David Kane stepped off the mana-rail shuttle into the bright afternoon sunlight, shoulders already relaxing. The trip into Havenridge had been pure torture — endless bureaucratic lines at the Mana Administration Office, repetitive questions about his server licenses, and the constant press of bodies from every race imaginable. His dark messy hair was even more disheveled than usual from nervously running his hands through it.
He adjusted the strap of his bag and started the familiar walk home along the quiet wooded path. Trees rustled gently overhead. Mana-lamps lining the road stayed dim in the daylight. The suburban outskirts felt like a different world compared to the crowded city center.
"Never again," David muttered to himself. "That was enough social interaction for the next year."
His modest single-story house came into view — peaceful, surrounded by a simple fence and his small enchanted herb garden. The older mana-powered car sat exactly where he had left it. Everything looked perfectly normal. No strange vehicles. No signs of anything out of place.
He let out a long, relieved sigh as he reached the front door, unlocked it, and stepped inside.
"I'm home," he said out of habit, kicking off his shoes in the entryway. The living room was bathed in warm afternoon light streaming through the windows. Everything was exactly as he'd left it that morning — his favorite mug on the counter, a half-read book on the coffee table, the faint steady hum of his mana servers drifting up from the basement.
David stretched his arms overhead, tension finally melting from his shoulders. "Peace and quiet at last. Just me, my servers, and—"
A thick, warm coil silently slid around his waist from behind.
Before he could even flinch, it wrapped firmly around his torso, pinning his arms to his sides with gentle but unyielding strength. A second coil looped smoothly around his thighs and lifted him slightly off the floor, feet dangling.
David's heart slammed against his ribs like a mana-crystal overload.
"Mmm~ Welcome home… Daaavid♡"
The voice was silky, playful, and far too close. Warm breath brushed the shell of his ear, sending an involuntary shiver racing down his spine.
Long black hair cascaded over his shoulder as Lira Voss leaned into view from behind him. Her golden eyes sparkled with open amusement, lips curved in a teasing, cat-like smile. She wore a dark off-shoulder ruffled top that hugged her figure beautifully, contrasting with the rich brown-orange scales of her massive 15-foot tail.
She gently tightened her coils, then spun him mid-air with effortless grace so he faced her directly. Their faces were only inches apart.
"My, my… You really are as cute as your housing profile suggested," Lira purred, tilting her head with deliberate slowness. "That wide-eyed, panicked little expression is absolutely adorable. Don't tell me this is your first time being held like this? How precious~"
David's face exploded into bright crimson. His brain completely short-circuited.
Internal monologue:
WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?! There's a lamia in my house! She's wrapping me up like I'm a stuffed toy! Why is she saying my name like that?! Her tail is so warm and strong and— NO! Stop! This is your house! Your sanctuary! Get it together!
He tried to speak, but only a strangled squeak emerged at first. After several desperate swallows, he managed a cracked, "W-Wait—! This has to be some kind of mistake! I live alone! I specifically chose this house because I work from home and—"
Lira let out a soft, melodic giggle that vibrated pleasantly through her coils. She leaned even closer, her nose almost brushing his. The tip of her tail playfully booped the end of his nose.
"Too late for complaints, Daaavid," she said sweetly, drawing out his name again in that teasing lilt. "The Liminal Integration Program already approved everything. Paperwork is filed, movers are gone… So it looks like you and I will be living together from now on~"
She finally lowered him back to the floor, but she didn't release him completely. One loose, comfortable coil remained wrapped around his waist, holding him in place as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
David's legs felt unsteady. He stared up at her, face still burning. "Y-You can't just… move in! This is my house! I filed for low-interaction housing specifically because of my servers downstairs. I need quiet to work—"
Lira's golden eyes flicked curiously toward the basement door, then returned to him with renewed amusement. She rested her chin lightly on his shoulder, her long black hair brushing against his cheek.
"Oh? Mana servers? How responsible of you. Maintaining nodes for the Mana Web must keep you very busy." She gave a small, playful squeeze with her coil. "Don't worry. I won't get in the way of your precious work. Much."
David's mind raced. He could feel every smooth scale through his hoodie. Every slight shift of her tail made his pulse spike. He had never been this physically close to anyone before — let alone a lamia who seemed to take genuine delight in watching him fluster.
"P-Please," he stammered, trying and failing to sound firm, "there must be an appeal process. I can call the office right now and explain—"
Lira hummed thoughtfully, her tail tip tracing a lazy circle on his lower back. "You could try, Daaavid. But these things take months, if not longer. In the meantime…"
David took a shaky step backward, desperate for some space. His heel caught the edge of the couch. He lost balance and fell backward onto the cushions with a soft thump.
Before he could scramble up, Lira's coils moved with fluid grace. One thick loop slid under his back while another gently but firmly pinned his shoulders and arms down against the couch. She leaned over him, her upper body hovering just above his, golden eyes gleaming with playful triumph.
"Oh dear," she cooed, voice dripping with mock concern. "Look at you, all sprawled out and helpless on your own couch. How clumsy~ Is this how you usually welcome guests, Daaavid?"
David's face burned hotter than any mana crystal. He was now completely pinned beneath her, the soft cushions at his back and her warm, powerful coils holding him in place. He could feel the smooth scales against his arms and chest. Every breath he took seemed to press him closer to her.
"I-I'm not— This isn't—" he sputtered, voice cracking embarrassingly. His heart was hammering so loudly he was sure she could hear it.
Lira chuckled softly, lowering herself just a little closer so her long black hair framed both their faces like a curtain. "Shhh. No need to be so nervous. We have all the time in the world to get comfortable with each other." Her tail tip lightly traced along his side in a slow, teasing stroke. "You have such a nice, quiet little house. Plenty of room for my coils… and maybe a little company for a shy boy like you."
She tilted her head, eyes half-lidded. "Don't worry. I'll be very gentle with you… at least for today."
David could only lie there, frozen and blushing furiously, trapped under the elegant lamia who had casually taken over his living room — and apparently his personal space.
The quiet life he had carefully built for himself was officially over.
And it had only just begun.
