Chapter 17 - The Girl Who No Longer Herself

The light didn't fade. It pressed. Against their skin. Into their bones. Inside their minds. And that voice stop fighting. It wasn't just sound. It was command. Kael couldn't move. Noah or whatever was inside him, went completely still. Even the figure from the sky. Paused. Like everything in existence had to listen.

The light slowly began to take shape. Not a body. Not fully. A silhouette. Floating. Shifting. And then eyes. Familiar. But wrong. Too bright. Too empty. Kael's breath trembled. Elara. The thing looked at him. And for a second, just one second, something flickered. Recognition. Then gone. That name no longer defines me, she said. Her voice layered. Multiple. Like echoes of every version of her speaking at once.

No, Kael stepped forward. You don't get to say that. The air around him cracked slightly. The girl who chose us. The answer came instantly. She chose destruction. That hit. Hard. No, Kael whispered. She chose to save us, he said. A long pause. Then incorrect.

The space around them shifted and suddenly they weren't in the forest anymore. They were inside a memory.

Elara stood in the white void. Crying. Shaking. Broken. I can't choose, she whispered. The voices around her, cold. Watching. You already did. Noah, on the ground. Dying. Kael bleeding. Reaching for her. Please, Kael whispered. Her hands trembled. I will fix it, she said. And then, she didn't choose either. She erased everything.

Kael staggered. You didn't save us. The entity's voice softened, but not kindly. You delayed the outcome.

A laugh echoed. Wrong. They all turned. Noah. Standing. Smiling. But his eyes gone. I told you, he said calmly. He's not here. Kael's voice dropped. Give him back. The thing inside Noah tilted its head. Why? A step closer. He always chose himself.

Kael froze. What? The entity smiled. Every cycle. Flash. Noah, whispering to the watchers. If she chooses me, we stabilize the system. Another Flash. Noah looking at Elara. Smiling. Knowing what would happen. Back to now. Kael's world shattered. You used her. Noah's body didn't react. But something deep inside him. Moved.

Elara, his real voice. Faint. Dying. Don't listen, the entity forced control again. Pathetic.

Kael snapped. Completely. He moved faster than ever before. Not controlled. Not careful. Pure rage. He slammed into Noah throwing him back. Get out of him! He roared. The entity laughed. You can't separate what's already merged.

The Elara entity raised her hand. Everything froze again. Enough. Silence. Her gaze moved between them. And for the first time there was something human. Pain.

I remember now, she said softly. Both of them froze. I remember loving you. Kael's heart stopped. I remember choosing you. Noah's body went still. And I remember, a pause. Her voice broke. Why I had to stop?

She looked at Kael. If I come back fully. Her eyes dimmed slightly. You will die first. Silence. Then she looked at Noah. And if I don't, his body cracked again. He will destroy everything.

Elara closed her eyes. I can not be both. The world trembled. I must become one. Kael stepped forward, then choose me. Noah's voice, weak, breaking. Don't leave me again. Silence. And Elara hesitated. For the first time, since becoming more, she hesitated.
