Chapter 16 - Master Hikaru

The Detention Hall was a cold, oppressive chamber carved deep into the heart of the mountain that overlooked the Hidden Village. Dim blue lanterns floated near the ceiling, casting long, wavering shadows across the stone walls. The air smelled of damp moss, old blood, and regret.

In the center of the hall, Kanashimi Oketo hung suspended.

Thick, glowing suppression ropes bound his wrists and ankles, stretched taut and anchored deep into the four stone walls. Another rope wrapped tightly around his eyes, blinding him completely. His body was forced into a standing position — arms spread wide, legs slightly apart — like a criminal on display. Every breath sent fresh pain through his still-healing wounds. Blood had dried on his fighter clothes, cracking whenever he shifted even slightly.

He hadn't spoken in hours.

The heavy iron door creaked open.

Elder Mizu stepped inside alone, his long gray robes dragging against the stone floor. The old man's face was stern, wrinkled with age and authority. Two younger guards followed but stayed near the entrance.

Mizu stopped a few feet away from the bound young man and studied him silently for a long moment.

"Kanashimi Oketo," he began, his voice echoing coldly through the chamber. "On your name, there are two standing orders from the village council — Kill on Sight… and Capture Alive. Quite the contradiction, isn't it?"

Kanashimi's dry lips curved into a weak, bitter smile even though he couldn't see the elder.

"I am ready to die," he answered hoarsely. His voice was calm, almost peaceful. "If that is what the village wants… then do it. Just… make sure Haru doesn't see."

Elder Mizu let out a low, mocking chuckle.

"How noble. The runaway traitor still plays the role of a loving brother. How touching."

He stepped closer, circling Kanashimi slowly like a predator examining wounded prey.

"You caused this village three years of shame. Your wife — no, your former wife — had to endure whispers and pitying looks every single day. And yet here you are… still breathing. Still defiant even while bound like a dog."

Kanashimi remained silent. His head hung slightly forward, exhaustion weighing on him like chains.

The door opened again.

A new set of footsteps echoed — slower, heavier, filled with quiet authority. The air in the chamber seemed to change.

Kanashimi's body stiffened as he recognized the familiar presence.

A deep, calm voice spoke from the entrance.

"…It's been three years, Kana."

Kanashimi's breath caught in his throat.

"Master… Hikaru?"

The blindfold prevented him from seeing, but he didn't need eyes. That voice belonged to the only man who had ever treated him like a son — Master Hikaru, the legendary fighter who had trained him since he was four years old. The man who taught him how to control his chaotic Special Arts. The man who once told him, "Power without heart is meaningless."

Hikaru walked forward slowly until he stood beside Elder Mizu. He was a tall, broad-shouldered man in his late fifties, with sharp silver hair and kind but weary eyes. A long scar ran down the left side of his face — a reminder of battles long past.

"Leave us," Hikaru said quietly to Elder Mizu.

The elder hesitated, then bowed slightly and exited with the guards, leaving the heavy door slightly ajar.

Now only teacher and student remained in the dimly lit chamber.

Hikaru looked at his former disciple — bound, blindfolded, and covered in dried blood. A heavy sigh escaped him.

"You look terrible, boy."

Kanashimi let out a weak, broken laugh that turned into a cough.

"Master… I never thought I'd hear your voice again."

Hikaru stepped closer. His hand gently touched the rope binding Kanashimi's eyes, but he didn't remove it.

"Tell me the truth, Kana. Did you really do what they accused you of back then?"

Kanashimi's voice cracked with emotion.

"No, Master. I swear on Haru's life… I never touched anyone. I was framed. Kage… my elder brother appeared last night. He told us everything. Shime framed me to protect the village from an organization that wanted my powers."

A long silence filled the chamber.

Hikaru closed his eyes, pain flickering across his face.

"I suspected as much," he murmured. "But the council… they refused to investigate properly. They needed a scapegoat. And you were the perfect one."

Kanashimi's inner thoughts:

Even Master knew…All these years of running, all the pain Yuna endured… it was because they needed someone to blame.I gave up everything… and for what?

Tears slipped from beneath the blindfold and ran down Kanashimi's cheeks.

"Master… I don't care if they execute me. But please… protect Haru. He's only four. He doesn't deserve any of this. He still believes I'm a good person. Don't let them take that away from him."

Hikaru placed a heavy hand on Kanashimi's shoulder.

"You foolish boy… You still think like a protector even when you're the one chained to the wall."

He leaned in closer and whispered so only Kanashimi could hear:

"Yuna has been fighting the council since she returned. She hasn't said much, but the way she looks at that child… she won't let them harm him. Not easily."

Kanashimi's shoulders trembled.

"Thank you… Master."

