Part 1 — Impact
The drop ended harder than expected.
June Kade hit the ground shoulder-first, rolling across fractured mineral dust before catching himself against a jagged crystal ridge. His armor absorbed most of the impact, but the vibration still rattled through his ribs.
He lay there for a second, staring at the sky.
It wasn't blue.
It wasn't anything he recognized.
The sky above stretched in muted violet layers, thin clouds drifting slowly across a pale, distant sun that looked dimmer than it should have. The light cast long shadows across the terrain, turning the crystal formations into jagged silhouettes.
June exhaled slowly.
"…Okay."
Then he suddenly froze.
"…Okay—wait."
He quickly lifted his hands, wiggling his fingers.
"Hands. Good."
He rolled his shoulders, testing movement.
"Arms. Good."
He lifted one leg. Then the other.
"Legs… still attached."
June reached up, touching his helmet, then the sides of his armor.
"Head… still here."
Then he paused.
"...Hold on."
June quickly grabbed the waistband of his pants and pulled them outward, glancing down for a quick check.
A second passed.
Then he let out a relieved sigh.
"...Yep. Still there."
He shook his head slightly.
"Because if that was gone… I'd never get a girlfriend."
He winced, already imagining it.
"I can see it now," June muttered.
"Eunuch June, nice to meet you."
He snorted quietly to himself.
"Yeah… real popular with the ladies."
June brushed the dust from his hands, shaking them once.
"Man drops me from orbit and almost costs me my entire future? Yeah… David would've never heard the end of that."
He pushed himself upright, brushing dust from his armor. His boots crunched softly against hardened crystal fragments scattered across the ground.
The air felt dry.
Not desert dry.
Cold dry.
Like the atmosphere had less weight to it.
June tapped his comm.
"Gamma, report."
Static answered him.
He tried again.
"Lucian? David? Anyone?"
Nothing.
June lowered his wrist.
"Yeah… that tracks."
He scanned the terrain.
The ground stretched unevenly in all directions. Tall crystal spires rose like broken glass from the surface, while patches of dark vegetation formed dense clusters between ridges. Some of the plants moved slightly, thin leaves shifting despite the lack of wind.
June narrowed his eyes.
"…That's comforting."
He took a few careful steps forward, adjusting his footing as the ground shifted subtly beneath his weight.
Not unstable.
Responsive.
That was worse.
A faint sound came from behind him.
June turned immediately.
A figure stepped through the crystal formations.
Mira Solen.
June exhaled.
"Hey. Glad it's you."
Mira looked him over quickly.
"You alright?"
"Yeah. Mostly. I think I bruised my pride more than anything."
Mira glanced at the terrain around them.
"No comms?"
June lifted his wrist.
"Dead. Or blocked. Either way, we're on our own for now."
Mira nodded slowly, her gaze scanning the horizon.
"This place feels different."
June followed her line of sight.
"Yeah. Like the planet's watching us."
Mira didn't dismiss it.
"Movement patterns in the vegetation," she said quietly. "They're not wind-driven."
June blinked.
"...You really know how to make that worse."
Mira's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Something's coming."
June sighed.
"Of course it is."
The ground shifted slightly.
Not violently.
Just enough to feel.
June lowered his stance instinctively.
"Tell me it's small and fluffy."
Mira didn't answer.
The first creature emerged from behind a crystal ridge.
It resembled a wolf in posture—but its body was covered in layered chitin plating like an insect. Multiple smaller eyes ran along the sides of its head, reflecting the dim light in fractured glints. Two forward limbs ended in hooked claws, more like a mantis than a mammal.
June stared.
"...That's new."
The creature hissed softly, its plated body shifting as it assessed them.
A second shape moved behind it.
Then a third.
June exhaled slowly.
"...I was really hoping there'd just be one."
Mira shifted her stance.
"They're coordinating."
"Great. Smart bugs. That's exactly what I wanted today."
The first creature lunged.
Fast.
June stepped sideways, the creature's claws slicing through empty air. He grabbed one of its forward limbs, redirecting its momentum as Mira struck low toward its exposed underside.
The creature twisted mid-motion.
Adapted.
Too fast.
June pulled back.
"Okay, yeah. Definitely not basic wildlife."
The second creature circled, its multiple eyes tracking them.
Mira shifted slightly closer to June.
"They're testing us."
June nodded.
"Yeah… I don't like being the test."
The first creature lunged again.
June stepped forward this time, striking at the seam between its plating. The impact landed solidly, forcing the creature back.
Mira followed immediately, her strike precise and controlled.
The creature staggered.
Then recovered.
June blinked.
"...Okay, that's concerning."
The third creature moved.
Then all three attacked at once.
June exhaled sharply.
"...Well."
He adjusted his stance.
"Guess we're doing this the hard way."
Mira didn't respond.
She moved.
And June followed.
Part 2 — Pressure
The first creature reached them a fraction before the others.
June shifted to meet it, stepping inside the arc of its strike. Its hooked limb cut past his shoulder, close enough that he felt the air split beside his helmet.
"Fast," he muttered.
Mira moved at the same time, her strike landing low along the creature's plated side. The impact rang against hardened chitin, forcing it sideways but not dropping it.
The second creature lunged.
June twisted, barely avoiding the snapping mandibles that clamped shut where his arm had been. He drove his elbow into the creature's head, forcing it back.
"...Okay, yeah, definitely not friendly."
The third creature circled wider, its multiple eyes tracking both of them.
"They're spacing," Mira said quietly.
June nodded.
"Yeah. I noticed. Not a fan."
The first creature recovered faster than expected.
It lunged again.
June stepped back, but the second creature cut off his movement, forcing him to pivot sharply. Mira shifted closer, covering his blind side.
The coordination between them formed naturally.
No signals.
No commands.
Just instinct.
The third creature struck.
Mira ducked beneath its sweeping limb, her movement controlled and precise. She drove her strike upward, hitting a seam beneath its plating.
The creature recoiled.
June followed immediately, stepping forward and striking at the same point.
The creature staggered.
But didn't fall.
"...They're tougher than Blue-tier," June said.
Mira didn't disagree.
The first creature lunged again.
June caught the limb this time, redirecting it sideways as Mira struck again. The repeated impacts began to crack the plating along its side.
The creature hissed sharply.
Then it adapted.
Its movement changed.
Less aggressive.
More measured.
June noticed instantly.
"...Yeah. It's learning."
The second creature moved again, circling closer.
Mira adjusted her stance.
"They're not rushing."
"They're trying to wear us down."
June exhaled slowly.
"Of course they are. Because this day wasn't going badly enough already."
The first creature lunged again.
June stepped forward this time, committing fully.
His strike landed hard against the cracked plating.
The chitin fractured.
Mira followed immediately, her movement precise.
The creature collapsed.
One down.
June exhaled.
"...Okay. That's progress."
The second creature lunged immediately.
Faster now.
More aggressive.
June stepped sideways, but the third creature cut across his path, forcing him back.
"...And that's less progress."
Mira shifted beside him.
"Two left."
"Yeah. I noticed."
The creatures circled again.
Closer now.
More cautious.
June rolled his shoulders slightly, adjusting his stance.
"You know," he said quietly, "I was hoping this planet would be a little less hostile."
One of the creatures hissed.
June blinked.
"...Okay, yeah, I probably deserved that."
Mira almost smiled.
Then both creatures attacked at once.
Part 3 — Steel and Pressure
The second creature lunged first.
June stepped back, his hand already moving to his side. He pulled the compact baton from his hip, the weapon snapping outward with a sharp metallic click as it extended to full length.
The matte-black baton hummed faintly as energy lines flickered along its length, stabilizing the reinforced alloy core. The grip molded automatically to his palm, locking into place.
