Chapter 3 - Bride of the Shadow King

🌑 Chapter 3: The Shadows That Hunger

Liora woke to silence.

Not the peaceful silence of early morning…

But the unsettling kind that made her chest tighten.

For a moment, she forgot where she was.

Her eyes slowly opened.

Dark ceiling.

Blue flames flickering softly.

Cold air brushing her skin.

Then it hit her.

The castle.

The Shadow King.

This was real.

She sat up slowly, hugging her arms around herself. The bed was soft, but the air felt colder than before.

"Is it… morning?" she whispered.

But there was no sunlight.

No birds.

No sound of life.

Only darkness.

She walked toward the tall window and gently pulled the curtain aside.

Her breath caught.

Outside… the sky was completely black.

No sun.

No dawn.

Only a pale silver moon hanging in the distance.

"It's always night…" she murmured.

A strange sadness filled her chest.

How lonely must it be… living in eternal darkness?

Her stomach suddenly growled softly.

She blinked.

Right…

She hadn't eaten since yesterday.

"Is there even food here…?" she whispered nervously.

Just as she turned—

A tray appeared on the table.

She froze.

"I—"

She hadn't heard anyone enter.

The tray held simple food—bread, fruit, and a warm drink.

Her eyes softened slightly.

He prepared this…?

Without thinking, she looked around.

"Are you here?" she asked quietly.

No reply.

Only silence.

But somehow… she felt like she wasn't completely alone.

After eating, Liora decided to explore her room.

It was large and beautifully decorated, yet something about it felt… empty.

She walked slowly toward the door.

His warning echoed in her mind.

"You will not survive."

She hesitated.

Maybe… just a little…

She gently opened the door.

The corridor stretched before her, dark and quiet.

Her heart began to beat faster.

"I'll just look around… a little."

She stepped out.

The hallway felt colder than before.

Blue flames flickered softly, casting long shadows along the walls.

Her footsteps echoed lightly.

She walked slowly, curiosity pulling her forward.

Everything felt ancient.

Mysterious.

As if the castle held countless secrets.

Then—

She heard something.

A faint whisper.

Liora stopped.

"Hello…?"

No reply.

She took another step.

The whisper grew louder.

Soft.

Distorted.

"Lio…ra…"

Her heart skipped.

Someone called her name.

"Who's there?" she asked, fear creeping into her voice.

The shadows along the wall suddenly shifted.

Her breath caught.

They weren't moving normally.

They were… crawling.

Toward her.

Her heartbeat sped up.

"Stop…"

The shadows twisted, stretching like dark hands reaching for her.

Her instincts screamed.

Run.

She turned and hurried back—

But the corridor had changed.

The path behind her… disappeared.

Her eyes widened.

"W-what…?"

The shadows rose from the floor, forming shapes.

Dark figures.

Tall.

Distorted.

Hungry.

Her body trembled.

"No…"

The shadows moved closer.

She backed away slowly.

Her breath quickened.

Her heart pounded.

"I shouldn't have left the room…"

One shadow lunged.

She gasped, stumbling backward.

Cold darkness brushed her arm.

Pain shot through her body.

"Aah—!"

She fell to the floor.

The shadows circled her.

Closing in.

She tried to stand, but her legs shook violently.

Fear finally took over.

"I'm going to die…"

The shadows reached for her—

Then—

A powerful force exploded through the corridor.

Darkness shattered.

The shadows recoiled violently.

A familiar presence filled the air.

Cold.

Dominating.

Terrifying.

The Shadow King.

He stood at the end of the corridor, eyes glowing intensely.

The shadows trembled.

As if fearing him.

"I warned you."

His voice echoed, calm yet dangerous.

The shadows lunged again—

His eyes flashed.

The shadows disintegrated instantly.

Like smoke blown away by wind.

Silence fell.

Liora stared at him, breathless.

He walked toward her slowly.

Each step heavy.

Each step terrifying.

He stopped in front of her.

"You disobeyed me."

His voice was cold.

Liora lowered her head.

"I'm sorry…"

She expected anger.

Punishment.

But instead—

He knelt slightly.

Her eyes widened.

He gently lifted her arm.

Where the shadow touched her skin, a dark mark spread slowly.

His gaze darkened.

"The shadows touched you."

"I didn't mean—"

"You are not strong enough to survive them."

His hand moved.

Dark energy surrounded her arm.

The pain faded slowly.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"You're… helping me?"

He didn't reply.

But the darkness around her wound disappeared.

Her arm returned to normal.

Liora looked at him quietly.

"Thank you…"

For a moment—

He froze.

As if unfamiliar with the words.

Then he stood up.

"You must not leave your room again."

She nodded softly.

But then—

"Why did they attack me?"

Silence.

His expression darkened slightly.

"Because they are drawn to light."

"Light?"

He looked at her.

"You carry something… different."

Her heart skipped.

"What do you mean?"

Before he could answer—

A faint glow appeared on her hand.

She gasped.

Soft golden light flickered briefly… then vanished.

Both of them froze.

The Shadow King's eyes widened slightly.

"Impossible…"

"What… what was that?" she whispered.

He stared at her silently.

Then—

"You truly don't know…"

Her heart pounded.

"Know what?"

His gaze softened… just slightly.

"You may be more dangerous… than you realize."

A chill ran down her spine.

Dangerous?

Me?

Before she could ask more—

He stepped closer.

Without warning—

He lifted her gently.

Her eyes widened.

"W-what are you doing?"

"You cannot walk back."

His voice remained calm.

Her heart began racing.

She was in his arms.

Close enough to hear his breathing.

Close enough to feel his cold aura.

But strangely…

She didn't feel afraid.

Instead…

She felt safe.

The realization startled her.

He carried her back silently.

The castle felt quieter now.

More peaceful.

He reached her room and placed her gently on the bed.

"You will remain here."

She nodded softly.

But before he left—

"Why did you come… to save me?"

He stopped.

Silence.

Then—

"Because you are mine."

Her heart skipped.

The words echoed in her chest.

Not harsh.

Not cruel.

Just… certain.

He turned.

And disappeared again.

Liora sat quietly.

Her heart still racing.

She looked at her hand.

Light…

Dangerous…

What am I…?

Outside the room—

The Shadow King stood in darkness.

His expression unreadable.

"Light magic…"

The shadows around him trembled.

Light… the only power capable of breaking his curse.

He closed his eyes slowly.

"Liora…"

For the first time—

Hope flickered in the land of shadows.
