Chapter 13 - CHAPTER 13 — What Did You Do?

The car ride was silent.

Not calm.

Not peaceful.

Heavy.

Elena sat beside him.

Hands tight in her lap.

Her mind replayed everything.

The man.

His words.

"You have no idea what he's done."

She turned.

Looked at Adrian.

"You're going to tell me."

A pause.

"No."

Her jaw tightened.

"Stop doing that."

"Doing what?"

"Deciding what I need to know."

Silence.

His gaze stayed forward.

"That's exactly what I'm doing."

Her chest tightened.

"I almost got attacked."

"You didn't."

"That's not the point."

A pause.

Then—

"It is."

Her hands clenched.

"No," she said.

"It's not."

The car stopped.

His building.

Again.

But this time…

It didn't feel like protection.

It felt like a cage.

They stepped out.

No words.

No pause.

Straight inside.

The door closed behind them.

And Elena turned immediately.

"What did he mean?"

Silence.

Adrian walked past her.

Removed his jacket.

Like nothing had happened.

That made it worse.

"Adrian."

He stopped.

But didn't turn.

"What did he mean?" she repeated.

A long pause.

Then—

"Nothing that concerns you."

Her chest tightened.

"That's a lie."

Silence.

She stepped closer.

"I'm already involved."

No response.

"I was followed."

Still nothing.

"I was threatened."

A pause.

Then—

"You're safe now."

That snapped something.

"I don't care about safe," she said sharply.

"I care about the truth."

Silence.

Finally—

He turned.

Slowly.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

"You want the truth?"

Her voice didn't shake.

"Yes."

A pause.

Long.

Then—

"I ruin people."

Silence.

Her breath caught.

"What?"

"I destroy anyone who becomes a problem."

His voice didn't change.

No emotion.

Just fact.

"That's not normal."

"No."

Her heart started beating faster.

"That man…"

A pause.

"…lost everything because of you?"

Silence.

Then—

"Yes."

Her stomach dropped.

"Why?"

Another pause.

"He made a mistake."

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

Her chest tightened.

"That's what you do?"

A pause.

"You remove people?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Everything felt different now.

He wasn't just controlling.

He was dangerous.

Real.

Elena stepped back.

Just slightly.

"I didn't know I was signing up for this."

"You didn't."

That honesty again.

"But you still signed."

Her jaw tightened.

"That doesn't mean I accept it."

A pause.

Then—

"You don't have to accept it."

Her breath caught.

"You just have to stay."

That felt worse.

Silence filled the room.

Then—

She spoke again.

Quieter now.

"Am I next?"

That made him stop.

Really stop.

For the first time—

His expression changed.

Not control.

Not calculation.

Something else.

"No."

That came fast.

Too fast.

"You're sure?" she asked.

"Yes."

Silence.

"Why?" she whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"Because I won't let anything happen to you."

Her heart skipped.

That wasn't control.

That was something else.

"You say that like you can stop everything," she said.

A beat.

Then—

"I can stop enough."

She stared at him.

Trying to understand.

Trying to decide.

If he was the danger…

Or the only thing standing between her and it.

"Then tell me this," she said.

"If I walk away right now…"

A pause.

"What happens?"

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

Then—

"They'll follow you."

Her breath caught.

"And you won't survive it."

Silence.

That wasn't a threat.

That was truth.

Her chest tightened.

"You should have told me," she said.

"I'm telling you now."

Too late.

She turned away.

Walked toward the window.

Needed space.

Needed air.

"This isn't a contract anymore," she said quietly.

A pause behind her.

"No."

She closed her eyes.

"What is it then?"

Silence.

Then—

His voice.

Lower.

Closer.

"It's something you can't walk away from."

Her breath caught.

She turned.

And this time…

She didn't see just control.

She saw something worse.

Need.