Mira glanced at the weapon, one brow lifting slightly.
"You're just now pulling that out?"
June gave a small shrug.
"Saving it for a special occasion."
"Alright," June muttered. "That makes me feel slightly better."
The creature closed the distance.
June stepped forward and swung.
The baton struck the creature's plated shoulder with a heavy crack, the impact sending vibrations up his arm. The plating held — but the creature staggered slightly.
"...Okay, tougher than I hoped."
The third creature moved.
Mira stepped forward.
Her weapon unfolded in her hands — two slim blades sliding outward from a compact dual-hilt grip. The edges shimmered faintly as a thin energy line formed along the blade's surface, stabilizing the cutting edge.
Twin short swords.
Lightweight.
Precise.
Designed for controlled movement.
June glanced at her weapons, then smirked slightly.
"Now isn't that the pot calling the kettle black."
Mira didn't speak.
She moved.
The creature lunged toward June.
Mira stepped in from the side, her blade cutting across the seam June had already cracked. The energy edge bit deeper this time, slicing between the chitin layers.
The creature recoiled.
June followed instantly.
He drove the baton forward, striking the exposed seam.
The plating fractured further.
The second creature attacked.
June pivoted, raising the baton to block. The hooked limb struck the reinforced shaft, sparks flickering briefly as the impact pushed him back half a step.
"...Yeah, definitely stronger."
Mira shifted beside him, her posture low and controlled. Her blades remained steady, angled slightly to intercept the next strike.
"They're adjusting to the weapons," she said quietly.
June nodded.
"Of course they are. Why wouldn't they?"
The creatures circled again.
Closer now.
Their movements slower.
More cautious.
June rolled his shoulders, adjusting his grip on the baton. The weapon hummed faintly as the internal stabilizers compensated for the previous impacts.
"You know," June muttered quietly, "I was hoping we'd regroup before fighting something like this."
One of the creatures hissed again.
June blinked.
"...I feel like it's judging me."
Mira almost smiled again.
Then both creatures attacked.
June stepped forward.
This time—
They met them head on.
Part 4 — Adaptation
The first creature lunged low.
June stepped into the motion instead of retreating. His baton swung downward in a tight arc, the reinforced shaft striking the creature's forelimb with a sharp crack. The impact forced the limb sideways, disrupting its balance.
"Left!" June warned.
Mira was already moving.
Her right blade cut across the exposed seam June had opened earlier. The energy-lined edge bit deeper this time, slicing through the cracked plating. A dark fluid spilled across the mineral ground.
The creature recoiled violently.
The second creature attacked immediately.
It came from the side, faster than before.
June barely caught the motion in time. He rotated his baton upward, intercepting the hooked limb mid-swing. Sparks flickered as the creature's claw scraped against the reinforced alloy.
The impact drove June back two steps.
"...Okay," he muttered, adjusting his grip. "Definitely getting stronger."
Mira shifted behind him, her blades angled defensively.
"They're coordinating more."
"Yeah, I noticed. I'm starting to take that personally."
The first creature recovered faster than expected.
It lunged again.
June stepped forward this time, committing to the movement. His baton struck the cracked plating with a heavy blow, the fracture widening across the creature's shoulder.
Mira followed immediately.
Her left blade slipped into the opening.
The creature collapsed.
Two down.
June exhaled.
"...Alright, that's better."
The final creature didn't retreat.
It watched.
Multiple eyes shifting between them.
Its posture lowered.
Mira noticed first.
"It's changing."
June frowned.
"...Yeah. That's not good."
The creature moved differently now.
Slower.
More controlled.
Then—
It lunged.
Faster than before.
June barely raised the baton in time as the creature's limb slammed into it. The impact forced him backward, boots grinding against crystal dust.
"...Okay, definitely stronger."
The creature followed immediately.
No hesitation.
Mira stepped forward, her blades flashing as she cut toward the creature's exposed side. The creature twisted mid-motion, avoiding the strike.
"That's new," June muttered.
The creature attacked again.
June sidestepped, swinging the baton toward its head. The blow landed solidly, but the creature absorbed the impact and continued forward.
"...Yeah, it's adapting."
Mira shifted closer.
"We finish it quickly."
"Agreed."
The creature circled once more.
Then it attacked.
Both of them moved at the same time.
June stepped forward, drawing its attention.
Mira flanked.
The creature lunged at June.
He blocked with the baton, redirecting its movement just enough—
Mira's blades cut across the weakened seam.
The creature staggered.
June followed.
One final strike.
The baton slammed into the fractured plating.
The creature collapsed.
Silence returned.
June stood there for a moment, breathing steady.
"...Well," he said quietly. "That could've gone worse."
Mira lowered her blades, the energy edges dimming as the weapon folded back into its compact form.
"You're injured."
June glanced down at the shallow cut along his armor.
"...Yeah. I've had worse."
He scanned the terrain again.
The silence didn't feel empty.
It felt like something watching from farther away.
June exhaled slowly.
"...Tell me that was the only group."
Mira didn't answer immediately.
She was already looking toward the distant crystal ridge.
Movement.
Far off.
Multiple shapes.
Mira spoke quietly.
"It wasn't."
June stared for a second.
Then sighed.
"...Of course it wasn't."
Part 5 — Movement in the Distance
The shapes in the distance moved slowly between the crystal ridges.
Not rushing.
Not charging.
Just… moving.
June narrowed his eyes, adjusting his stance slightly as he extended the baton again. The weapon locked into place with a soft metallic click, its faint hum returning as the internal systems stabilized.
"How many?" he asked quietly.
Mira stepped slightly forward, her gaze focused.
"At least four."
June exhaled slowly.
"...Yeah. That's not ideal."
The wind shifted slightly across the terrain, carrying a faint metallic scent. The crystal formations cast long shadows across the ground, creating uneven patches of visibility.
June noticed immediately.
"Terrain favors ambush," he said.
Mira nodded.
"And them."
June shifted his grip.
"Alright… so we move before they get closer."
Mira glanced at him.
"Retreat?"
"Reposition," June corrected.
He gestured toward a nearby ridge — higher ground, but with narrow approaches between crystal formations.
"If we move there, they can't surround us."
Mira followed his line of sight.
"Agreed."
They moved.
Not fast.
Controlled.
June took point this time, his baton angled slightly forward as he scanned the terrain. Mira moved half a step behind, her twin blades extended again, the faint energy edge forming along their length.
The ground beneath them shifted slightly with each step.
June noticed.
"...Still hate that."
Mira didn't disagree.
They reached the ridge just as the first creature emerged fully from the crystal formations.
Different from the first group.
Larger.
Heavier.
Its body resembled a large feline predator, but its back was covered in layered chitin plates like overlapping insect armor. Two additional limbs extended from its shoulders, smaller but ending in hooked claws.
June blinked.
"...Okay, that's new."
The creature lowered its body slightly, its multiple eyes reflecting the dim light.
Three more shapes moved behind it.
June exhaled slowly.
"Yeah… definitely not alone."
Mira shifted beside him.
"They're testing distance."
"Yeah. I noticed."
The lead creature moved forward slowly.
Deliberate.
Measured.
June rolled his shoulders slightly, adjusting his stance.
"You ever get the feeling we're being evaluated?"
Mira's gaze remained fixed on the creature.
"Yes."
June nodded.
"...Yeah. That's worse."
The creature lunged.
Fast.
June stepped forward to meet it, baton swinging in a tight arc. The impact landed against the creature's forward limb, the reinforced alloy ringing sharply.
