Chapter 23 - The core That Learned To Scream

The sky wasn't stable. It pretended to be. That was the lie. Kael could feel it now. Not with his eyes. But somewhere deeper. Like the world had a pulse. And that pulse was Breaking. Noah, he whispered. The wind didn't answer. But something else did. A vibration beneath his feet. Like the ground itself was reacting to that name.

You are going to kill him. Elara appeared beside him, flickering. Unstable. Not fully present. Not fully gone. Kael didn't look at her. I'm going to save him. Silence. You don't even know where he is, she said. I know what he is. A pause. And that's enough.

Elara closed her eyes. For a second the world froze. Then it shifted. The ground beneath them cracked, revealing something underneath. Not dirt. Not stone. Light. Flowing. Alive. That's the structure, she whispered. Kael looked down. The system? No, she said. What replaced it.

The ground gave way. They fell. Not down. Through. Reality peeled apart like layers of glass. And each layer. Showed a different world. Different lives. Different choices. Different versions of them.

Kael saw: A world where Elara chose him and Noah died screaming. A world where she chose Noah and Kael never existed. A world where she chose neither and everything burned. How many, he whispered. Elara's voice broke: all of them.

They landed. Hard. In a space that didn't make sense. No sky. No ground.

Just a massive sphere of light, floating. Cracked. Pulsing. Screaming.

Kael. The voice came from everywhere. Distorted. Breaking. You shouldn't be here. Kael stepped forward. I'm not leaving you. The sphere reacted violently. Light spiked outward throwing him back.

I can't stop it! Noah's voice echoed. The cracks deepened. I'm trying a pulse. Violent. I'm trying. The world shook.

Elara stepped forward slowly. He's not just holding the world together. A pause. He is the world. Silence. Kael's breath stopped. Then we separate them. Elara's eyes filled with something close to fear. If we do that everything ends.

So we do nothing? Kael snapped. No, she said. A pause. We choose what survives. That word again. Choice. Always Choice. The sphere cracked wider and something came out. Not Noah. Not fully. A form made of broken light. Shifting. Unstable. And angry. It attacked. Fast. Violent. Kael barely blocked. This isn't him! Elara shook her head. It's what's left of him. That hurt more than any hit.

Kael didn't dodge the next attack. He let it hit him. Hard. And grabbed it. Noah, listen to me! The thing froze. For a second, a flicker. Kael?

I'm here, Kael said. Don't let this take you. Silence. Then, screaming. I can't! The core shattered further.

Elara stepped forward. Her eyes glowing. Resolved. I know what to do. Kael turned. What? A pause. I merge with him. Silence. No. Immediate. Violent.

If I do this, she said softly, I can stabilize everything. A pause. But I won't be me anymore. Kael's heart broke. I just got you back. She smiled faintly. You never really lost me.

The core screamed. The world shook. Time fractured. Elara, Noah whispered weakly. Don't, she closed her eyes. And stepped forward. Light consumed her and the world held its breath again.
