Chapter 24 - The First Fear

That night no one slept properly.

The truth they had learned stayed in their minds. It was not just about fighting monsters anymore. It was something bigger. Something older. And no one knew how it would end. The base felt different. The same walls. The same rooms. But now it felt heavy.

Jenny sat alone in the common area. She kept looking at her ring. For the first time she did not feel excited about it. "What if we are not enough?" she said quietly. Kevin was standing nearby. He heard her. He did not answer right away. Then he said, "We don't know that yet."

"That's the problem," Jenny replied. "We don't know anything." Kevin looked at her. "We didn't know anything before either. But we still fought." Jenny gave a small smile. "Yeah… but before it felt like we were winning."

Kevin had no answer this time. In another part of the base, Stebin was training alone. He kept hitting the same target again and again. Harder each time. Louis walked in and watched him for a moment. "You're going to break it," he said. Stebin stopped. "Good. Then I'll know I'm getting stronger." Louis shook his head. "Strength is not the problem." Stebin looked at him. "Then what is?"

Louis took a breath. "What if strength is not enough this time?" Stebin stayed quiet. That thought stayed with him. Zoe was sitting in silence in her usual place. Her eyes were closed. She was trying to focus. Trying to understand the energy she felt. But something was different. For the first time, her focus broke. She opened her eyes slowly. "Something is wrong," she whispered.

Meanwhile, Jake stood near the window. He looked outside at the dark sky. It felt like something was watching. Not close. But not far either. He clenched his fist slightly. "Come already," he muttered. "Stop hiding." Inside her room, Elisa stood alone. The letter was still on her table. She had read it many times. The words did not change. But the feeling did.

"I am coming."

She looked at her ring. It glowed faintly. Like it was reacting to something far away. Elisa closed her eyes. She tried to stay calm. But for the first time she felt fear Not for herself. For her team. She opened her eyes again. Her expression changed. The fear was still there. But something else was stronger. Determination. She walked out of her room. One by one, the others joined her in the main hall. No one called them. They just came.

They all felt it. Something was coming. And this time… it would not be easy. No jokes. No excitement. Only silence. Only truth. And for the first time since everything began. The guardians felt fear.