Hikaru stepped back. His voice grew firmer.

"Rest for now. The council will question you tomorrow. I will be there. And Kana…"

He paused at the door.

"…No matter what happens, remember what I taught you. Power is meaningless without heart. And your heart… has always been your greatest strength."

With those final words, Master Hikaru left the detention hall.

The heavy door slammed shut, leaving Kanashimi alone once again in darkness and silence.

He leaned his head back against the cold stone wall, tears still falling silently from beneath the blindfold.

Kanashimi's inner thoughts:

Master… Yuna… Haru…Everyone I love is here. And yet I've never felt more alone. If dying means Haru can live happily… then I'm truly ready.

Outside the detention hall, Haru was fast asleep in Yuna's arms, exhausted from crying. Yuna stared at the closed iron door, her expression unreadable.

The village lights glowed peacefully in the distance.

But beneath that peace, storms were gathering.

And no one — not Kanashimi, not Yuna, not even Master Hikaru — knew how violent those storms would become.

The walk back to her family house felt longer than the entire journey from the city.

Yuna carried Haru in her arms the whole way. The little boy had finally fallen asleep against her shoulder, exhausted from crying and the long day. His small hands still clutched her clothes tightly, as if afraid she might disappear too.

Yuna's heart felt heavy. Every step reminded her of the blood on her lips, the wounds that had healed thanks to Kanashimi's desperate act, and the truth Kage had forced upon them.

She reached the familiar wooden gate of her family home. The lanterns were still lit. As she pushed the door open with her shoulder, she saw her father — Master Isamu — standing in the entrance hall, fully dressed in his elder robes, about to leave for the council meeting.

He turned when he heard the door.

His eyes immediately fell on the sleeping child in Yuna's arms.

"Who is he?" Isamu asked, voice sharp and suspicious.

Yuna stepped inside and gently adjusted Haru's position so he wouldn't wake.

"This is Haru," she said quietly. "Kanashimi's little brother. He is the reason Kanashimi is still alive… and the reason I brought him back captured instead of dead."

Master Isamu's face hardened. His eyes narrowed with clear disapproval.

"Why did you bring him here? We have no place for the brother of a traitor in this house."

Yuna's grip on Haru tightened protectively.

"He has no one else, Father. If we leave him alone, he'll have nothing."

Isamu's temper flared instantly. His voice rose, echoing through the quiet house.

"That is enough madness! Leave that child outside or take him somewhere else. I will not allow the spawn of that criminal under my roof!"

The words struck Yuna like a slap.

Something inside her finally snapped.

She looked at her father with eyes full of pain, exhaustion, and three years of suppressed suffering.

"Did you ever think about me, Father?" Her voice trembled but grew stronger with every word. "Did you ever stop to ask what I felt when I heard the truth about my own brother?"

Isamu frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"C. Oketo," Yuna said bitterly. "Your son. My elder brother. He was the one who destroyed my life. He was the one who ordered Shime to frame Kanashimi. The elders knew parts of it and still chose to stay silent. And you… you never even suspected?"

She took a shaky breath, tears welling in her eyes.

"I saw Kage tonight. He proved everything. C. was working with that organization. He wanted Kanashimi's powers. He was willing to destroy his own sister's marriage, her happiness, everything… just for power. And you stand here telling me to throw away an innocent four-year-old boy?"

Isamu's face paled.

"What nonsense are you saying? C. is dead. He died years ago on a mission."

Yuna laughed bitterly, tears now falling freely.

"That's what they wanted us to believe. But it's the truth. If you cannot accept it… if you cannot even try to believe your own daughter, then I have no reason to stay here."

She turned toward the door, still holding Haru tightly.

"I will go to Master Hikaru. He considers Kanashimi as his own child. He will accept me as his daughter-in-law. At least there, Haru and I will not be treated like burdens."

"Yuna!" Isamu called out sharply, stepping forward. "Stop this right now!"

But it was too late.

Yuna had already walked out the door, her back straight despite the tears streaming down her face. She didn't look back even once.

Isamu stood frozen in the entrance of his own home, hand outstretched toward the empty doorway.

Yuna's inner thoughts as she walked away:

I'm sorry, Father…But I can't stay here anymore. Not when the people I should trust most are the ones who broke me.Haru… even if the whole world hates your brother, I won't let them hate you too.

Haru stirred slightly in her arms, murmuring sleepily.

"Onee-chan… are we going to see brother?"

Yuna hugged him closer, pressing a soft kiss to the top of his head.

"Yes, Haru. We're going somewhere safe."

Behind her, the lights of her family house grew smaller and smaller.

For the first time in three years, Yuna felt truly alone…

And yet, strangely, she also felt freer than she had in a very long time.