The creature barely slowed.
"...Okay, that's concerning."
Mira moved in from the side, her blades cutting toward the seam beneath the creature's shoulder. The energy edge bit into the plating, forcing the creature to recoil.
The second creature lunged.
June pivoted, intercepting the strike with his baton, sparks flickering briefly as claw met reinforced alloy.
"They're stronger," he muttered.
Mira adjusted her stance.
"And faster."
The third and fourth creatures moved.
Then all four attacked.
June exhaled sharply.
"...Alright."
He tightened his grip.
"Here we go again."
Part 6 — Escalation
The lead creature moved first.
Faster than the others.
June stepped forward, baton already in motion. The reinforced shaft struck the creature's forward limb with a sharp metallic crack, but the impact barely slowed it.
"...Yeah, that's not great."
The creature twisted mid-motion, its secondary limbs snapping forward. June pulled back just in time, the hooked claws slicing across his armor, leaving shallow grooves along the reinforced plating.
"Okay," June muttered. "That was too close."
Mira moved.
Her twin blades flashed, the energy edges humming as she cut toward the exposed seam beneath the creature's shoulder. The strike landed clean, forcing the creature sideways.
The second creature lunged.
June pivoted, raising his baton to intercept. The impact rattled through his arms as claw met reinforced alloy.
"They're stronger," he said.
"And coordinated," Mira added.
The third creature moved wide, circling behind them.
June adjusted his stance immediately, stepping back toward Mira so they couldn't be separated.
"Yeah, I see that. Not a fan."
The fourth creature lunged.
Mira ducked beneath the strike, her blade cutting upward. The energy edge bit into chitin plating, drawing dark fluid.
The creature recoiled.
June followed with a heavy strike from his baton, the impact widening the fracture.
The creatures didn't retreat.
They adjusted.
Then all four attacked again.
June exhaled slowly.
"...Alright."
He tightened his grip.
"Definitely not a quick fight."
Part 7 — The Shift
The first creature slammed into June's guard.
The force drove him back a full step, boots grinding across crystal dust. His baton vibrated in his grip as the creature's hooked limbs scraped against the reinforced alloy.
"...Okay, definitely stronger," June muttered, pushing back.
Mira moved past him, her twin blades flashing in a tight, controlled arc. One blade deflected a strike while the other cut toward the exposed seam June had cracked earlier.
The creature twisted.
Too fast.
It avoided the deeper cut, but the edge still carved a shallow line across its plating.
The second creature lunged from the side.
June pivoted, swinging the baton low. The reinforced shaft connected with the creature's front limb, forcing it sideways.
The third creature circled behind them.
June stepped backward instinctively, aligning himself with Mira so they covered each other's blind spots.
"Still think regrouping would've been nice," he muttered.
Mira didn't answer.
She was already moving.
The fourth creature attacked.
Mira ducked beneath the strike, her blades cutting upward. The energy edge bit into the creature's underside, forcing it back.
June followed immediately, driving the baton into the same spot.
The creature staggered.
But didn't fall.
"...They're tougher than the last group," June said.
"Yes."
The creatures slowed.
Not retreating.
Watching.
Then—
The ground shifted.
Subtle.
But both of them felt it.
June frowned.
"...You feel that?"
Mira nodded.
"Yes."
The creatures hesitated.
Just for a moment.
Then they moved again — but this time, their behavior changed.
Less aggressive.
More cautious.
June noticed immediately.
"...That's new."
The wind shifted across the ridge, carrying a faint vibration through the crystal formations. The ground beneath them pulsed once, like something moving deep below the surface.
The creatures reacted.
They pulled back slightly.
Mira's eyes narrowed.
"They're responding to something."
June followed her gaze toward the distant horizon.
Beyond the crystal ridges, the terrain dipped into a shallow valley. The light there looked different — dimmer, distorted slightly by shifting air.
"...Tell me that's not another problem," June said quietly.
Mira didn't answer.
Because the creatures retreated.
Not fully.
But enough.
June blinked.
"...Okay, that's definitely new."
The lead creature gave one final hiss.
Then turned.
The others followed.
They disappeared between the crystal formations.
Silence returned.
June lowered the baton slowly.
"...I don't like that."
Mira watched the valley.
"Neither do I."
The ground pulsed again.
Stronger this time.
June exhaled quietly.
"...Yeah. We're going that way, aren't we?"
Mira nodded.
"Yes."
June sighed.
"...Of course we are."
Part 8 — The Valley
They didn't move immediately.
June kept his baton extended, scanning the crystal ridges where the creatures had disappeared. The silence that followed didn't feel natural. Even the faint movement in the vegetation seemed to slow, like the environment itself was waiting.
"You ever notice," June said quietly, "how the silence is always worse after something leaves?"
Mira kept her eyes on the valley.
"Because it usually means something else is coming."
"...Yeah," June muttered. "That sounds about right."
The ground pulsed again.
Stronger this time.
The vibration traveled through the ridge beneath their feet, subtle but unmistakable. Small fragments of crystal shifted and slid down the slope, clicking softly against each other.
June frowned.
"That's not just movement. That's… deeper."
Mira nodded.
"Subterranean."
June blinked.
"...You had to say that."
They began moving.
Carefully.
June took point again, stepping down from the ridge toward the shallow valley. The terrain changed gradually as they descended. The crystal formations thinned, replaced by darker mineral ground streaked with faint glowing veins.
The air felt colder here.
Heavier.
June noticed the change immediately.
"...Temperature dropped."
Mira glanced at the ground.
"And the mineral composition changed."
The faint glowing veins pulsed beneath the surface, dim amber light moving slowly through the rock like something flowing beneath the crust.
June slowed.
"...Okay, that's not normal."
The valley opened wider ahead of them.
The ground dipped gently before rising again in a shallow basin surrounded by fractured ridges. The air here shimmered slightly, like heat distortion, but the temperature remained cold.
June stopped.
"...You see that?"
Mira nodded.
At the center of the basin, something stood.
Not natural.
Not terrain.
Structured.
Tall, angular formations rose from the ground in uneven patterns. The surface looked metallic in places, but worn — as if time had eroded parts of it away. Sections of dark stone merged with unfamiliar materials, forming something ancient and partially buried.
June exhaled slowly.
"...Yeah. That's definitely not natural."
Mira stepped forward slightly, studying the structure.
"Artificial."
"Ancient," June added.
The ground pulsed again.
This time—
Stronger.
A faint vibration traveled through the structure itself.
June tightened his grip on the baton.
"...I don't think we're the first ones to find this."
Mira scanned the surrounding ridges.
"No."
June followed her gaze.
Footprints.
Not theirs.
Fresh.
Multiple.
June frowned.
"...Okay. That means someone else is close."
Mira nodded.
"Yes."
June exhaled slowly.
"...Honestly? That might be the best news we've had all day."
Then—
A distant sound echoed across the valley.
Metal.
Movement.
Not wind.
Not creatures.
Someone else was here.
Part 9 — Not Alone
June lifted his baton slightly, angling it toward the sound.
The valley seemed to hold its breath.
The metallic noise came again — faint, but distinct. Something shifted near the far side of the structure, just beyond a broken ridge of dark stone.
June lowered his voice.
"Human?"
Mira didn't answer immediately.
Her eyes tracked the movement carefully, scanning the shadows between the angled formations.
"Possibly," she said quietly. "But not certain."
June nodded slowly.
"...Yeah. Fair."
The ground beneath them pulsed again, the faint amber veins glowing slightly brighter before dimming. The structure ahead responded with a low vibration, barely audible but strong enough to feel through their boots.
