Chapter 17:
The void did not erupt.
It answered...Slowly...Deliberately.
Like something that had been waiting… not for an opportunity—
But for permission.
The darkness at the edge of the system folded inward, then stretched outward again, forming depth where none should exist.
The ripple expanded into a silent wave, distorting even the faint structure that remained nearby.
Kaizen stepped forward, blade rising instinctively.
"…This feels different."
The goblin didn't hesitate."…Not system."
Aeris's voice followed, quieter than before.
"…Not them either."
That was worse...Much worse.
The surface of the void trembled—Then broke...Not violently....Not explosively.
But like something passing through a boundary that no longer resisted it.
At first—Nothing was visible...Only a silhouette...Tall...Vast...Undefined.
Then—It stepped out...And the moment it did—Everything changed.
The system recoiled....Not metaphorically...Physically.
The distant grids warped and pulled away, as if space itself was retreating from what had emerged.
Kaizen's breath caught.
"…Okay…"
A pause.
"…That's new."
The entity stood before them...Not humanoid...Not entirely.
Its form shifted slowly, like it was deciding what shape to hold. Darkness wrapped around it, not as absence—but as substance. Within it, faint glimmers of something ancient flickered like distant stars trapped beneath a surface that refused to reveal itself.
Aeris took a step back.
For the first time—She looked small.
"…It shouldn't be able to exist here," she whispered.
The goblin stepped forward....Of course it did.
"…More."
Kaizen didn't stop it this time.
But he didn't relax either.
"…Careful."
The entity moved....Not toward them....Around them....Its presence didn't push or pull....It redefined.
The space it occupied became something else entirely—detached from the system, detached from the rules they had learned to fight within.
Kaizen felt it instantly.
His Vein Energy—Didn't respond...Not suppressed...Not blocked....Ignored.
"…I don't like this," he muttered.
The entity stopped....And then—It spoke....Not with sound....Not with vibration.
But directly—Into them.
"…You are not part of the design."
Kaizen's eyes narrowed.
"…Neither are you."
A pause.
The entity tilted—its form bending slightly as if acknowledging the response.
"…Correct."
The goblin spoke.
Calm....Certain...."…More."
The entity's attention shifted.
Focused entirely on it.
"…You are closer."
Aeris stepped forward despite herself.
"…Closer to what?"
The entity responded—Without hesitation."…To becoming."
Silence....Heavy....Unsettling.
Kaizen exhaled slowly.
"…That's vague."
The entity turned toward him.
"…You resist definition."
Kaizen smirked faintly.
"…Yeah, I get that a lot."
A pause.
Then—"…That is why you are still separate."
The goblin stepped forward again.
"…Not separate."
The entity observed it.
"…Not yet."
The air shifted....Subtle....But undeniable.
Aeris felt it first.
"…It's not attacking…"
Kaizen nodded slightly.
"…It's talking."
"…No," she said quietly.
"…It's deciding."
That word settled deep.
The entity moved again.
Closer now...Not fast....Not slow....Unavoidable....It stopped just a few steps away from the goblin.
Their presence—Clashed....Not violently....But fundamentally.
Two things that should not coexist in the same state.
"…You have no end."
The goblin tilted its head.
"…More."
A pause.
Then—For the first time—The entity's form stabilized...Just slightly.
As if something about that answer—Resonated.
"…Then you are dangerous."
Kaizen stepped forward.
"…So are you."
The entity turned....Its presence brushing against him—And for a moment—
Everything disappeared....No system....No void...No goblin...No Aeris.
Just—Awareness....Pure....Unfiltered.
He saw something—Not clearly....Not fully. ..But enough.
Layers beyond layers....Structures beyond systems....And something watching from even beyond that.
Then—It was gone....Kaizen staggered slightly.
"…What the hell was that…"
Aeris caught his arm instinctively.
"…What did you see?"
He shook his head slowly.
"…I don't think I was supposed to."
Her grip tightened slightly.
Not controlling....Steadying.
"…You're still here," she said quietly.
Kaizen glanced at her.
"…Yeah."
A pause.
"…I am."
The entity observed them both.
"…Connection."
Aeris froze.
"…It can see that?"
The goblin spoke.
"…Everything."
The entity shifted again.
Its attention now divided.
Between all three of them.
"…You are unstable together."
Kaizen smirked faintly.
"…That's kind of the point."
Aeris didn't smile.
"…No," she said quietly.
"…That's the problem."
The entity raised something like a limb—Not formed...Not fixed....But present.
"…Instability creates possibility."
A pause.
"…But also collapse."
The goblin stepped forward again....Closer than before.
"…Test."
The entity didn't move.
"…Already in progress."
And then—It acted....Not an attack....Not a strike...A shift.
Reality bent....Not like the system....Not like the figure before...This was deeper....
More absolute...The space around them split into layers—Each one slightly different.
Slightly altered.
Multiple versions of the same moment.
Kaizen felt it instantly.
"…It's splitting outcomes…"
Aeris's voice tightened.
"…It's forcing possibilities to exist at once."
The goblin moved.
Through them....Not confused....Not slowed....Choosing.
Each step collapsing one possibility into another.
The entity observed.
"…You navigate."
The goblin didn't answer.
Kaizen moved next....Harder....Slower.
Each step felt wrong—like choosing one path erased another.
"…This is insane…"
Aeris followed.
But unlike them—She hesitated....For the first time.
Because she could see it....All of it....Too many paths....Too many outcomes.
"…I can't—"
Kaizen grabbed her wrist.
Firm....Grounding.
"…Don't think."
She looked at him.
"…What?"
"…Just move."
A pause.
Then—She did....And it worked....The layers collapsed around them....One by one.
Until—Only one remained....Reality snapped back....The entity stood still....Observing.
"…Interesting."
The goblin stepped forward.
"…More."
Kaizen exhaled.
"…You're really going to push this thing, aren't you?"
"…Yes."
Aeris looked between them.
Then at the entity.
"…It's not testing strength…"
A pause.
"…It's testing direction."
The entity responded.
"…Correct."
Kaizen frowned.
"…Direction toward what?"
Silence.
Then—"…Beyond."
That word—
Felt heavier than anything before.
The void behind the entity shifted again....Deeper....Wider....Calling.
The entity turned slightly.
"…You may proceed."
Kaizen blinked.
"…That's it?"
"…For now."
A pause.
"…You are not ready."
The goblin stepped forward.
"…More."
The entity responded immediately.
"…Soon."
Aeris stepped beside Kaizen.
Closer again....Not by accident.
"…We keep moving," she said softly.
He nodded.
"…Yeah."
A brief silence.
Then he added—
"…Together."
She didn't respond.
But she didn't move away either.
The goblin was already walking.
Of course it was.
Kaizen followed.
Aeris beside him.
And behind them—The entity watched....Not as an enemy....Not as an ally.
But as something far beyond either.
..
If this entity is not testing their strength but rather their "direction"—
then where does this path lead them… and can what awaits them "beyond" even be comprehended?
