Chapter 28 - Annoyed

Back on campus, life picked up again like I had never left.

Classes. Dorm. Walks between buildings. The same rhythm, just with a different weight now.

Something in me had shifted after going home.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like I had stepped back far enough to finally see things a little clearer.

Chloe and I still weren't close, but things were slightly easier now. We shared small conversations sometimes—food, assignments, random campus gossip—but nothing deep. It was still two separate lives in one room.

And that was fine.

Or at least… I was learning to accept it.

Then Ryan started texting more.

At first, I noticed it only because the notifications became more frequent.

Then I actually opened the chat.

Why are you not opening my reels?

A few hours later:

You've been acting weird lately.

Then:

Did I do something?

I stared at the messages for a while without replying.

Because the truth was simple.

Nothing he was saying felt important to me anymore.

It didn't hurt the way it used to.

It didn't confuse me.

It just… annoyed me.

Another message came in the next day.

You don't even text me anymore. You don't ask how I'm doing.

Then another:

Are you mad at me or something?

I exhaled slowly and sat on my bed.

Chloe was out again, the room quiet except for distant hallway noise.

I unlocked my phone and stared at his name.

For a long time.

Trying to find something inside me that used to react to him.

Sadness. Hope. Confusion. Anything.

But there was nothing.

Just silence.

And a kind of tired acceptance.

I typed slowly.

I've just been busy with my assignments.

Paused.

Then sent it.

Nothing else.

No explanation.

No emotion.

Just that.

I locked my phone and set it aside.

A few seconds later, it buzzed again.

But I didn't pick it up.

Because I already knew what it would be.

More questions.

More assumptions.

More versions of a relationship I wasn't really inside anymore.

And I didn't feel the need to fix it.

Not anymore.

I leaned back on my bed and stared at the ceiling.

It was strange.

I used to wait for his messages.

Used to overthink every reel he sent.

Used to wonder what he meant.

Now… I just felt distant from it all.

Like I had stepped out of something I didn't fully realize I was holding onto.

My phone buzzed again.

I didn't move.

Outside the window, campus life carried on—laughter in the distance, footsteps in the hallway, doors opening and closing.

Normal life.

Without me needing to overanalyze it.

For the first time in a long time, I didn't feel pulled toward Ryan's name.

Not sadness.

Not longing.

Just distance.

And that realization sat quietly in my chest.

Not painful.

Just final in a way I wasn't ready to name yet
