Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12 — No More Warnings

The apartment was silent.

Too silent.

Elena stood near the wall.

Heart racing.

Phone still in her hand.

The message burned on the screen.

"You shouldn't be there."

Her chest rose sharply.

"This isn't normal," she whispered.

Across the room—

Adrian was already moving.

Not fast.

Not rushed.

Worse.

Controlled.

Deadly.

He picked up his phone.

Dialed.

"Yes."

A pause.

"I want everything."

His voice was low.

Cold.

"Now."

Another pause.

"No mistakes."

He ended the call.

Elena watched him.

"You know who it is."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Her breath caught.

"Then tell me."

Silence.

Then—

"No."

Her hands clenched.

"Stop doing that."

"Doing what?"

"Shutting me out."

A pause.

Then—

"I'm keeping you alive."

That shut her up.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Minutes passed.

Then—

A vibration.

His phone.

He looked at it.

Once.

That was enough.

"Stay here."

"No."

His eyes snapped to her.

"I'm not staying behind again."

A pause.

Then—

"You don't have a choice."

Her jaw tightened.

"I do."

Silence.

Then—

Something changed.

Very slightly.

"Fine," he said.

That surprised her.

"Stay close."

They moved.

Fast.

Out of the apartment.

Into the hallway.

This time—

He didn't walk beside her.

He walked in front.

Blocking.

Protecting.

The elevator ride was silent.

Tense.

When the doors opened—

The lobby was different.

Not calm.

Not normal.

Security everywhere.

Tight.

Alert.

And in the center—

A man.

Late 30s.

Rough.

Unstable.

Eyes locked on her.

"There she is," he said.

Elena froze.

Her heart dropped.

She didn't know him.

But the way he looked at her—

Like he knew her.

Like he owned something.

Adrian stepped forward.

Blocking her instantly.

"Leave."

His voice was quiet.

But final.

The man laughed.

"Or what?"

Silence.

Adrian didn't answer.

Didn't need to.

The tension snapped.

The man stepped forward.

"You think you can just take people's lives and walk away?"

Elena frowned.

"What is he talking about?"

No answer.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"Last warning."

The man ignored it.

Looked past him.

At her.

"You have no idea what he's done, do you?"

Her chest tightened.

"What—"

"Enough."

Adrian's voice cut through everything.

Sharp.

Deadly.

The man smirked.

"Ask him," he said.

"Ask him what happens to people who get too close to you."

Silence.

Elena's heart pounded.

She looked at Adrian.

He didn't look at her.

That was the answer.

Suddenly—

The man moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Adrian reacted instantly.

Stepped forward.

Grabbed him.

Hard.

Pinned him against the wall.

Everything happened in seconds.

Security rushed in.

Too late.

Adrian's hand tightened.

His voice low.

Dangerous.

"You were warned."

The man laughed.

Even like that.

"You can't control everything."

A pause.

Then—

Adrian leaned closer.

"Yes," he said quietly.

"I can."

Elena's breath caught.

Because in that moment—

She believed him.

Security pulled the man away.

Struggling.

Still laughing.

"You think this ends here?" he shouted.

"It's just starting."

Then he was gone.

Silence fell again.

Heavy.

Elena stood frozen.

Heart racing.

Mind spinning.

Slowly—

Adrian turned.

Looked at her.

And for the first time—

She saw it.

Not control.

Not calculation.

Something darker.

Violence.

"You're leaving with me," he said.

Her voice shook slightly.

"That wasn't normal."

"No."

"What did he mean?"

A pause.

Then—

"Nothing you need to worry about."

"That's not true."

Silence.

Then—

He stepped closer.

Too close.

"You're safe," he said.

Her breath caught.

That should have reassured her.

But it didn't.

Because now she understood something.

If he had to protect her like this…

Then the danger wasn't small.

And neither was he.
