Chapter 16 - Clash of Masters

The courtyard of the Wudang compound was filled with tension. Disciples lined the edges, breaths caught, eyes wide, as Tae-Hyuk and Master Li Shan faced one another. The elder's sharp gaze glinted in the late afternoon sun, every muscle coiled like a spring, every movement a promise of overwhelming force.

"You flaunt your skill, stranger. Let us see if it is worth my attention!" Li Shan's voice rang, commanding the air.

Tae-Hyuk's expression remained calm, almost serene. His Qi flowed visibly around him, arcs of energy tracing every subtle movement. Each step left glowing trails, as if the courtyard itself had become a stage for his mastery of shaping Qi.

Li Shan's eyes narrowed, sensing the energy from Tae-hyuk. Manifestation Realm?… I can see his Qi taking form… yet at this Realm, he cannot possibly overwhelm me....

With a swift motion, Li Shan struck first, executing Taiji Fist. The strike curved elegantly, redirecting Tae-Hyuk's approach while unleashing waves of internal force. The disciples gasped, witnessing the sheer precision of a master at the Fusion Realm. Tae-Hyuk responded instantly, his improvised movements allowing him to glide across the courtyard stones, bending with the force of the blow while arcs of shaped Qi left trails in his wake.

Li Shan followed with Flowing Water Step, weaving across the courtyard like a living river of motion. His feet barely touched the ground, his body twisting and flowing, redirecting energy with minimal effort. Every disciple recognized the signature elegance of Wudang martial arts—softness overcoming hard force—but none could comprehend the sheer speed.

Tae-Hyuk's eyes narrowed. He didn't need brute strength—he needed precision. Using the principles of Manifestation Realm, he shaped his Qi into faint, visible streams that allowed him to anticipate the redirection and find openings in the master's flow.

Li Shan's third move, Yin-Yang Reversal, turned a previously harmless strike into a sweeping attempt to destabilize Tae-Hyuk. The courtyard seemed to vibrate under the force, the air shimmering with coiled energy. Tae-Hyuk twisted instinctively, redirecting the strike with a combination of subtle Qi flows and his own body control.

The disciples gasped, whispering among themselves. "He's actually… standing his ground against master." one muttered, disbelief plain in his voice.

Li Shan's eyes flickered with astonishment. Impossible… a lower realm martial artist… redirecting my strikes… anticipating my movements…

Tae-Hyuk pressed the advantage carefully, not striking recklessly, but letting the energy of Li Shan's attacks weave into his own flow. With a series of gentle shifts, arcs of shaped Qi formed barriers and trails around his body. Each strike and counter left visible traces of energy that highlighted the impossibility of what was happening.

Li Shan unleashed another flurry of Taiji Fist sequences, combining flowing sweeps with redirection and internal force. Tae-Hyuk reacted with calculated evasions, his Qi gently guiding his body away from the brunt of the blows. Sparks of colliding energy danced in the air, leaving glowing afterimages of the clash that stunned even the most seasoned disciples.

Despite being a master in the Fusion Realm, Li Shan's eyes widened. This should not be happening… Manifestation Realm… he should not… yet he is… reading… controlling the fight…

Another strike came—a Flowing Water Step combined with Taiji Fist, designed to crush any ordinary opponent. Tae-Hyuk twisted, letting the energy flow past him harmlessly while a faint pulse of shaped Qi followed the path of the redirected force. He seized the moment, a precise push of energy executed a counter that forced Li Shan slightly off balance.

A collective gasp echoed through the courtyard. Tae-Hyuk, the lower realm martial artist, had created a momentary advantage over the master. Even the wind seemed to pause, dust and energy shimmering like glittering threads in the air.

Li Shan's chest heaved. Shock and disbelief warred with pride. "You… you are stronger than I anticipated," he said, voice tight. "At your realm, this should be impossible… yet your precision, your shaping of Qi… it is extraordinary."

Tae-Hyuk inclined his head slightly, his calm unwavering. "I have trained to adapt. Flow, form, energy… these are tools, not limitations."

The disciples whispered among themselves, eyes wide. A Manifestation Realm practitioner had outmaneuvered and even overpowered, a master at the Fusion Realm. It was a lesson they would never forget: skill, perception, and shaping energy could surpass raw power when wielded with mastery.

Li Shan's sharp gaze softened, though a trace of shock lingered. "Your skill… your understanding of Qi… it is beyond your realm. But do not let this arrogance blind you. There is still much to learn, and the higher you rise, the wider the gap becomes."

Tae-Hyuk bowed subtly. "I understand. Today, I have learned more from you than any victory can show."

