The convenience shop was quiet again, the chaos from the previous day fading into the hum of ordinary business.
Jin Tae-Hyuk stood behind the counter, stacking items methodically. His senses were still tracing the remnants of Qi that had surged earlier. The city never truly rested, and neither did the hidden world within it.
Outside, a teenager leaned casually against the corner of the shop, watching.
He was average-looking at first glance: black hair slightly messy, school uniform partially untucked, hands stuffed into his pockets. But his eyes were anything but ordinary, they followed Tae-Hyuk's every movement, sharp and calculating.
Who is that…? Tae-Hyuk thought. He didn't immediately sense danger, but there was curiosity… and intelligence.
The boy shifted slightly as the door jingled and Seo-Yeon entered, carrying a small stack of receipts.
"Tae-Hyuk!" she called softly, drawing his attention.
He looked up, offering a faint nod.
"Seo-Yeon,"
The boy outside didn't move. Instead, he ducked behind a lamppost when he noticed Tae-Hyuk's eyes briefly flicker toward him. A faint energy trace had registered, invisible to normal humans but not to someone paying attention.
Interesting, he murmured to himself.
Meanwhile, Min-Jun's morning had begun differently.
"Come on, Min-Jun! You'll be late for school!" Seo-Yeon called from the doorway, half-laughing.
"Do I have to?!" Min-Jun whined, dragging his backpack over his shoulder.
"Yes! You need to get out of trouble before you make more."
Reluctantly, he left, muttering under his breath about delinquent fighters and unfair circumstances.
Back at the shop, Tae-Hyuk's focus returned to the shelves, but he sensed it: the feeling of martial artists observing him.
Not through brute force.
Just observation.
Somewhere in the city, a low-ranking Murim operative relayed information to their higher-ups.
A strange presence interfered with local fighters today. Stronger than expected. Unregistered and trying to stay hidden.
Orders came back almost immediately:
Do not confront. Observe. Approach wisely. Learn who he is before making any moves.
Meanwhile.
The boy from outside finally stepped forward, slipping into the store under the pretense of browsing snacks.
He watched Tae-Hyuk carefully, noting his posture, his calm precision in stacking items, even the way he moved without disturbing anything.
He's not ordinary, the boy thought. Not like any adult or shop worker I've ever seen.
He took a deep breath, approaching Tae-Hyuk cautiously.
"Um… excuse me," he said, voice low but clear. "I saw what happened outside the shop yesterday. You… you handled those guys… like it was nothing."
Tae-Hyuk's eyes flicked toward him, calm and unreadable.
"You should not have been there," Tae-Hyuk said simply.
"I… I wanted to see," the boy admitted, fidgeting slightly. "I—I want to learn."
Tae-Hyuk studied him silently. The boy was human, yes, but there was something strange about the boy.
He could be useful… or dangerous.
"Why do you want to learn," Tae-Hyuk said finally. "Somethings are better off not known."
The boy nodded eagerly.
"I understand. I just… I want to be around you. I want to see how you… do what you do."
Tae-Hyuk didn't answer immediately. Silence stretched.
Seo-Yeon, watching from the counter, tilted her head slightly.
There's something… different about him too, she thought. But she said nothing.
Later that afternoon, Tae-Hyuk slipped to the back of the shop, quietly practicing movements in the storage room.
Even in the cramped space, he adapted his techniques, moving silently and efficiently. Every step and breath of his Qi was measured. The city had taken away mountains, forests, and rocks but it had not taken away his skill.
And far above the streets, observers from modern Murim factions noted the surges of energy.
He is adapting quickly, one whispered. Stronger than anticipated.
Their investigation had begun, but Tae-Hyuk remained several steps ahead. For now, he was still hidden, still unknown.
The boy who had approached earlier lingered nearby, fascinated, careful not to disturb.
This will be interesting, Tae-Hyuk thought, silently.
Because the city was full of secrets, full of watchers, and full of fighters.
And Jin Tae-Hyuk was only beginning to understand who or what he had drawn to himself.
