Chapter 27 - Longer

I stayed home longer than I planned.

One night turned into two. Two turned into almost a week.

At first, it felt like relief.

Sleeping in my own bed. Eating food I didn't have to think about. Hearing my mom moving around the house instead of the constant noise of campus.

It was quieter.

Softer.

Safer.

But even at home, something didn't fully settle.

I still checked my phone too often.

Still saw Ryan's name pop up in my head when it shouldn't.

Still thought about campus without meaning to.

And worse…

I thought about Ethan.

Not in a clear way.

Not in a way I could explain.

Just random moments.

The lake.

The coffee cup he handed me.

The way he said my name when he left.

It annoyed me that I was thinking about it at all.

Because it didn't mean anything.

It shouldn't mean anything.

But it still showed up in my mind when everything else was quiet.

One afternoon, my mom knocked softly on my door.

"You've been quiet since you came back," she said gently. "Is everything okay at school?"

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

"It's fine."

She studied me for a moment, like she didn't believe me, but she didn't push.

Instead, she just said, "You don't have to rush back if you're not ready."

I looked down at my hands.

"I think I should."

She nodded slowly.

"Okay."

That was it.

No pressure.

No questions.

Just space.

And somehow that made my chest feel heavier.

Because I realized I did need to go back.

Not because I was okay.

But because running away didn't actually fix anything.

The return to campus felt different.

Same buildings.

Same paths.

Same noise.

But I wasn't the same person who left.

I stood outside the dorm building for a moment before going in, watching students walk past me like I was just another background figure in their day.

Then I finally went upstairs.

The hallway was familiar now.

My room door felt the same.

I opened it slowly.

Chloe was there, sitting on her bed with headphones in.

She looked up immediately when I walked in.

"Oh my gosh," she said, pulling them off. "You're back."

I nodded.

"Yeah."

She sat up straighter.

"Are you okay?"

I hesitated.

Then gave a small shrug.

"I think so."

She studied me for a second, then nodded like she accepted that answer for now.

"Good," she said softly. "It was weird without you here."

That surprised me a little.

I didn't know what to say to that.

So I just put my bag down quietly.

The room felt… different again.

Not empty like before.

But changed.

Like something had paused and started again without me.

I sat on my bed and stared at my phone for a moment.

Still no new messages that mattered.

Still nothing from Lily.

Still nothing I felt ready to open from Ryan.

I locked it again.

And for the first time since leaving campus, I realized something clearly.

Going home didn't fix the loneliness.

It just gave it a quieter place to sit.