The courtyard settled into silence. The disciples absorbed the lesson, realizing that the Murim world was far larger and stranger than they had imagined. And Tae-Hyuk, standing quietly amid arcs of dissipating energy, had demonstrated the impossible, leaving even a master at the Fusion Realm visibly shaken and reconsidering the limits of power.

Li Shan exhaled slowly, regaining composure, his eyes reflecting respect and a new understanding. "Perhaps… there is more to this young man than I first believed."

Tae-Hyuk's gaze swept the courtyard, calm, collected. The impossible had been achieved—not by overwhelming force, but by vision, adaptation, and mastery of Qi's manifest form.

After a brief moment of silence, Li Shan's sharp eyes softened with curiosity, "Come, let's talk in the hall, I would like to know more about you" he said, gesturing towards the Wudang hall.

The private hall of Wudang was quiet, lit by the soft glow of lanterns. Tae-Hyuk and Master Li Shan faced each other, the weight of martial mastery filling the space.

Li Shan's gaze sharpened. "You move with skill beyond most disciples. Tell me, Jin Tae-Hyuk, are you affiliated with any sect?"

"No," Tae-Hyuk replied evenly. "I train independently, I have no master and I'm not related to any sect."

Li Shan's brow arched. "Independent… yet your Qi is refined, controlled and strong, I honestly find it hard to believe that you're still in the Manifestation realm.

Tae-Hyuk inclined his head slightly. "It's not really about your cultivation stage. I took my time in understanding the foundation my cultivating techniques."

Li Shan's eyes widened for the briefest moment. "Impressive, very impressive. Many of martial artists nowadays don't have a good foundation, but you having no master is even more impressive."

Li Shan leaned back, steepling his fingers. "Then you've built your foundation alone… studied the forms, the flow, the essence of Qi without guidance. That is… rare. I must admit, I am curious how you achieved this."

Tae-Hyuk's gaze remained calm, "I study principles, not just techniques. Technique without understanding is hollow. Energy without control is dangerous, even to yourself."

Li Shan's eyes narrowed. "I see… you are knowledgeable, disciplined, and yet bold... bold enough to move without a sect's protection. Very well, then… tell me, how much do you know about the politics and the hidden powers of the world"

"I know enough to survive and act where necessary," Tae-Hyuk said. "The Demonic cult is still active and their influence stretches into many organizations, my goal is to understand the balance of power… and to act accordingly."

Li Shan studied him for a long moment. "Few speak so openly about the cult's reach, especially someone unknown. Most people would hesitate, but you… you are either extremely confident or you are just reckless."

"Perhaps both," Tae-Hyuk said calmly. "But I do not act without reason. Knowledge and observation are as important as cultivation. The unseen threats are only dangerous to those who ignore them."

Li Shan exhaled slowly, the faint glow of his own Qi pulsing around him. "I see that you grasp more than just the techniques. Your independence is… admirable. But raw skill alone will not shield you from the Murim's shadows."

Tae-Hyuk inclined his head slightly, expression unreadable. "I do not intend to hide my skill. I intend to use it wisely, when the need arises. That is all that matters."

Li Shan leaned forward, voice dropping to a more serious tone. "Not all enemies are obvious many are hidden, waiting for the right moment to strike. Even those at higher realms can be caught unaware if they misjudge the situation."

Tae-Hyuk's gaze was steady. "I have faced impossible odds before. I will adapt, as always. Knowledge and perception guide me as much as power does."

Li Shan studied him in silence for a long moment, as if weighing whether Tae-Hyuk's words were sincere or merely polished confidence. Finally, he leaned back, voice calm but firm. "Good. You have the potential to move far, when the time is right I'll introduce you to other masters you can trust, but remember, you must be cautious."

"Okay," Tae-Hyuk replied. "I will not act blindly. I will only act when it's necessary."

Li Shan's expression softened slightly, almost approvingly. "Then I will send my disciples to meet with you when the time is right. Even someone as talented as you cannot face the unseen alone forever."

"I will accept guidance if it aids understanding," Tae-Hyuk said.

Li Shan's eyes gleamed. "Many would seek protection, but you rely on your skill and observation. I respect that." Li Shan nodded slowly, "Fine, that is enough for now."

As Tae-Hyuk stepped out of the hall, his senses brushed against a presence above—silent, watchful and perched on the rooftop like a shadow. He paused for a moment, but made no move.

Without a word, he continued walking.

Left alone in the hall, Li Shan's gaze drifted upward, his voice low and measured. "Were you noticed?"

A reply came from somewhere unseen. "I don't believe so. What should we do about him?"

Li Shan's expression hardened, his eyes narrowing.

"Prepare the assassins."

A brief silence followed.

"Eliminate him."
