It stopped feeling temporary.
That was the problem.
At some point, without me noticing exactly when, this place stopped feeling like somewhere I was just passing through. The mansion, the routines, even the silence—it all started to feel… familiar.
And that wasn't supposed to happen.
"You're staring again."
I didn't look away from the window. "You're always watching."
"Yes."
"Do you ever get tired of that?"
"No."
I let out a quiet breath. "Figures."
Silence followed, but it wasn't uncomfortable anymore. That was the part I couldn't ignore. Before, every quiet moment felt tense, like something was about to happen. Now… it just felt normal.
Too normal.
"You've adjusted," Kairo said.
"I wouldn't go that far."
"You would have argued before."
"I still can."
"But you're not."
I frowned slightly, turning to face him. "Maybe I'm just choosing my arguments better."
"Or you don't have as many left."
That hit closer than I expected.
"I still have questions," I said.
"Ask them."
I hesitated.
Because the questions I had now… weren't as simple as before.
"This," I started slowly, "what exactly is it now?"
Kairo didn't answer immediately. His gaze stayed on me, steady, like he was measuring something again.
"You already know," he said.
"No," I replied. "I know what it looks like. That's not the same thing."
"It is."
"It's not," I insisted. "Before, I could say this was temporary. That I was just… filling a role."
Silence.
"I can't say that anymore."
The words felt heavier than expected.
Because they were true.
Kairo stepped closer, closing the distance like he always did.
"Then stop saying it," he said.
"That's not the point."
"It is."
"No," I said, my voice tightening slightly. "The point is, if this isn't temporary… then what is it?"
A pause.
Then—
"It's real."
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
My chest tightened.
"That's not enough."
"It is."
"No, it's not," I said. "Real doesn't explain anything."
"It explains everything."
I let out a frustrated breath. "You really don't do explanations, do you?"
"I don't need to."
"I do."
Silence stretched between us.
"You're still trying to define it," he said.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I need to understand what I'm part of," I replied. "I need to know what I'm staying in."
Kairo studied me for a moment.
Then—
"You're staying with me."
My breath caught slightly.
"That's not what I meant."
"It is."
I shook my head. "You keep reducing everything to that."
"Because everything comes back to that."
"That's not how things work," I said.
"It is here."
That again.
Always that.
"This place really is messed up," I muttered.
"You noticed."
"I noticed a while ago."
Silence followed again, but this time it felt heavier.
Because the more we talked—
The clearer it became.
I wasn't just here anymore.
I was part of this.
"You're not leaving," Kairo said.
I didn't react immediately.
Because hearing it now felt different.
Less like pressure.
More like a fact I had already accepted.
"…No," I said quietly.
The word didn't shake.
It didn't hesitate.
It just settled.
Kairo didn't respond right away.
But I saw it—
That subtle shift in his expression.
Something softer.
Not weak.
Just… less distant.
"You're starting to accept it," he said.
"I think I have to."
"You don't have to."
"I do," I replied. "Because pretending I'm still on the outside of this doesn't work anymore."
"You're not on the outside."
"I know."
That was the problem.
Silence settled again.
But it wasn't tense.
It felt… close.
"You're different from before," I said.
"How?"
"You're not as cold."
A pause.
Then—
"I am."
"No," I said. "Not like before."
"That's your perception."
"Maybe," I admitted. "But it still feels different."
Kairo didn't respond immediately.
And for once—
He didn't deny it either.
That alone said enough.
"You're changing too," he said.
"I know."
"You don't like it."
"I don't understand it."
"That's not the same thing."
"It feels the same," I muttered.
Silence again.
But this time—
It felt lighter.
Less like conflict.
More like something… settling.
"I keep thinking about before," I said.
"Before what?"
"Before all this felt real."
A pause.
"And?"
"It was easier," I admitted. "When I could tell myself none of this mattered."
"And now?"
I exhaled slowly.
"…Now it does."
The words stayed between us.
Clear.
Unavoidable.
Kairo stepped closer again, stopping just in front of me.
"You finally said it," he said quietly.
I didn't look away.
"…Yeah."
Because there was no point anymore.
No reason to pretend.
No way to go back to how things were.
"You understand now," he continued.
"Enough."
"That's enough."
Silence followed, but it wasn't heavy.
It felt… certain.
Like something had finally settled into place.
"You're not going anywhere," he said.
Not a question.
Not a command.
Just certainty.
And for the first time—
It didn't feel like something I needed to argue with.
"…No," I said.
And this time—
It didn't feel like a decision.
It felt like the truth.