June frowned.
"...That's definitely reacting to something."
They moved closer.
Slow.
Deliberate.
June kept his baton raised while Mira advanced slightly to his left, her twin blades angled downward but ready. The basin floor shifted subtly beneath their steps, the mineral ground smoother near the structure, worn by time or movement.
As they approached, more details became visible.
The structure wasn't a single object.
It was a cluster.
Angular pillars rose unevenly from the ground, some partially collapsed, others leaning at unnatural angles. Faint lines etched across their surfaces glowed softly — not bright, but enough to catch the eye.
June slowed.
"...This place feels old."
Mira nodded.
"Very."
The metallic sound came again.
Closer now.
June shifted his stance.
"Alright. I'm hoping that's someone we know."
Mira glanced toward the ridge.
Movement.
A shadow passed between two angled pillars.
June tightened his grip.
"...Definitely not wind."
They moved around the nearest formation, stepping carefully between broken fragments of dark material embedded in the ground. The air felt heavier here, like the basin trapped sound and movement.
Then—
The shadow moved again.
A figure stepped partially into view.
June blinked.
"...Wait—"
But before he could finish—
The ground pulsed violently.
The structure vibrated.
Dust fell from the angled pillars.
June's posture snapped tight.
"...That's not good."
Mira shifted instantly, blades raised.
The vibration grew stronger.
Then—
The ground beneath the structure cracked.
A low rumble rolled through the basin.
June exhaled slowly.
"...Yeah. Definitely not good."
The figure across the basin turned toward them—
And whatever lay beneath the structure began to move.
Part 10 — The Guardian
The creature rose slowly from the fractured ground.
Not with a roar.
Not with sudden violence.
But with weight.
The basin seemed to sink beneath it as it pulled itself upward, massive limbs unfolding from beneath layers of hardened biological armor. Its body didn't resemble anything they had encountered before. Smooth, overlapping plates formed along its torso — not chitin, not scales, but something denser, grown rather than formed.
Four primary limbs anchored into the ground, each ending in broad, hooked claws designed for digging and crushing. Behind them, two smaller secondary limbs folded close to its body, twitching slightly as it adjusted to the surface.
Its head lifted.
Wide.
Low.
Its jaw split into layered sections, revealing rows of blunt crushing teeth instead of fangs. Multiple eyes ran along the sides of its head, glowing faintly amber as they adjusted to the light.
It was not a predator built for speed.
It was built for dominance.
June felt the pressure immediately.
"…That's not normal."
Mira didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
The ground beneath the creature cracked further as it shifted its weight. The structure behind it trembled, fragments sliding loose from the angled pillars.
June tightened his grip on his baton.
"…We're not fighting that."
Mira nodded slowly.
"No."
The creature stepped forward.
The basin trembled.
Each movement felt deliberate.
Measured.
Ancient.
Then June noticed something behind it.
"…Wait."
Mira followed his gaze.
Beneath the creature — partially exposed from the collapse — a circular structure had been uncovered. Smooth metallic stone formed a ring embedded into the ground, faint lines etched across its surface.
It wasn't natural.
It wasn't rock.
It was too symmetrical.
"…Is that…" June began.
Mira stepped slightly forward.
"A structure."
The creature shifted again, revealing more of the ring beneath it.
The circular frame glowed faintly.
June blinked.
"…That looks like a gate."
The creature turned its head slowly toward them.
Its eyes locked onto their movement.
June lowered his voice.
"…Yeah… it's guarding it."
The ground trembled again.
The creature moved.
Fast.
Far faster than something its size should have been able to.
June barely raised his baton before the creature's limb slammed into the ground near them. The impact shattered crystal formations and sent shockwaves through the basin.
June stumbled back.
"…Okay—yeah—definitely not fighting that."
Mira moved beside him, blades raised.
"We fall back."
They retreated.
Slow.
Controlled.
The creature followed.
Each step cracking the ground beneath it.
June glanced at the gate again.
"…If that's what I think it is…"
Mira nodded.
"It may be the only way off this planet."
The creature lunged again.
The basin shook violently.
And the Guardian began its hunt.
Part 11 — The Shockwave
The Guardian's next step shook the basin.
The ground didn't just tremble — it shifted. Cracks spread outward from beneath the creature, racing across the mineral surface like lightning through stone. The faint amber veins beneath the ground pulsed brighter, then dimmed again.
June barely kept his footing.
"That thing moves like a mountain," he muttered, backing away carefully.
Mira didn't respond. Her eyes stayed fixed on the creature as it advanced, slow and deliberate, like it already knew they couldn't escape.
The Guardian lowered its head slightly.
The air compressed.
Then it struck.
Its forelimb slammed into the ground where they had stood seconds earlier. The impact shattered crystal formations and launched fragments outward in a violent spray.
June ducked behind a broken ridge.
"...Yeah, we're definitely not fighting that."
Mira moved beside him, scanning for escape paths.
"That gate is still partially buried."
June glanced toward the ring again.
"If that's a way off this planet, we need it active."
The creature moved again.
The basin trembled.
And far beyond the valley—
The shockwave spread.
Elsewhere
David & Nyra
David stopped mid-step.
The ground beneath his boots vibrated faintly, like distant thunder rolling beneath the surface. The crystal formations around them rattled softly, dust drifting down from their edges.
Nyra looked toward the horizon.
"You feel that?"
David nodded slowly.
"Yeah."
He turned toward the direction of the disturbance. The air there seemed slightly distorted, the faint shimmer barely visible between distant ridges.
"That's not natural terrain movement," Nyra said quietly.
David's eyes narrowed.
"No."
The ground pulsed again.
Stronger.
David felt it in his chest this time, the vibration settling deeper than before.
Nyra adjusted her stance.
"Something big."
David nodded.
"Yeah."
He started moving.
Nyra followed without hesitation.
They didn't speak again.
They were already heading toward the disturbance.
Elsewhere
Castiel & Lucian
Lucian stopped first.
Castiel noticed immediately.
"You feel it?" Castiel asked.
Lucian nodded once.
The ground vibrated faintly beneath them. Loose mineral dust shifted across the surface, sliding toward lower ground.
Castiel looked toward the horizon.
"...That's not just terrain."
"No," Lucian agreed quietly.
Another tremor rolled through the ground.
Castiel exhaled slowly.
"...Whatever that is, it's big."
Lucian adjusted his stance.
"We move."
Castiel nodded.
They changed direction immediately.
Both of them moving toward the disturbance.
Back at the Basin
The Guardian stepped forward again.
June and Mira retreated, keeping distance as the creature advanced.
Behind it—
The circular structure glowed faintly.
The gate was waking up.
And the Guardian wasn't letting them near it.
Part 12 — Closing Distance
The Guardian stepped forward.
The basin cracked beneath its weight. Stone fractured outward from each movement, and the air itself seemed to compress around it. Dust drifted slowly through the dim amber glow rising from the partially uncovered ring behind it.
June backed up the slope beside Mira.
"You know," June muttered, trying to keep his voice steady, "I feel like this is one of those moments where we should already be running."
Mira didn't take her eyes off the creature.
"We don't know where."
June glanced toward the glowing ring again.
"...Actually, I think we do."
Movement appeared along the ridge.
June blinked.
"...Wait."
Two figures emerged between the crystal formations.
David.
Nyra.
Relief flickered across June's face.
"About time."
David slowed as he stepped into view.
Then he saw the creature.
He stopped.
The world narrowed.
The Guardian lifted its head slowly, its multiple amber eyes adjusting as they locked onto him.
Pressure filled the air.
Then—

