Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: Bonds Strenghten

The morning sunlight spilled across Seoul Station, bouncing off polished floors and glass walls. Kim So Hee adjusted a stack of files at her desk, scanning the room with her usual calm precision. Officers moved quickly, phones buzzed constantly, and the faint smell of coffee drifted from the break area.

Her gaze caught Ahn Soo Bin arriving, early as always, clutching her notebook like it was a lifeline. The girl's energy was palpable. Bright. Unrestrained. A little impulsive—but strangely refreshing. So Hee allowed herself a small, quiet smile.

"Intern," So Hee called, voice calm but firm. "We have a small missing-person case today. You'll check nearby streets and shops. I'll coordinate with CCTV and the patrol units."

"Yes, ma'am!" Soo Bin's cheerful voice rang out. So Hee noted the enthusiasm, the ease with which she jumped into action. She would need to keep a close eye, but the girl was learning quickly, and that made her promising.

Outside, Soo Bin bounded ahead, chatting with every shopkeeper and passerby. Her extroverted energy drew smiles and cooperation almost instantly. So Hee followed quietly, noting small details: the way Soo Bin's eyes lit up when someone responded, her genuine politeness, even her occasional over-enthusiasm.

So Hee suppressed a small laugh as Soo Bin nearly tripped over a curb but recovered with a dramatic flourish.

"Careful," she said calmly, though her lips twitched.

"Don't worry, ma'am! I've got this," Soo Bin replied, grinning brightly.

So Hee shook her head slightly, a small warmth spreading through her chest. Moments like these reminded her that there was a reason she enjoyed working with certain people.

They arrived at the park where the elderly woman was sitting on a bench, looking confused. Children ran and played nearby, shouting and laughing. So Hee knelt beside the woman, her voice soft, measured.

"You're safe now," she said. "Let's get you home."

Soo Bin stepped forward immediately, holding the woman's hand. So Hee observed quietly as the girl guided the woman safely. Despite the minor chaos, Soo Bin handled it with an unexpected thoughtfulness, not just energy.

The woman's family soon arrived, relieved. So Hee allowed herself a small, quiet laugh at the woman's delight—and at Soo Bin's triumphant grin. This was why she loved the work: small moments, small victories, and the people around her who made the day lighter.

Back at the station, So Hee filed the report with precise efficiency, but her gaze occasionally flicked to Soo Bin reviewing her notes. The girl's energy and eagerness were contagious, and So Hee felt a subtle warmth she rarely allowed herself in the office.

Shin Jae walked past, smiling faintly. "Another successful mission, Lieutenant?"

So Hee allowed herself a small teasing smile. "Yes, thanks to teamwork," she said lightly. Inside, she noted how smoothly Soo Bin had adapted—how much potential she had.

By the time she closed the report, So Hee realized she was beginning to look forward to these little partnerships, to moments where work and camaraderie overlapped, and sometimes, even where laughter became genuine.
