Chapter 17 - New Home

The night had grown deep and cold by the time Yuna reached the quiet outskirts of the village.

She walked slowly, her arms aching from carrying Haru for so long, but she refused to put him down. The little boy had fallen asleep again against her shoulder, his small face peaceful despite everything that had happened. His breathing was soft and steady — the only comfort she had in this chaotic night.

Master Hikaru's house stood at the edge of the forest, separate from the main village clusters. It was a modest but elegant wooden home built on a raised platform, surrounded by glowing spirit trees and a small training ground. Lanterns floated gently around the entrance, casting warm golden light.

Just as Yuna reached the front gate, another figure appeared from the opposite path.

Master Hikaru.

He had just returned from the detention hall. His silver hair was slightly messy, and exhaustion lined his face. When he saw Yuna standing there with a sleeping child in her arms, he stopped mid-step, clearly confused.

"Yuna?" His deep voice carried surprise. "What are you doing here at this hour? And… who is this child?"

Yuna looked at him. For a moment, her strong facade cracked. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying, and her voice came out hoarse.

"Master Hikaru… I… I didn't know where else to go."

Hikaru's expression softened immediately. He opened the gate without hesitation and gestured for her to come inside.

"Come in first. You look exhausted."

Yuna stepped into the warm house. The scent of old wood and faint incense greeted her. Hikaru lit a few more lanterns and prepared a soft futon near the hearth. Yuna gently laid Haru down, covering him with a clean blanket. The boy stirred slightly but didn't wake, clutching the edge of the blanket tightly.

Hikaru sat down across from her, pouring two cups of warm tea. He waited patiently until she was ready to speak.

Yuna stared into her cup for a long time before finally speaking, her voice trembling.

"Today… everything fell apart."

She told him everything.

She told him about Kage's sudden appearance. About the truth behind Shime's framing. About how her own elder brother — C. Oketo — had been involved in the organization that wanted Kanashimi's powers. She told him how her father, Master Isamu, had refused to believe her and had demanded she throw Haru out of the house like he was trash.

Her voice broke several times as she spoke.

"I couldn't stay there anymore, Master. He called Haru the 'spawn of a criminal.' He didn't even care that this child is only four years old and has lost everything. I… I told him I would come to you. That you consider Kanashimi as your own son… and that you might accept me as your daughter-in-law."

She lowered her head, fresh tears falling into her tea.

"I know it's shameless of me to ask this after everything I've done to Kanashimi. I tried to kill him. I hated him for three years. But Haru… Haru still believes in his brother. And I… I don't know what's right anymore."

Master Hikaru listened in complete silence. When Yuna finally stopped speaking, he let out a long, heavy sigh and placed his cup down.

For a while, only the soft crackling of the hearth could be heard.

Then Hikaru spoke gently.

"Yuna… look at me."

She slowly lifted her tear-stained face.

Hikaru's eyes were kind, but firm.

"You have suffered greatly. More than anyone should have to. And yes… you made mistakes driven by pain and lies. But tonight, you chose to protect an innocent child instead of clinging to your hatred. That choice matters."

He reached out and gently placed his large, calloused hand on top of her head — the same way he used to do with Kanashimi when he was a boy.

"From this moment on, you are no longer just Yuna. You are my daughter-in-law. This house is now your home. And Haru… he is my grandson."

Yuna's eyes widened. Fresh tears spilled down her cheeks.

"Master…"

Hikaru smiled softly, though his eyes looked tired and sad.

"As for Kanashimi… I will do everything in my power to save him. I trained that boy. I watched him grow from a shy, talented child into a strong young man. I know his heart better than anyone. If what Kage said is true, then the village has committed a grave injustice."

He squeezed her hand gently.

"I cannot promise it will be easy. The elders are stubborn, and fear still rules their decisions. But I will fight for him. For both of them."

Haru stirred in his sleep and murmured softly, "Brother… don't go…"

Yuna looked at the sleeping boy, then back at Hikaru.

"Thank you… Father."

The word "Father" made Hikaru's eyes glisten for a brief moment. He nodded once, swallowing his own emotions.

"Rest now. Both of you. Tomorrow will be difficult. The council meeting will decide Kanashimi's fate. But you will not face it alone."

Yuna bowed her head deeply.

Master Hikaru stood up and brought extra blankets. He carefully tucked Haru in, then placed a gentle hand on the boy's head.

"Welcome to the family, little one," he whispered.

Yuna watched the scene with a complicated heart — pain, gratitude, and a tiny spark of hope all mixed together.

For the first time since Kage appeared, she felt like she wasn't completely alone.

Outside, the village slept under the moonlight.

But inside Master Hikaru's quiet home, three broken souls found a small moment of peace.

A former student. A conflicted wife. An innocent child.

And a teacher who refused to let his family be destroyed.

The real battle for Kanashimi's life — and for the truth — was about to begin.
