Chapter 18 - The Choice That Splits The Soul

The world was Breaking again. Not outside. Inside her. Elara stood between them, but for the first time she felt herself splitting. Not metaphorically. Not emotionally. Physically. Existentially. Two forces pulling her apart. Light, warm. Human. And darkness, cold. Absolute. You can not remain both, the voice echoed. Her body trembled. I know she whispered. Kael stepped forward. Slow. Careful. Like approaching something fragile. Elara, he said softly. Her eyes flickered, for a second, they were hers again. Stay, he whispered. Silence. I don't care what you have become. A step closer. Just don't leave again. Something inside her cracked.

No, the voice cut through everything. Noah or what was left of him. You don't get to make that choice again. His body twitched. Cracks of darkness spreading across his skin. Every time he said, I lose you.

His voice broke. But this time his eyes darkened completely. I won't. The air exploded. Power surged out of Elara, splitting. Literally splitting. Light tore from her left side, darkness from her right. A scream ripped from her throat. And then, Silence.

Two figures stood where one had been. One soft. Breathing. Crying. Human. The other still. Cold. Watching. Power. Kael's breath caught. No way. Noah smiled. Finally.

The darker Elara stepped forward. And pointed at Kael. He dies first. Silence. And the human Elara screamed: Run!

The world didn't shatter. It held its breath. Like even reality itself wasn't ready for what had just happened. Two Elara. Standing in the same space. One trembling. One perfectly still. And between them, everything that ever existed.

Kael didn't move. He couldn't. His eyes were locked on her, on both of her. This isn't real he whispered. But it was. He could feel it. The difference. The human one warm. Fragile. Breaking. The other cold. Infinite. Watching. Like a god deciding whether the world deserved to exist.

The darker Elara stepped forward. Every step the ground beneath her slightly cracked. Reality adjusting to her presence. You were always the variable, she said, her voice echoing unnaturally. Kael's jaw tightened. I'm not afraid of you. A pause. Then a faint smile. You should be.