A pause.

David's eyes narrowed slightly.
Then—
I am
This one is a Guardian Ancient.
The creature shifted again, its claws digging deeper into fractured stone.
I am
Its been here long before time.
David's gaze shifted toward the glowing ring behind it.

It guards the Gate.
Nyra stepped beside David.
"What is it?"
David didn't take his eyes off the creature.
"...Something we can't fight."
June exhaled quietly.
"Yeah, we've already come to that conclusion."
Nyra followed David's gaze toward the glowing ring.
"...Is that a gate?"
David nodded slightly.
"I think so."
The ground trembled again.
Movement appeared behind them.
Lucian.
Castiel beside him.
They stopped when they saw the Guardian.
Castiel exhaled slowly.
"...That's new."
June shook his head slightly.
"You're late,... captain obvious ."
The Guardian shifted its weight.
The ground cracked again.

David's eyes shifted toward the ring.
The etched lines across the circular structure glowed brighter.
The Guardian lowered its head.
And began moving toward them.
Their only escape—
Was behind it.
Part 13 — The Plan
The Guardian advanced slowly.
Each step cracked the basin floor, the sound deep and heavy like distant thunder. Dust drifted from the surrounding crystal formations, and the faint amber glow behind the creature intensified as the circular structure continued to awaken.
No one moved.
They all understood the same thing.
They couldn't fight it.
June broke the silence first.
"So… we all agree we're not killing that, right?"
Lucian didn't take his eyes off the creature.
"No."
Castiel studied it carefully, his expression calm but focused.
"Even if we could injure it, we wouldn't survive long enough."
Nyra glanced toward the glowing ring.
"Then we need to get to that gate."
Mira nodded.
"Yes."
The problem was obvious.
The Guardian stood directly between them and their escape.
June exhaled slowly.
"Yeah… that's not ideal."
The creature shifted again, its massive head turning slightly as it tracked their movements. The multiple amber eyes moved independently, studying each of them.
David watched quietly.
Calculating.

