Chapter 36 - Eyes That Begin to Notice

Theo's POV

The creature dissolved.

And just like that—

The fight ended.

But the silence didn't.

It never did.

Not here.

Not when people were watching.

"…Did you see that?"

"That wasn't normal…"

"Was that Class D?"

The whispers came fast.

Not quiet.

Not subtle.

They weren't even trying to hide it anymore.

I exhaled slowly.

"…Great."

Kairo stepped up beside me, staring at the spot where the creature had been.

"…Okay," he said.

"…What."

I glanced at him.

"…What?"

He turned fully toward me, eyes narrowing—but there it was again.

That spark.

"You froze it on impact," he said. "Since when do you do that?"

"…Since recently."

"Ah," he nodded seriously. "Amazing explanation. Truly life-changing."

I almost smiled.

Almost.

"…I've been working on it."

"Working on it?" he repeated. "Theo, you cut through it like it owed you money."

"…It wasn't that thick."

Kairo stared at me for a second.

Then laughed.

Actually laughed.

"Right," he said. "Next time I'll bring you something thicker so we can test that."

That felt normal.

For a moment—

The tension faded.

Then the whispers grew louder again.

"They're talking about you," Kairo added casually.

"I noticed."

"You like that kind of attention?"

"…No."

"Good," he smirked. "Because you just signed up for a lot more of it."

I didn't respond.

Because he wasn't wrong.

The ice.

The pressure.

The control.

That wasn't something you could hide anymore.

"…You changed something," Kairo said, quieter this time.

"…Yeah."

That was the simplest answer.

Because anything else—

Would be a lie.

Or incomplete.

Before I could say more—

"You."

We both turned.

Another student.

Not Class D.

Higher-ranked.

Confident.

Annoyed.

"I want a match," he said.

Kairo leaned slightly toward me.

"…Here we go," he muttered, clearly enjoying this.

I sighed.

"…No."

The guy blinked.

"…No?"

Kairo let out a short laugh.

"Wow," he said. "That's rough."

I ignored him.

"I already fought."

"That wasn't a match," the guy snapped.

"That was you showing off."

That made me pause.

Something in me shifted slightly.

"…If I wanted to show off," I said quietly—

"I wouldn't have stopped there."

Silence.

Even Kairo stopped talking.

"…Oh," he muttered. "That had some edge."

The guy's mana flared.

Stronger now.

Unstable.

"You think you're better than me?"

I met his eyes.

Calm.

But not passive.

"I think you picked the wrong time."

That was enough.

He stepped forward—

Mana rising—

Tension tightening—

"Enough."

The word cut through everything.

Clean.

Absolute.

The air shifted.

Pressure dropped.

No—

It didn't drop.

It froze.

Everyone stopped.

Even the guy in front of me.

Kairo straightened slightly.

"…Yeah," he muttered. "That's not good."

I turned.

And saw her.

Standing at the edge of the training ground.

Calm.

Still.

Watching.

Her eyes weren't on the others.

They were on me.

"…This isn't the place," she said.

No anger.

No force.

But it wasn't a suggestion.

The guy hesitated.

"…Tch."

He stepped back.

But not before throwing one last glare at me.

"This isn't over."

Kairo waved slightly.

"Yeah, yeah. Come back stronger next time."

"…Shut up."

He left.

Kairo grinned.

"I like him. He's predictable."

"…You enjoy this too much."

"Absolutely."

Then—

His tone shifted.

Just slightly.

"…But seriously," he added—

"You've changed."

I didn't answer immediately.

Because I knew that.

I felt it.

"…I'm getting stronger," I said.

Kairo shook his head.

"No."

"You're becoming something else."

That—

Hit differently.

Before I could respond—

She spoke again.

"…You've improved."

I looked at her.

Up close—

Her presence felt heavier than before.

Not overwhelming.

But precise.

Focused.

"…I'm trying," I said.

Her gaze didn't shift.

"…Not just trying," she said.

"Changing."

That word again.

Change.

Water.

Adaptation.

It all connected.

But—

Something else was there too.

Something deeper.

Something I wasn't fully touching yet.

"…Maybe," I replied.

She held my gaze for a moment longer.

Like she was measuring something.

Then—

Turned.

And walked away.

Just like that.

Kairo let out a quiet breath.

"…Yeah," he said.

"She's definitely trouble."

I didn't disagree.

But my attention shifted.

Not to the crowd.

Not to the instructors watching above.

But inward.

To the feeling still lingering.

The water I controlled—

It felt sharper.

More responsive.

More… willing to change.

I flexed my fingers slightly.

Feeling the mana settle.

Still stable.

Still under control.

But not perfect.

Not yet.

"…There's still gaps," I murmured.

Kairo shrugged.

"There's always gaps."

"…Yeah."

But now—

People were watching.

And when people watched—

They tested.

I looked at my hand.

Then clenched it slowly.

Because one thing was clear now.

I couldn't stay the same.

Not anymore.

Not after this.

Not when something inside me was already—

Starting to change.
