Chapter 10 - The Test

Morning sunlight filtered through the classroom windows, illuminating rows of desks filled with students who barely noticed the world outside.

Kim Hyun-Jae sat quietly, his mind elsewhere. Lectures, and teachers voices could not capture his attention. Every tick of the clock, every sound, reminded him of what waited after school: Tae-Hyuk.

As soon as the final bell rang, he bolted from the school grounds, backpack slung over one shoulder, heart racing. His daily routine had become predictable yet thrilling: observe, analyze, learn.

The convenience shop appeared in the distance, plain and unassuming. Hyun-Jae paused outside for a moment, pretending to tie his shoelaces, before slipping inside. Tae-Hyuk was there, arranging items on the shelves, movements precise and effortless, Qi flowing through him with restrained strength.

"Hyun-Jae," Tae-Hyuk said without looking up, voice calm as always. "You are late."

"I… I had classes," the boy said, trying to sound casual, though his gaze never left Tae-Hyuk's every movement.

"You must learn discipline," Tae-Hyuk said, finally meeting his eyes. "Without discipline, it's impossible to achieve progress."

Hyun-Jae nodded eagerly. For hours, he watched Tae-Hyuk silently, noticing how he moved—peaceful, gracefully, the energy that flows through every stance, the balanced offense and defense.

Meanwhile, Min-Jun had returned from school, dragging his feet as usual.

"You're back," Seo-Yeon said, relief softening her voice. "Did school go okay?"

"I survived," he muttered

Hyun-Jae glanced at the scene but didn't interrupt. He was too focused on the movements of Tae-Hyuk.

Evening fell, and the city streets began to glow with neon lights. Tae-Hyuk had just finished tidying the shop when a sudden, unnatural chill swept through the air.

His senses sharpened instantly.

Qi, powerful, controlled, and deliberate was approaching.

Hyun-Jae's eyes widened, finally noticing the shift.

"Someone's coming," Tae-Hyuk muttered.

Before anyone could react, the front door burst open. Two men, clad in black, moved with deadly precision. Seo-Yeon screamed as they grabbed her, dragging her toward the shadows outside.

"Seo-Yeon!" Min-Jun shouted, charging, but Tae-Hyuk stopped him with a calm hand on his shoulder.

"Do not follow recklessly," Tae-Hyuk said, voice firm. "This is a test. Watch carefully, Hyun-Jae."

Hyun-Jae froze, understanding for the first time the real stakes of the world he had stepped into.

Tae-Hyuk sprinted after them, the city streets bending around his speed. He didn't attack immediately. Observation was key, he needed to understand the strength of those testing him.

The men carried Seo-Yeon into a narrow alley. She struggled but didn't panic, her eyes wide as she caught sight of Tae-Hyuk closing the distance with silent precision.

"Are you okay?" he asked softly, reaching her side.

"I… I'm fine," she stammered, though relief shone in her eyes. Her hand brushed against his for a moment, Her heartbeat was rapid, yet steady under pressure.

Tae-Hyuk's movements became fluid and controlled, every strike calculated, every block was a dance of Qi. The two assailants were skilled but inexperienced against someone of Tae-Hyuk's caliber. Within moments, Seo-Yeon was safe, and the attackers lay incapacitated, unconscious but unharmed.

Hyun-Jae watched from a distance, his admiration growing.

"He's… unstoppable," the boy whispered.

Seo-Yeon, still catching her breath, turned to Tae-Hyuk.

"Thank you… I thought… I thought I'd never get away."

"It's okay.." Tae-Hyuk said, helping her steady herself.

Her eyes lingered on him longer than necessary, a mixture of fear, gratitude, and something else was quietly brewing up between them.

"Who are they?" She asked but almost like she was questioning herself.

Tae-Hyuk did not respond, keeping his secret and focus intact.

Later, back at the shop, Hyun-Jae approached Tae-Hyuk hesitantly.

"You said they were testing you" Hyun-jae asked

Tae-Hyuk nodded slowly.

"Yes, it was a test." After a brief pause before he continued "The murim alliance always monitor all those that are unaffiliated closely. They will continue to evaluate your abilities until they decide if you are friend or enemy."

Hyun-Jae shivered slightly.

"But.... Why take her?"

Tae-Hyuk's expression darkened.

"The best way to know someone's true ability is by going after those around them."

Hyun-Jae's eyes widened.

"Isn't that wrong?"

Tae-Hyuk's lips curved slightly.

"Yes," he said. "But because some things are wrong, doesn't mean people won't do them, especially those in power, that's why you must always be prepared."

Inside the shop, Hyun-Jae continued to watch, Seo-Yeon recovered yet still close, and Tae-Hyuk remained calm—ever the anchor in a storm of unseen battles.