Broken crystal ridges.

Possible paths.
I am:
"It is territorial."
David's eyes narrowed slightly.
I am:
"It will respond to movement."
He understood.
David turned slightly toward the others.
"We draw it away."
June blinked.
"...We?"
David nodded.
"We create an opening."
Lucian stepped forward slightly.
"Too dangerous."
David didn't disagree.
"It's the only option."
The Guardian shifted again, sensing their movement.
Nyra looked at David.
"How?"
David scanned the terrain again.
"If we split its attention…"
Castiel understood immediately.
"You want to divide it."
David nodded.
Castiel exhaled slowly.
"That's risky."
June gave a quiet laugh.
"Yeah… I feel like that's becoming a theme."

David looked at each of them.
"We move together at first. Then split."
Lucian nodded once.
"Agreed."
Mira adjusted her grip on her blades.
Nyra stepped closer to David.
Castiel rolled his shoulders slightly.
June tightened his grip on his baton.
The Guardian lowered its head.
The air compressed again.
June exhaled slowly.
"...Well."
He glanced at David.
"This is going to hurt, isn't it?"
David didn't answer.
The Guardian lunged.
And they moved.
Part 14 — First Clash
The Guardian moved faster than anything its size should have allowed.
The ground exploded beneath its first step.
"Move!" Lucian shouted.
They scattered instantly.
David moved left with Nyra.
Castiel and Lucian moved right.
June and Mira broke toward the broken ridge ahead.
The Guardian tracked them all.
Its head shifted slightly, multiple amber eyes adjusting as it evaluated targets.
Then—
It chose.
June.
"...Why me?" June muttered.
The Guardian lunged.
The ground shattered where he had stood moments earlier. Stone fragments blasted outward, striking his armor as he rolled behind a broken crystal ridge.
"Okay, yeah, definitely not fair!" June called out.
Mira moved beside him, her blades already raised.
"Keep moving."
June didn't argue.
They shifted again as the Guardian advanced, its massive limb slamming down behind them. The impact cracked the ridge, sending fractures spreading outward.
Meanwhile—
David moved across the basin, drawing the creature's attention further.

"You're pulling it away."
David nodded slightly.
"Trying."
The Guardian shifted again.
Its head turned.
Now tracking David.
"That worked," Nyra said quietly.
"For now."
The creature lunged again.
David barely avoided the strike as the ground shattered beside him. The shockwave knocked him sideways, dust filling the air.
Nyra moved in close, steadying her footing.
"You okay?"
David nodded.
"Yeah."
Across the basin—
Castiel and Lucian moved along the opposite ridge.
Lucian scanned the terrain quickly.
"We need to keep it divided."
Castiel nodded.
The Guardian shifted again.
Now tracking movement from multiple directions.
It hesitated.
Just briefly.

June noticed.
"...Hey!"
He shouted across the basin.
"It's working!"
The Guardian turned toward his voice.
"...Never mind," June muttered.
It lunged again.
June dove aside as the creature's limb slammed into the ground, the impact sending cracks racing across the basin.
Mira struck at the limb as it passed, her blade cutting against the dense armor. The strike barely left a mark.
"...Yeah," June said breathlessly. "We're definitely not killing this thing."
The Guardian pulled its limb back.
Then—
The circular ring behind it pulsed brighter.
Light formed along its edges.

Part 15 — Pressure
The Guardian surged forward again.
This time it didn't choose a single target.
It advanced toward the center.
Toward all of them.
The basin cracked beneath its weight, fractures spreading outward like veins splitting across stone. Dust lifted into the air, turning the space into a shifting haze of drifting particles.
Lucian stepped forward slightly.
"Keep distance," he ordered.
Castiel moved beside him, eyes locked on the creature's movement.
"It's adjusting."
The Guardian's head lowered.
Then it struck.
Its forelimb slammed into the ground between them, the shockwave throwing Castiel off balance. He slid across the fractured surface, boots grinding as he tried to stabilize.
Lucian grabbed his arm, pulling him back upright.
"You good?"
Castiel exhaled slowly.
"Yeah."
Across the basin, June and Mira shifted again, keeping the creature's attention divided.
June swung his baton toward the creature's limb as it passed, the reinforced alloy striking the armor with a dull impact that barely slowed it.
"...Yeah, I didn't expect that to work."
Mira stepped in beside him, blades flashing as she cut toward the underside of the limb. The strike left only a shallow mark before the creature pulled back.
June exhaled.
"Nice, you scratched it."
The Guardian stepped forward again.
Closer now.
David moved along the edge of the basin, drawing its attention.

Then—
It moved faster.
Far faster.
Its limb swept across the basin, forcing everyone back at once. The impact shattered crystal formations and sent debris raining down around them.
June barely ducked behind a broken ridge.
"...Okay, that was worse."
Castiel stepped forward again, adjusting his stance.
"It's getting more aggressive."
Lucian nodded.
"Gate must be triggering it."

The Guardian reacted instantly.
Its head snapped toward the gate.

The ring brightened further.

David nodded.
"Yeah."
The Guardian moved.
Fast.
Faster than before.
It lunged toward the gate.
"Move!" Lucian shouted.
They scattered again.
The creature slammed its limb into the ground near the gate, the impact sending shockwaves through the basin. Fragments of stone shattered outward, dust filling the air.
The Guardian positioned itself directly in front of the gate.
Blocking it.
June exhaled sharply.
"...Of course it does that."
Castiel stepped forward slightly, studying the creature.
"It knows."
Lucian nodded.
"It's protecting it."
The Guardian lowered its head.
Watching them.
Waiting.
The gate pulsed behind it, stable but clearly not permanent.

