The school day felt longer than usual.
Not because of the classes.
Not because of the workload.
But because Seo-yoon couldn't stop noticing things she hadn't paid attention to before.
Small things.
The way people talked.
The way they laughed.
The way they looked at each other.
It was easier to notice now.
Maybe because she was trying not to notice something else.
At lunch, she sat with Hyun-woo again.
It wasn't planned.
It just happened.
He had asked, she had nodded, and now she was sitting across from him, her tray untouched in front of her.
"You really don't eat much," he said.
"I do," she replied.
"You say that every time."
Seo-yoon looked down at her food. "I'm just not hungry."
Hyun-woo didn't push.
He just leaned back slightly, watching her for a moment before speaking again.
"You think a lot," he said.
She glanced at him. "Is that a problem?"
"No," he said. "Just an observation."
Seo-yoon nodded faintly.
There was a pause.
Not uncomfortable.
Just different.
"You're quiet," he added.
"I always am."
"Not like this."
Seo-yoon didn't respond.
She picked up her fork, moved her food around slightly, then put it down again.
Hyun-woo followed the movement, then looked at her.
"You don't have to answer," he said. "But is something bothering you?"
Seo-yoon hesitated.
There was an answer.
But it wasn't something she could say out loud.
Not easily.
"No," she said finally.
Hyun-woo didn't look convinced.
But he didn't question it.
"Alright," he said.
He started talking again after that, about something that had happened in class earlier, something light, something easy to listen to.
Seo-yoon nodded occasionally, her attention half there.
Then, without meaning to
She laughed.
It wasn't forced.
It wasn't small.
It just came out.
Clear.
Soft.
Real.
For a second, everything felt normal.
Hyun-woo smiled. "There it is."
Seo-yoon blinked. "What?"
"That," he said. "You don't do that often."
She looked away slightly. "It wasn't that funny."
"It was enough."
Seo-yoon didn't respond.
But the faintest hint of that smile stayed.
Across the cafeteria, someone noticed.
Ji-hoon stood near the entrance, his tray in his hand, his gaze fixed in one direction.
On her.
On the way she smiled.
On the way she looked
Different.
He didn't move right away.
Min-chae stood beside him, following his line of sight.
She didn't say anything at first.
Then, quietly
"You see it too, right?"
Ji-hoon didn't answer.
Min-chae sighed softly. "You're just going to stand here?"
"I'm going to eat," he said.
"Somewhere else?"
"Yes."
Min-chae looked at him for a moment, then nodded slowly. "Fine."
They walked to another table.
Not close.
Not far.
Just enough to be separate.
Ji-hoon sat down, placing his tray in front of him.
He didn't look again.
Not immediately.
He told himself it didn't matter.
That it shouldn't.
That it was normal.
Seo-yoon could sit with whoever she wanted.
Talk to whoever she wanted.
Laugh however she wanted.
None of it had anything to do with him.
That's what he told himself.
He picked up his fork.
Took a bite.
Didn't taste it.
Across the room, Seo-yoon's smile faded slowly.
Not because anything changed.
Not because Hyun-woo stopped talking.
But because something felt off again.
She didn't know why.
She just did.
Her gaze drifted.
Unconsciously.
Searching.
And then she found him.
Ji-hoon.
Sitting at another table.
Not with her.
Not even near her.
Just there.
For a moment, she watched him.
The way he looked down at his food.
The way he didn't look up.
The way he seemed
Closed off.
Seo-yoon looked away quickly.
Her chest tightened slightly.
Hyun-woo noticed.
"You keep doing that," he said.
"Doing what?"
"Looking around like you're trying to find something."
Seo-yoon shook her head. "I'm not."
"Then what are you doing?"
She didn't answer.
Because she didn't know.
Or maybe she did
And didn't want to say it.
After lunch, the day continued.
Classes passed.
Time moved.
Nothing dramatic happened.
And yet
Everything felt different.
When the final bell rang, Seo-yoon packed her bag slowly again.
She didn't expect anything.
Not anymore.
"Walking out?" Hyun-woo asked.
"Yes."
"I'll come with you."
She nodded.
They left together.
The hallway was crowded, voices overlapping, movement constant.
Seo-yoon walked beside him, listening as he talked about something she wasn't fully paying attention to.
Because again
She felt it.
That awareness.
That quiet pull.
She glanced back.
Ji-hoon was there.
Not close.
Not far.
Just behind.
Walking alone.
Not trying to catch up.
Not trying to fall behind.
Just there.
For a moment, their eyes met.
This time, neither of them looked away immediately.
It lasted a second longer.
Maybe two.
Then someone passed between them.
And the moment broke.
Seo-yoon turned forward again.
Hyun-woo kept talking.
The crowd moved around them.
Everything continued.
But something stayed.
Something quiet.
Something heavy.
Because for the first time
She realized
The way she smiled with someone else
Was something he had noticed too.
