Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: what you can't Take back

The moment the words left my mouth, everything changed.

Not loudly. Not visibly.

But it changed.

"…And I already made my choice."

Silence followed, heavy and complete. It pressed in from all sides, settling between us like something permanent.

Kairo didn't move. Didn't speak. His gaze stayed on me, steady, unreadable—but there was something deeper there now. Something quieter.

Something certain.

The original omega was the first to react.

"…I see," he said softly.

His voice was calm, but it wasn't the same calm as before. It lacked that quiet control he always carried so effortlessly. There was something else beneath it now.

Something real.

My chest tightened.

I hadn't expected it to feel like this.

Like I had taken something from him.

"I didn't mean—"

"You did," he interrupted gently.

The words stopped me.

He wasn't angry.

That made it worse.

"You just didn't say it until now."

Silence settled again.

Because he was right.

Again.

"I thought you understood," he continued. "That not choosing… was still a choice."

I swallowed. "I know."

"And now you've stopped avoiding it."

His gaze held mine.

"…So this is the result."

The weight of it settled in my chest.

There was no going back from this.

Not really.

Not anymore.

Kairo finally moved.

One step forward.

Then another.

Until he was standing beside me again.

Close.

Familiar.

Certain.

"You said it," he said quietly.

I didn't look at him.

"I know."

"And you meant it."

That wasn't a question.

I hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—"…Yes."

The word felt heavier than anything else I'd said before.

More final.

More real.

Kairo's hand brushed lightly against mine, then settled there without force.

Not claiming.

Not pulling.

Just… there.

But it felt like everything.

The original omega watched.

Of course he did.

There was no way to hide any of this.

Not anymore.

"Then I won't stand in your way," he said.

My chest tightened sharply.

"That's not what I—"

"It is," he said calmly.

I looked at him.

Really looked.

And for the first time—

He looked tired.

Not physically.

But emotionally.

Like something he had been holding onto for a long time… had finally slipped out of his hands.

"You don't have to do that," I said.

"I do."

A pause.

"Because anything else would be pointless."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

I didn't know what to say.

There was nothing that would fix this.

Nothing that would make it easier.

Because this wasn't something that could be softened.

It was a choice.

And choices always had consequences.

"I told you I wouldn't step aside," he continued.

"You didn't," I said quietly.

"I didn't," he agreed.

Another pause.

"Until now."

That word settled deeper than anything else.

Now.

Because of me.

Because of what I said.

Because of what I chose.

My chest tightened again.

This time—it didn't ease.

"You're not losing," I said.

The words felt weak the moment they left my mouth.

He smiled faintly.

But it didn't reach his eyes.

"That's not how this works."

Silence.

Because I knew that too.

"You made your choice," he said.

"And I'm making mine."

Another step back.

More distance.

Real distance.

"I won't interfere anymore."

The words echoed what he said before.

But now—

They meant something different.

Before, it sounded like strategy.

Now…

It sounded like an ending.

"You're just going to walk away?" I asked.

I didn't mean for it to sound like that.

Like I didn't want him to.

But it did.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

"That's what you wanted, isn't it?"

I opened my mouth—

Then stopped.

Because I didn't know.

And that… was the problem.

"I didn't think it would feel like this," I admitted.

A faint pause.

Then—

"It never does."

His voice was softer now.

Not distant.

Not sharp.

Just honest.

"For what it's worth," he added, "I don't regret it."

My chest tightened.

"Regret what?"

"Trying."

The word lingered.

Simple.

But heavy.

Then he turned.

No hesitation.

No pause this time.

And walked away.

For real.

The sound of his footsteps faded slowly down the corridor until there was nothing left.

No presence.

No tension.

No second voice.

Just silence.

Complete.

Final.

I stood there, unmoving, staring at the space he left behind.

And for the first time since all of this started—

Something felt… empty.

Not confusing.

Not overwhelming.

Just empty.

"You're thinking about him."

Kairo's voice broke the silence.

I didn't look at him.

"…Yes."

There was no point denying it.

Not now.

Not after everything.

"That doesn't change anything," he said.

I exhaled slowly.

"I know."

Silence followed.

Then—

"You chose," he added.

I nodded slightly.

"I did."

"And you're still here."

"Yes."

Another pause.

Then—

Kairo's hand tightened slightly around mine.

Not enough to hurt.

Just enough to remind me.

Ground me.

"You won't leave," he said.

Not a question.

Not a command.

Just certainty.

I swallowed.

"…No."

The word came easier this time.

Still heavy.

Still real.

But without hesitation.

Kairo didn't say anything after that.

He didn't need to.

Because everything that needed to be said… already had been.

The choice was made.

The line was crossed.

And whatever came next—

There was no going back anymore.