Mira adjusted her stance.
"It's our only option."
The Guardian stepped forward again.
The ground trembled.
The gate pulsed behind it.
Their escape—
Was now open.
But the Guardian wasn't letting them leave.
Part 17 — Breakthrough
The Guardian lowered its head.
The ground beneath its forelimbs cracked as it shifted its weight forward, massive claws digging deep into fractured stone. The gate pulsed behind it, dark energy swirling within the circular frame.
They didn't have much time.
David stepped forward.
"We push left."
Lucian nodded immediately.
"June. Mira. Draw its attention."
June blinked.
"...Why is it always us?"
Mira didn't hesitate.
"We move."
They broke left.
June sprinted across the basin, weaving between fractured crystal ridges. Mira moved beside him, blades ready, her posture low and controlled.
The Guardian tracked them.
Its head turned.
Then it moved.
Fast.
Its forelimb slammed down behind them, the impact shattering the ground and forcing June to dive forward.
"Okay, yeah, that was too close!"
Mira pivoted, striking toward the creature's limb as it passed. Her blade scraped against dense armor, leaving only a shallow mark.
But it worked.
The Guardian shifted toward them.
David moved.
He sprinted toward the gate with Nyra, Lucian, and Castiel following close behind.
System: Gate Stability — Fluctuating

Nyra glanced back.
"It's not going to stay open long."
David nodded.

The Guardian realized too late.
It shifted again, pulling its attention away from June and Mira.
"Move!" Lucian shouted.
They pushed forward.
The Guardian lunged.
The ground exploded between them and the gate.
David cut right, avoiding the impact as debris scattered across the basin.
Castiel stumbled slightly as the shockwave hit.
Lucian grabbed him, pulling him forward.
"You good?"
"Yeah," Castiel said, though his breathing was heavier now.
Behind them—
June and Mira moved again, closing distance.
"We're coming in!" June shouted.
The Guardian turned again.
Trying to track all of them.
David saw the opening.
"Now!"
They sprinted.
The gate pulsed brighter.
System: Gate Stability — Degrading
The Guardian lunged.
Closer.
Closer.
They were almost there.
Then—
The creature struck again.
And the basin shattered beneath them.
Part 18 — The Cost
The ground split beneath them.
David cleared the fracture first, boots striking unstable stone as the basin continued collapsing. Nyra followed close behind, barely making it across before the ground gave way.
Lucian crossed next.
Castiel moved after him—
The Guardian shifted.
Not with a limb.
Something else moved.
From beneath its armored chest, three long appendages unfolded.
They were not limbs.
They were tentacles.
Thick at the base, narrowing as they extended, each one moving like a serpent. Smooth biological armor ran along their length, but the ends split open into fanged, jaw-like tips — lined with curved teeth designed to pierce and hold.
June's eyes widened.
"...That's new."
The tentacles struck.
Fast.
Too fast.
One slammed into the ground beside Lucian.
Another lashed toward June.
The third—
Shot straight for Castiel.
"Castiel—!" Nyra shouted.
Too late.
The tentacle struck.
The fanged tip slammed into Castiel's chest—
Then split.
Two curved fangs punched forward.
One pierced through his left shoulder.
The other drove through his right.
The force lifted him off the ground.
Castiel gasped sharply, the sound cut short as blood spilled across his armor.
"Castiel!" Lucian shouted.
The tentacle lifted him slightly, the fangs embedded deep through both shoulders, holding him in place.
Castiel's jaw tightened, pain flashing across his usually calm expression.
The Guardian pulled back.
Dragging him.
June moved forward instinctively.
"Let him go!"
David stepped forward.
His eyes narrowed.

The tentacle shifted again, tightening its hold.
Castiel exhaled sharply, blood running down his armor.
David moved.
The world seemed to slow.
His hand lifted.
The space in front of him distorted slightly.

David stepped forward—
And cut.
The motion was clean.
Precise.
The tentacle's head separated instantly.
The severed portion fell, still embedded through Castiel's shoulders.
The remaining two tentacles recoiled violently.
The Guardian shifted, reacting to the sudden loss.
Lucian moved instantly.
He grabbed the severed tentacle, pulling carefully as the curved fangs slowly slid backward, tearing free from Castiel's shoulders.
Castiel clenched his teeth but didn't scream.
Blood spilled heavily as the fangs withdrew.
June stepped in, supporting him as Lucian finished pulling the severed piece away.
"...He's bleeding bad," June said quietly.
Castiel's breathing grew shallow, his posture weakening.
Lucian shifted him upright.
"We move."
June grabbed his other side, helping support his weight.
They began dragging him toward the gate.
Behind them—
The Guardian surged forward.
David stepped back beside Nyra.
They held the line.
Nyra moved first, striking at the approaching limb to slow it. David followed, repositioning as the creature advanced.
June and Lucian dragged Castiel toward the gate, his boots scraping across fractured stone, blood trailing behind them.
Castiel struggled weakly.
"David—"
Lucian tightened his grip.
"Keep moving."
The Guardian advanced again.
And David and Nyra stood between it—
And their escape.
Part 19 — Hold the Line
The Guardian surged forward.
The basin shook violently beneath its weight. Cracks split across the ground, dust rising into the air as the creature advanced with unstoppable force.
David stepped forward.
Nyra moved beside him.
Behind them—
Castiel's legs gave out.
Lucian caught him before he collapsed completely. Blood poured from both of Castiel's shoulders, soaking into his armor and dripping steadily onto the fractured ground.
"He's losing too much blood," Mira said quietly, already moving to support his other side.
Lucian didn't hesitate.
"We move."
They lifted him.
Castiel gasped sharply as they pulled him upright, pain cutting through his calm composure. His breathing grew uneven, his strength fading quickly.
The Guardian moved again.
David stepped forward.

"Wait…"
His voice was strained, breath uneven.
"Let me go…"
Lucian tightened his grip.
"No."
Castiel tried to pull free, his movements weak but desperate.
"I can still fight…"
June shook his head.
"No, you can't."
Castiel's breathing faltered.
He looked past them.
Toward David.
Toward Nyra.

His head shook weakly.
"I can't leave them…"
June pulled harder.
"You have to."
"No…" Castiel whispered, then louder, voice cracking. "No… I can't…"
He tried to push himself away from them, but his strength failed.
"They're staying behind…"
His breathing shook.
"They're going to die…"
Lucian tightened his grip.
"We're not losing you too."
Castiel looked back again.
"David!"
His voice broke.
"Nyra!"
The Guardian advanced again.
The ground shook.
They reached the gate.
Castiel struggled again, tears forming at the edges of his eyes as he fought to stay.
"Let me go!"
His voice cracked completely now.
"I can fight… I can still fight…"
June shook his head.
"No, you can't."
"I can't leave them!" Castiel shouted, desperation filling his voice.
"They're my friends!"
He tried to pull away again, weakly striking at June's arm.
"Please…"
His voice fell to a broken whisper.
"Don't make me leave them…"
The Guardian surged closer.
Lucian pulled him forward.
"You're going."
"No—!"
Castiel shouted, voice breaking.

