Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Signs of Darkness

Darkness did not arrive like a storm.

It did not roar across the skies with thunder, nor did it burn its way into the world with flames. There were no warnings, no sudden chaos that would force people to prepare.

Instead, it crept in.

Slowly. Quietly. Patiently.

Like a shadow stretching across the ground as the sun fades, it moved unnoticed, slipping into every corner of the world. And by the time anyone realized something was wrong… it was already too late.

Days had passed since the first attack.

The village had begun to recover, at least on the surface. Broken homes were rebuilt with careful hands. Burned wood was cleared away. The sound of tools striking against stone and earth filled the air once more. People spoke again, worked again, lived again.

Life tried to return to normal.

But it failed.

Because something had changed.

Something subtle. Something quiet. Something deeply wrong.

The sky itself no longer felt the same.

Even during the brightest hours of the day, sunlight struggled to reach the ground. It felt weaker, as though something unseen stood between the world and the light that once nourished it. The warmth that used to embrace the land had faded into something distant and cold.

The air carried a strange tension.

The wind whispered—not with voices, not with words, but with a feeling that settled deep into the chest.

Fear.

At the edge of the forest, near the river, a group of villagers gathered in uneasy silence. Their eyes were filled with uncertainty as they watched Varun work.

He stood calmly, his hands glowing faintly as water flowed around an injured man's arm. The liquid moved with precision, wrapping gently around the wound, pulsing with a soft blue light.

"Hold still," Varun said, his voice steady.

The man winced but obeyed.

Slowly, the water began to heal the injury, knitting flesh back together in a quiet, almost soothing rhythm.

Around them, the villagers watched.

They were grateful.

But they were also afraid.

"…Will it come back?" a woman asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Varun paused.

Just for a moment.

His hands remained steady, but his thoughts faltered.

"…We won't let it," he replied.

The words sounded strong. Certain. Reassuring.

But deep inside, he wasn't sure if they were true.

On a hill overlooking the village, Agniya stood with her arms crossed, her sharp eyes scanning the horizon.

"…Too quiet," she muttered.

A soft gust of wind swirled beside her as Vayu landed lightly, as if the air itself carried him.

"You're saying that like it's a bad thing," he said with a faint smile.

"It is," Agniya replied immediately. "After something like that, silence doesn't mean peace. It means something is waiting."

Vayu didn't argue.

Because he felt it too.

"…The wind feels wrong," he admitted.

Agniya glanced at him, her expression tightening slightly.

"You feel it as well?"

"…It's unstable," Vayu continued. "Like something is pushing against it. Not directly… but enough to disturb its flow."

Agniya exhaled slowly.

"…Same with fire," she said. "It doesn't respond the way it used to."

They fell silent after that.

Because they both understood what this meant.

The problem wasn't just the attacks anymore.

It was the elements themselves.

Near the center of the village, Prithvi worked tirelessly, lifting massive stones into place with precise movements. Each piece fit perfectly, restoring what had been destroyed.

But even she struggled.

As she placed one final stone, a crack suddenly formed beneath her hand.

She froze.

"…No," she whispered.

She pressed her palm against the ground, focusing deeply, trying to steady the earth beneath her.

Normally, the ground would respond instantly to her will.

But this time… it resisted.

Not completely.

But enough to frighten her.

"…This isn't natural," she said under her breath.

Not far from her, Jyoti stood alone.

Her staff rested lightly in her hand, its glow softer than usual, as if even the light itself was growing weaker.

She looked up at the sky once again.

"…Why is it getting worse?" she whispered.

Closing her eyes, she reached out with her power.

Light spread gently from her, flowing outward, touching the air, the ground, the very essence of the world around her.

But instead of moving freely…

It met resistance.

Something unseen. Something cold. Something dark.

Her eyes opened slowly.

"…It's spreading."

That night, the Guardians gathered.

A small fire burned between them. Not for warmth, but for light.

"It's happening everywhere," Varun said, his tone serious.

Prithvi nodded. "The earth is unstable."

"The wind too," Vayu added.

Agniya frowned, frustration clear in her voice. "…So what? The entire world is just falling apart now?"

"…Not falling apart," Nish said quietly.

All eyes turned to him.

"…Changing."

A heavy silence followed.

Jyoti leaned forward slightly. "…Explain."

Nish stared into the fire, watching as its flames flickered unevenly.

"He's not just attacking," Nish said. "He's affecting the balance itself."

"…How?" Agniya demanded.

"…By weakening the connection between us and the elements."

No one spoke for a moment.

Because they all understood what that meant.

"…If that happens…" Varun began.

"We lose control," Prithvi finished.

"…And if we lose control," Vayu added quietly, "the world won't survive."

Far away, in a distant kingdom, the signs had already begun.

The rivers were rising.

Not violently. Not like a flood.

But slowly. Unnaturally.

Water spilled into the streets, creeping into homes, forcing people to abandon everything they owned.

"This isn't normal!" someone shouted.

"The river has never done this before!"

Then someone pointed.

"…Look!"

The surface of the water shifted.

Not like waves.

Like something alive.

Then it split.

A creature emerged, its form twisting between water and shadow, something unnatural and terrifying.

The crowd screamed.

And the attack began.

Back in the village, Nish stood alone.

The others had gone to rest, but he remained awake, lost in thought.

"…A fragment…" he murmured.

The words echoed in his mind.

"…of me…"

He clenched his fist slightly.

"…What did it mean?"

The shadows around him shifted faintly, almost as if they were reacting to his thoughts.

"…If you're still there…" he said quietly.

"…show yourself."

Silence answered him.

Then a flicker.

Gone.

Nish narrowed his eyes. "…You're hiding."

But not from him.

From something else.

At that moment, Jyoti approached quietly.

"You're thinking too much again," she said gently.

Nish didn't turn. "…And you're not thinking enough."

Jyoti smiled faintly. "…That's why we balance each other."

She stepped closer, her expression softening. "…You're worried."

Nish remained silent.

"…About what it said," she continued.

He glanced at her. "…You heard?"

"I didn't need to," she replied. "I can see it."

Nish looked away again. "…It said I wasn't whole."

Jyoti stepped closer. "…Do you believe that?"

A long silence followed.

"…I don't know."

And that uncertainty was more dangerous than any enemy.

Suddenly, a pulse spread through the air.

Stronger than before.

The ground trembled. The sky darkened. The air tightened as if the world itself was holding its breath.

All six Guardians felt it at the same time.

Varun stood instantly. "…Another one."

"Not just one," Vayu said as he appeared beside them. "…Multiple."

Agniya grabbed her sword, a fierce grin appearing on her face. "…Finally."

Prithvi stepped forward. "…Where?"

Jyoti focused, her light flaring brighter than before.

"…Everywhere."

Silence.

Then Nish spoke.

"…He's done testing."

"…This is the next stage."

Far away, within the Abyss Citadel, Tamraj stood before a massive dark portal.

Energy poured from it, wild and unstable, yet completely under his control.

His voice echoed through the darkness.

"Spread."

The shadows obeyed.

Across the world, darkness began to rise.

Not in one place.

But everywhere.

Back in the village, Nish stared toward the horizon.

"…It's begun."

Jyoti tightened her grip on her staff.

"…Then we stop it."

Nish's eyes darkened slightly.

"…We try."
