Chapter 37 - The Spark That Was Always There

Hey everyone!

Just a quick note for clarity moving forward in the story:

Kairo's magic has been officially changed from Fire Magic to Lightning Magic.

This change was made to better match his personality, fighting style, and overall role in the story. Lightning reflects his speed, sharp reactions, and unpredictable nature much more naturally than fire did.

Theo's POV

The training grounds didn't quiet down after that.

If anything—

They got louder.

Not from noise.

From attention.

Eyes followed me.

Whispers didn't even try to hide anymore.

"…That's him."

"The one from earlier—"

"Water and ice… right?"

I exhaled slowly.

"…Annoying."

Kairo stretched beside me like none of it mattered.

Which, knowing him—

It probably didn't.

"Relax," he said lazily. "You'll get used to it."

"I don't want to get used to it."

"Yeah, no one ever does," he shrugged. "Then they do anyway."

I glanced at him.

"…You sound experienced."

He smirked slightly.

"Maybe I am."

That caught my attention.

"…What does that mean?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He lifted his hand.

Casual.

Loose.

Like he wasn't about to do anything important.

"…You've been showing off all day," he said.

"I think it's my turn."

A faint sound followed.

Crackle.

Small.

Sharp.

But unmistakable.

I froze for half a second.

Because I felt it before I fully saw it.

Mana.

Condensed.

Violent.

Unstable—

No.

Not unstable.

Just fast.

Too fast.

A thin arc of lightning snapped between Kairo's fingers.

Bright.

Clean.

Alive.

"…Lightning?" I muttered.

"Yeah," he said simply. "Took you long enough to notice."

I stared at it.

Not because it was flashy—

But because of how controlled it was.

It didn't spread.

Didn't flicker wildly.

It stayed exactly where he wanted it.

Contained.

"…You've been holding back," I said.

Kairo grinned.

"Obviously."

Before I could respond—

A voice cut in again.

"…So it's true."

We both turned.

Not the same guy from before.

Someone else.

Different presence.

Calmer.

Stronger.

"…Class D keeps getting more interesting," he continued.

Kairo sighed.

"Here we go again."

The guy stepped forward—

Eyes shifting between us.

"…Two of you," he said.

"Let's see if that was luck."

I didn't move.

Didn't respond.

But Kairo—

Stepped forward instead.

"…Nah," he said casually.

"I've been bored anyway."

I glanced at him.

"…Kairo—"

He waved me off.

"I got this."

His tone changed slightly.

Still relaxed—

But sharper.

"Besides," he added, glancing back at me—

"You've had enough spotlight."

That wasn't just a joke.

He meant it.

I paused.

Then stepped back.

"…Fine."

If he wanted this—

I'd watch.

The other student smirked.

"…You sure?"

Kairo stretched his neck slightly.

"Not really," he said. "But let's try anyway."

That attitude—

It irritated the opponent immediately.

Good.

Because the moment the match started—

He attacked.

Fast.

A direct rush—

Mana reinforcing his body.

Close combat type.

Kairo didn't move at first.

Just watched.

Timing.

Reading.

Then—

At the last second—

He moved.

CRACK—

A burst of lightning exploded beneath his feet—

Propelling him sideways.

Not a dodge.

A reposition.

Clean.

Effortless.

"…Oh," I muttered.

That wasn't basic movement.

That was—

Controlled acceleration.

The opponent adjusted quickly—

Turning—

Swinging again.

But Kairo was already moving.

Another burst.

Faster this time.

More precise.

He appeared at the guy's side—

Hand raised.

Lightning gathered—

Not wild—

Focused.

Condensed into a sharp, glowing edge.

"…Too slow," Kairo said lightly.

Then—

Struck.

CRACK—

The hit landed.

Not explosive—

But sharp.

The kind that didn't need force—

Because speed did the work.

The opponent staggered.

Not down—

But shaken.

Kairo stepped back.

Rolling his wrist slightly.

"…You're decent," he said.

Then smirked.

"But not enough."

The guy's expression hardened.

Mana flared again—

Stronger this time.

Desperation.

Aggression.

He charged again—

Faster—

Louder—

Wilder.

Kairo watched him come.

Didn't move immediately.

Didn't rush.

Just waited.

"…There it is," he muttered.

Then—

Moved.

This time—

Not sideways.

Forward.

Straight into the attack.

CRACK—

Lightning surged—

Brighter than before.

Faster.

Cleaner.

For a split second—

He disappeared.

Then—

Reappeared behind the opponent.

Silence.

The guy froze.

His body tensed—

Then—

Collapsed.

Out.

Completely.

The air went still.

No one spoke.

Not immediately.

Because that—

Wasn't just a win.

That was control.

Kairo exhaled.

"…Yeah, okay," he muttered. "That woke me up a bit."

Like it was nothing.

Like that didn't just happen.

I stared at him.

"…You've been hiding that too."

He glanced at me.

Grinning.

"Everyone's hiding something."

That line—

Hit differently.

For a second—

I felt it.

The faint presence again.

[Observation: Dual Core Detected]

[Secondary System Activity: Stable]

I ignored it.

Again.

Because right now—

Something else was clear.

I wasn't the only one changing.

Kairo—

Had always been like this.

He just never showed it.

Until now.

I exhaled slowly.

"…Guess I'm not the only one improving."

Kairo laughed.

"Relax," he said.

"You're still the weird one."

"…Good."

Because if this was the level—

Then I had more work to do.

A lot more.