They dragged him forward.
Then—
They pulled him through the gate.
His voice cut off as he disappeared into the swirling darkness.
Silence followed.
Only David and Nyra remained.
The Guardian surged forward.
And they held the line.

Only David and Nyra remained.
The Guardian surged forward.
The ground shattered beneath its movement, massive limbs crushing stone as it advanced. Dust filled the air, and the glow of the gate behind them flickered violently.

David nodded.

"No."
Nyra resisted, trying to hold her ground.
"I'm not leaving you."
The Guardian surged forward again.
David grabbed her arm.

She shook her head, tears forming in her eyes.
"No. We go together."
The creature lunged again.
David pushed her back toward the gate.
She resisted, planting her feet.
"I'm not leaving you!"
The Guardian's shadow fell over them.
David made his decision.
He pulled her closer—
Then drove forward.
He shoved her hard.
Nyra stumbled backward—
"David—!"
The Guardian surged again.
David stepped forward and kicked her forward with everything he had left.
She fell backward into the glowing ring—
Her eyes locked onto his.

She vanished into the gate.
David turned back.
The gate flickered behind him.
David remained.

Blood ran down his side as he steadied himself.

The Guardian's shadow fell over him.
He leapt.
The creature struck.
David dove forward—

Darkness swallowed behind him.
Part 22 — Through the Gate
For a moment, there was nothing.
No sound.
No ground.
No air.
Just pressure.
Then—
He hit the ground hard.
Stone.
Cold.
Rough.
David rolled across uneven rock before catching himself against the cave floor. His breathing was heavy, blood still running down his side.
Voices.
"DAVID!"
Nyra reached him first, dropping to her knees beside him.
"David—"
"I'm okay," he said, though his voice was strained.
June stepped forward, relief visible across his face.
"...You scared us."
Lucian helped steady David as he pushed himself upright.
Castiel leaned weakly against the cave wall, his shoulders heavily bandaged, his face pale from blood loss. His eyes locked onto David immediately.
"...You made it."
David nodded slightly.
Then—
The air behind them distorted.
The gate pulsed violently.
Everyone turned.
The swirling darkness inside the circular structure twisted—
Then something forced through.
A massive tentacle burst out of the gate.
"Move!" Lucian shouted.
The tentacle slammed into the cave floor, shattering rock and sending fragments flying. The fanged tip snapped outward, striking blindly as it searched for anything within reach.
June pulled Castiel back.
"What the hell—"
The tentacle pushed further through.
More of its massive length forcing into the cave.
The gate flickered violently.
David stepped forward, eyes locked on the creature forcing its way through.
"It's following us."
The tentacle slammed again, cracking the cave floor.
Rock fell from the ceiling.
Dust filled the air.
The gate began distorting.
The circular ring warped slightly, energy pulling inward.
Nyra's eyes widened.
"...That's not good."
The tentacle wrapped around the circular structure.
The fanged end tightened.
Then—
It pulled.
The gate distorted violently.
Light bent inward.
The air compressed.
June backed away slowly.
"...Yeah, that's really not good."
The ring collapsed inward.
Not like an explosion.
Like space folding.
Stone cracked.
The gate imploded.
A deep pulling force formed as the circular structure began collapsing into itself, dragging rock and debris inward.
The cave trembled violently.
"RUN!" Lucian shouted.
The ceiling cracked.
Stone fell.
Dust filled the cave.
The gate collapsed further—
Then vanished.
The pulling force stopped.
But the cave was collapsing.
And they had seconds to escape.
Part 23 — Collapse
"RUN!"
Lucian's voice cut through the chaos.
The cave ceiling cracked above them, jagged fractures racing across stone as debris began to fall. Dust filled the air, turning everything into a haze of gray and drifting particles.
June grabbed Castiel tighter, throwing Castiel's arm over his shoulder as Lucian supported the other side. Castiel's boots dragged across the ground, leaving streaks of blood behind them.
"Move!" June shouted.
Mira ran ahead, scanning for the fastest route out of the collapsing cave.
Behind them—
The space where the gate had collapsed warped briefly, then snapped shut completely. The pulling force vanished, but the cave trembled violently as the structure destabilized.
Large chunks of rock fell from above.
Nyra grabbed David's arm, pulling him forward.
"You're losing too much blood."
"I'm fine," David muttered.
He wasn't.
His breathing had grown heavier, and his steps were slower than before. Blood soaked through the damaged sections of his armor, dripping onto the stone floor as they ran.
The ground shook again.
A massive crack split across the cave wall, sending fragments tumbling down behind them.
Lucian adjusted his grip on Castiel.
"Stay with us."
Castiel tried to respond, but his voice came out weak.
"I'm… here…"
June tightened his hold.
"Yeah, you better be."
The tunnel narrowed ahead, the ceiling lower as Mira guided them toward the exit. Faint light appeared in the distance — dim, but growing brighter as they pushed forward.
Behind them—
The cave collapsed further.
Stone thundered down, sealing portions of the tunnel behind them.
"Almost there!" Mira called.
They pushed harder.
Nyra kept pace beside David, her grip firm as she helped steady him.
"You still with me?" she asked quietly.
David nodded.
"Yeah."
System: Warning — Physical Condition Declining
David ignored it.
They reached the final stretch.
The tunnel widened.
Light flooded in.
Then—
They burst out of the cave entrance.
Cold air hit them immediately.
They stumbled forward onto uneven ground as the cave behind them continued collapsing. Stone fell from the entrance, sealing parts of it as dust billowed outward.
They moved further away as the entrance partially collapsed behind them.
Then—
Silence.
Only heavy breathing.
June carefully lowered Castiel to the ground.
Castiel's face was pale, his breathing shallow.
"...He's bad," June said quietly.
Lucian nodded.
"We stabilize him."
Nyra helped David sit against a nearby rock formation.
"You too," she said softly.
David exhaled slowly, finally allowing himself to rest.
Then—
His comm crackled.
Static.
Everyone froze.
Lucian looked down at his wrist.
