Chapter 23 - The Truth Was Recorded

No one moved.

All eyes were on the flash drive.

Small.

Simple.

But somehow…

Heavier than everything we had been carrying.

"What's in it?" I asked.

My voice came out low.

Tense.

He looked at me.

"You really want to know?" he said.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

Because at this point…

There was no going back.

No more hiding.

No more pretending.

"Fine," he said.

He turned.

Started walking.

"Where are you going?" Noah asked.

"Somewhere private."

Of course.

Because whatever was inside that…

Wasn't meant for everyone.

We followed.

All of us.

Even Ryan.

Even Emily.

Because now…

We were trapped in this together.

No way out.

No escape.

The empty classroom felt colder than it should.

Silent.

Closed.

Safe.

Or at least…

It should have been.

He walked to the teacher's desk.

Plugged the flash drive into the computer.

The screen flickered.

And for a moment…

No one breathed.

"Last chance," he said.

"Once you see this… there's no turning back."

No one spoke.

Because we already knew that.

"Play it," I said.

A pause.

Then—

Click.

The video started.

Black screen.

Static.

And then—

A room.

Not outside.

Not the road.

Inside.

My chest tightened.

"Wait…" Emily whispered.

I leaned closer.

Because something about that room…

Felt familiar.

Too familiar.

"Where is that?" Noah asked.

Silence.

Then—

I realized.

My stomach dropped.

"My house."

Everything froze.

The video continued.

The camera was hidden.

Watching.

Recording.

And then—

Me.

Walking into the room.

My heart started racing.

"No…"

I watched myself.

Pacing.

Angry.

Frustrated.

"This doesn't make sense…" I muttered.

And then—

The door opened.

He walked in.

Him.

Alive.

Before everything.

Before that night.

"What is this?" Emily whispered.

"It's the beginning," he said quietly.

On the screen—

I turned to him.

"You shouldn't have come," I said.

My voice.

Clear.

Real.

"I didn't have a choice," he replied.

Silence in the room.

Because now…

We were watching the truth.

Not memories.

Not guesses.

Reality.

"What do you want?" I asked in the video.

He hesitated.

Then—

"The same thing you do."

That didn't make sense.

"What does that mean?" Noah whispered.

The video continued.

"You know about them," he said.

My chest tightened.

"About who?" Emily asked.

No one answered.

Because we were too focused.

Too deep in it.

"You think I don't know?" I said in the video.

"I saw them."

Emily covered her mouth.

Ryan didn't move.

"I told you not to get involved," he replied.

"And I told you I wouldn't stay quiet," I shot back.

Silence.

Tension.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

"Then what are you going to do?" he asked.

A pause.

And then—

I said it.

The thing that changed everything.

"I'm going to expose all of it."

Silence.

"What?" Noah whispered.

My hands started shaking.

"No…"

The video didn't stop.

"You really think that's a good idea?" he asked.

"I don't care anymore," I replied.

"They deserve it."

"They?" Emily said.

Confused.

Lost.

The video continued.

"You don't understand what you're getting into," he warned.

"Then tell me," I said.

A pause.

Long.

Heavy.

And then—

"You're already in it."

The screen glitched slightly.

Static.

Then—

The video cut.

Silence.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Because now…

Everything was different.

"You were going to expose something…" Noah said slowly.

I couldn't breathe.

"I don't remember that…"

"Of course you don't," he said.

I looked at him.

"What was I talking about?" I asked.

Silence.

Then—

He smiled.

And said:

"You still think this is about us."

A chill ran down my spine.

"It's not."

My heart started racing again.

"Then what is it about?"

A pause.

Long enough to hurt.

And then—

"Your families."

Everything stopped.

"What?" Emily whispered.

"You think all of this…" he continued

"…was just teenagers making mistakes?"

Silence.

Cold.

Dangerous.

"No…" I muttered.

"That video?" he pointed at the screen

"it's just the surface."

My chest tightened.

"There's more," he said.

Of course there was.

There was always more.

"And now…" he added quietly

"…you're all part of it."

The room felt smaller.

Like the walls were closing in.

Because suddenly…

This wasn't just about the past.

This wasn't just about guilt.

This was something bigger.

Something planned long before us.

Something we didn't even understand yet.

And somehow…

We were right in the middle of it.

🖤 Poem — Unknown

we thought we were broken

lost in our lies

just kids in the dark

beneath heavy skies

but truth runs deeper

than what we could see

because the past we were chasing…

was never just "we"
