Chapter 22 - Before That Night

The noise around me faded.

Voices.

Footsteps.

The entire cafeteria.

Gone.

All I could hear…

Was my own heartbeat.

Loud.

Unstable.

"You're the reason it happened."

Those words didn't leave my head.

They repeated.

Over and over.

"No…" I whispered.

But it didn't feel like a lie.

It felt like something worse.

Something I didn't want to see.

"You remember now?" he asked.

I looked at him.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

A small smile.

"You do."

My chest tightened.

"No, I don't."

"Then why aren't you denying it?" he replied.

Silence.

Because I couldn't.

Not completely.

Something was there.

Something broken.

"Lucas…" Emily said softly.

I didn't look at her.

I couldn't.

Because now…

It wasn't just about what I did.

It was about who I was.

"Tell me," I said.

"What did I do?"

A pause.

Long.

Heavy.

And then—

"You told me to come."

Everything stopped.

"No…"

"Yes."

My head started spinning.

"That's not true."

"You sent the first message," he said.

Silence.

Cold.

"What?" Noah whispered.

"You called me there," he continued.

"Before Emily ever did."

My breath caught.

"That's a lie."

"Is it?" he asked.

I stepped back.

"No… I would remember that."

"Would you?" he replied calmly.

And that question…

That question destroyed me.

Because the truth was—

I didn't remember.

Not clearly.

Not fully.

"Why would I do that?" I asked.

He looked at me.

And this time…

There was no anger.

Just something deeper.

"You wanted to talk."

"That's not enough."

"No," he agreed.

"It wasn't."

Silence.

"Then why?" I asked again.

He took a slow breath.

"Because you found out."

My heart skipped.

"Found out what?"

He held my gaze.

"About Emily."

Everything froze.

Emily went pale.

"No…" she whispered.

My chest tightened.

"What about Emily?"

He didn't look at her.

He kept looking at me.

"You saw her with Ryan."

The world stopped.

No.

No, that—

That couldn't be right.

"That's not—"

"It is," he said.

Emily stepped back.

"Lucas, I—"

"Don't," I said.

My voice came out colder than I expected.

"Just… don't."

Silence.

Because now…

Pieces were moving.

Fast.

Too fast.

"You found out before that night," he continued.

"You were angry."

Flash.

A hallway.

Voices.

Emily laughing.

Ryan close.

Too close.

My head hurt.

"Stop…" I muttered.

"You called me," he said.

"You said you needed to talk."

Another flash.

Rain starting.

A message sent.

Hands shaking.

"I didn't—"

"You did."

I grabbed my head.

Because now…

I could feel it.

Not clearly.

But enough.

"I just wanted answers…" I whispered.

"Yes," he said.

"And you knew he had the video," I added.

"Yes."

"So I thought…" I swallowed

"…maybe he'd tell me everything."

Silence.

"That's why I came," he said.

My chest tightened.

"But I wasn't the only one."

Of course not.

Because nothing was simple.

Nothing ever was.

"Someone else knew you called me," he continued.

My eyes slowly lifted.

Ryan.

Of course.

"You told him," I said.

Emily looked down.

"…yes."

There it was.

The chain.

Me.

Emily.

Ryan.

All connected.

All responsible.

"All of this…" Noah whispered

"…started before that night."

"Yes," he said.

"And none of you realized it."

Silence.

Because now…

We weren't just victims.

We weren't just guilty.

We were part of something bigger.

Something planned.

Something manipulated.

"You used us," I said.

He shook his head.

"No."

"Then what is this?" I snapped.

He stepped closer.

"I didn't create this."

Silence.

"You did."

My chest tightened.

"All of you."

The words hit hard.

Because deep down…

We knew.

This didn't start with one decision.

It started with many.

Small ones.

Lies.

Secrets.

Betrayals.

Until…

It became something unstoppable.

"And now?" I asked.

Silence.

"What happens now?"

He looked at all of us.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And then—

"Now we finish it."

A chill ran down my spine.

"What does that mean?"

His expression darkened.

"It means…"

A pause.

"…no more lies."

And then—

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out something small.

Metal.

Cold.

My heart stopped.

A flash drive.

"The video wasn't the only thing I kept," he said.

Silence.

Because that…

That changed everything again.

"What's in that?" Noah asked.

He smiled.

"You'll see."

My chest tightened.

Because whatever was inside that…

Was worse.

Much worse.

🖤 Poem — Lucas

I thought the night

was where it began

a broken moment

a shattered plan

but truth was written

before the fall

and I was the first…

to start it all
