By the end of the week, the distance between them had settled into something real.
Not obvious enough for others to question every moment.
But clear enough that it could no longer be ignored.
Seo-yoon felt it in everything.
In the way mornings no longer belonged to both of them.
In the way their conversations had become shorter, simpler, almost careful.
In the way silence now felt like something they were avoiding, not sharing.
That morning, she didn't go to the corner.
She didn't check if he was there.
She walked straight to school.
Inside the classroom, Hyun-woo was already in her seat.
Or rather, in Ji-hoon's seat.
She paused for a second when she saw him.
Then walked forward anyway.
"You're early again," he said.
"So are you."
He smiled. "Can I stay here?"
Seo-yoon hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then she nodded. "It's fine."
It wasn't.
But she said it anyway.
Hyun-woo settled comfortably beside her, placing his bag down like he had done it many times before.
Maybe he had.
The routine was changing faster than she had expected.
A few minutes later, Ji-hoon entered the classroom.
Seo-yoon didn't look at him immediately.
But she felt it.
The shift.
The quiet awareness that always came with his presence.
When she finally glanced up, he was already looking.
Not at her.
At the seat.
His seat.
Occupied.
Hyun-woo noticed too.
"Should I move?" he asked quietly.
Seo-yoon's fingers tightened slightly around her pen.
Before she could answer, Ji-hoon spoke.
"It's fine."
His voice was calm.
Neutral.
Like it didn't matter.
He walked past them without stopping and took his place at the back again.
Seo-yoon watched him for a second longer than she meant to.
Then looked away.
Class began.
The teacher's voice filled the room, steady and familiar, but Seo-yoon found it harder than ever to focus.
Everything felt slightly off.
Like she was sitting in the wrong place.
Like something wasn't where it was supposed to be.
Beside her, Hyun-woo leaned closer to explain something again, his tone easy, his presence constant.
She nodded.
Listened.
Responded.
But part of her attention stayed somewhere else.
Behind her.
At some point, she turned slightly.
Not enough to be obvious.
Just enough to see.
Ji-hoon was writing.
Focused.
Unbothered.
Or pretending to be.
She couldn't tell.
She looked forward again.
Her chest felt tight.
Lunch was the same.
Hyun-woo sat with her.
Min-chae joined for a few minutes, then left, her expression thoughtful, like she was choosing not to say something.
Ji-hoon didn't come.
He sat somewhere else again.
Seo-yoon stopped looking for him after a while.
Or at least, she tried to.
After school, things didn't change either.
"Are you going straight home?" Hyun-woo asked.
"Yes."
"I'll walk with you."
She nodded.
It had become normal.
Too normal.
They walked side by side, their conversation light, easy to follow, easy to respond to.
It should have felt comfortable.
And in some ways, it did.
But not in the way she was used to.
Not in the way she didn't have to think about.
As they reached the school gates, Seo-yoon slowed slightly.
Just for a second.
A habit.
One she hadn't let go of yet.
She didn't turn around.
She didn't need to.
She already knew.
Ji-hoon was there.
Somewhere behind.
Or maybe not.
She couldn't tell anymore.
"Is something wrong?" Hyun-woo asked.
"No," she said.
"You keep slowing down."
"I'm just tired."
He nodded. "We can walk slower."
"That's okay."
They kept going.
Step by step.
Forward.
Without stopping.
Without waiting.
Seo-yoon didn't look back.
Not this time.
She told herself it was better that way.
Easier.
Cleaner.
But as the distance between the school and the road behind her grew
She felt it more clearly than ever.
The space between her and Ji-hoon
Was no longer just something she noticed.
It had become something she was living in.
And the longer it stayed
The harder it felt
To close it again...
