Chapter 5: The Price of Power

Emily didn't wait until she got home.

The moment school ended, she slipped into an empty restroom, locking the door behind her.

Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror.

Perfect.

Calm.

In control.

But inside—

she wasn't.

"System," she said quietly. "Explain what you meant."

Silence.

Her jaw tightened.

"You said he's a threat. You said there's an unknown variable. And now you're glitching."

Her voice dropped slightly.

"What are you hiding from me?"

For a moment…

nothing happened.

Then—

…User request acknowledged.

The air in the room felt colder.

A faint pressure returned to her head, stronger than before.

Dark Queen System has conditions.

Emily's heart began to beat faster.

"Conditions?" she repeated.

Every use of influence… requires a cost.

Her breath slowed.

"Cost how?"

There was a pause.

Long.

Heavy.

Then—

Emotional extraction.

Emily froze.

"…What?"

The system feeds on emotional energy.

A strange chill ran down her spine.

"No… explain that properly."

Each activation strengthens your control…

…but weakens your ability to feel.

The words hit harder than she expected.

"Weakens… my emotions?"

Correct.

Emily stared at herself in the mirror.

"That's not possible. I feel fine."

For now.

Her reflection seemed… different.

Colder.

Sharper.

Almost like someone else was looking back at her.

---

"What happens if I keep using it?" she asked slowly.

Silence.

Then—

You will gain absolute control…

A pause.

…and lose everything that makes you human.

---

Emily's breath caught.

"No."

Her voice came out firmer this time.

"No, that's not happening."

All power requires sacrifice.

"I didn't agree to that!"

You already did.

The room felt suffocating.

Her thoughts raced.

"This is insane… I can just stop using it."

Another pause.

Then—

Attempt restriction.

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Suddenly—

A sharp pain shot through her head.

She gasped, grabbing the sink for support.

"What—?!"

System dependency detected.

Her breathing became uneven.

The more you use the system…

…the harder it becomes to live without it.

---

Emily squeezed her eyes shut, trying to steady herself.

"No… no, I'm in control," she whispered.

But even as she said it—

she wasn't sure it was true anymore.

---

Then—

something unexpected happened.

The pain stopped.

Completely.

Like it had never been there.

Emily blinked, confused.

"What just—"

External interference detected.

Her eyes widened.

"…Daniel."

---

The door behind her creaked open slightly.

Emily turned sharply.

Daniel stood there.

Calm as ever.

Watching her.

---

"You don't look so perfect right now," he said quietly.

Emily's heart pounded.

"How long were you standing there?"

"Long enough."

His eyes moved slightly, studying her face.

"You're not okay."

It wasn't a question.

---

Emily straightened quickly, forcing her usual composure back.

"I'm fine."

Daniel didn't respond.

He stepped closer.

And with each step—

Emily felt it.

The system…

going silent.

---

System offline.

---

Her breath caught.

Offline?

That had never happened before.

---

"What are you?" she whispered before she could stop herself.

Daniel paused in front of her.

For a moment, he just looked at her.

Then—

he said something that made her entire world shift.

---

"I think I should be asking you the same thing."

---

Silence filled the space between them.

Heavy.

Uncertain.

Dangerous.

---

For the first time—

Emily didn't have the advantage.

No system.

No control.

No mask.

---

Just her.

And somehow…

that scared her more than anything.
