The sun was low, casting long shadows across the quiet streets. The city hummed with life, but in the alley behind the convenience shop, the world felt different, slower, heavier, almost as if the urban jungle itself had shifted to accommodate Tae-Hyuk's presence.
Kim Hyun-Jae stood tensely, watching Tae-Hyuk move through the cramped space of the storage room. Each motion was precise: a punch, a kick, a shift of weight that seemed to bend gravity itself.
"Focus on your center," Tae-Hyuk said, voice calm and deliberate. "Feel the flow of your Qi, not just your muscles. The city will resist you if you cannot move with it. Concrete, glass, metal… every surface has its own rhythm. Learn it."
Hyun-Jae tried to mimic the stance, wobbling slightly as he pushed energy through his body.
"I… I can't feel it!" he exclaimed.
"You will," Tae-Hyuk replied simply. "Observation is useless without practice and strength alone is meaningless."
The boy inhaled sharply and tried again, this time sensing a little bit of energy under his skin, a pulse that corresponded to Tae-Hyuk's movements.
"You're improving," Tae-Hyuk noted. "Good. Remember, technique is not just offense. Defense, awareness, timing, they are one and the same."
Hyun-Jae's eyes widened as he finally managed a clean shift of weight and a small sense of Qi echoing Tae-Hyuk's demonstration.
Meanwhile, Seo-Yeon lingered nearby, arranging supplies on the shelves but unable to stop watching Tae-Hyuk.
He moved differently than anyone she had ever seen. The way he adjusted his stance, the almost imperceptible way his body reacted to imaginary attacks, it was mesmerizing. Her heart quickened as she noticed the calm confidence in his eyes.
Why does he seem… so untouchable? she thought, biting her lip. Her curiosity had grown into something deeper, something that made her chest tighten whenever he was near.
Hyun-Jae faltered on his stance again, and Tae-Hyuk's hand guided his arm gently. Seo-Yeon's silently sneaking glances at them, realizing the quiet bond forming, not just between master and student, but also a human connection she hadn't expected.
As the evening wore on, Tae-Hyuk paused, leaning against a shelf. His senses stretched outward, feeling the faint currents of Qi threading through the city like invisible streams.
The Demonic cult… he thought. They are here. Watching, waiting and controlling people from the shadows.
Far beyond the shop, corporate offices gleamed, private vehicles moved like chess pieces, and faint traces of energy pulsed in darkened alleyways. Influences that seemed mundane to ordinary eyes were actually the web of the Cult's reach, wealth, politics, underground organizations, all interwoven with power and secrecy.
Tae-Hyuk exhaled slowly, returning focus to Hyun-Jae.
"Control comes from awareness," he instructed. "Even when you cannot see them, even when the enemy is hidden, you must know their presence. Energy, intent, motion, everything leaves a mark. Learn to read it."
Hyun-Jae nodded, eyes wide, sweat forming at his brow.
"Yes, Master Tae-Hyuk," he said, voice determined.
Seo-Yeon stepped closer, voice quiet.
"Do… Do you really feel everything around you? Even things we can't see?"
Tae-Hyuk glanced at her, expression calm but edged with something she couldn't place.
"Not everything," he said. "But enough to survive and to protect those I care for."
Her breath caught at the words, their weight, their unspoken meaning. She looked away for a moment, heart thudding, the bond between them quietly deepening.
Moments later...
Tae-Hyuk's gaze shifted toward the shop entrance, his senses stretching outward.
"…Looks like today's lesson is over," he said quietly.
"We have visitors."
