for a moment…"

"But how do you know all this?"

"I have a friend in Kolkata. He told me everything."

"So when are we leaving for Kolkata?"

"You both go. I'll stay here and try to find out something."

"No way. You're coming with us."

"But—"

"No 'but.' We can't leave you alone like this. What if, like Ravi and Vinay, someone records your death and sends it to us? We can't take that risk."

"Okay."

Vijay returns home, but Alka is still there. She prepares a nice meal for him and as soon as he arrives—

"Welcome, my sweet Vijay. Go wash up quickly, then we'll eat together."

"What's all this for?"

"What do you mean 'for'? I thought you've been so disturbed lately, so I should do something to reduce your stress. So I made a nice meal for you."

She gently pushes him from behind with affection.

"Go on."

Vijay smiles, changes his clothes, and comes downstairs. But while coming down, he slips on the stairs and twists his leg.

Hearing the noise, Alka rushes to him.

"Vijay! What happened?"

She helps him to the sofa and tries to call a doctor, but Vijay stops her.

"Alka, leave it. No need to call anyone. I can treat myself. Just bring the first-aid box from my drawer."

Alka immediately goes to his room, stands in front of the mirror, and starts applying lipstick.

Vijay calls out, "Alka! Didn't you find the box?"

"No, Vijay, I couldn't find it."

"Look properly. It's in the right-side drawer beside the bed."

"Oh yes, got it. Coming."

She slowly comes downstairs and hands him the box.

"Where were you?"

"Sorry, Vijay… I couldn't find it."

"There's a bone spray in it. Take it out."

"Okay."

Vijay applies the spray, and then both of them sit together and eat.

Alka thinks to herself:

"Seems like I didn't pour enough oil on the stairs… his bone didn't even break."

While talking, Alka also finds out that Vijay is going to Kolkata, and she insists on going with him.

"No, Alka. I'm going there for important work. I can't take you with me."

"I'm not going to disturb your work. You do your work, I'll do mine."

She gently caresses his shoulder.

"Please, Vijay… take me with you. What will I do here without you?"

"But Alka—"

"No 'but.' If I don't go, then don't ever talk to me again."

"Alright, fine."

Vijay agrees, but he doesn't want Alka to face any danger. So early in the morning, without telling her, he leaves for Kolkata in his car.

When Alka wakes up, she goes to his room but he's not there. She searches the whole house.

When she doesn't find him, she asks the servant—

"Baba, where is Vijay?"

"Madam, he left early in the morning with his car."

"Did he take his bags too?"

"Yes."

"So that means Vijay went to Kolkata without taking me."

Alka gets very angry at him. She returns to her house, where Ravi is still tied up, hungry and thirsty.

Just then, her phone starts ringing.
