Chapter 15 - Chapter XV — The King Beyond the Stars

The black star remained in the sky.

It did not move.

It did not shine.

It simply watched.

For three days, nothing happened.

The people of the merged world began rebuilding.

Kingdoms that had once been enemies traded food.

Former soldiers laid down their weapons.

The old symbols of the cycle were removed from temples.

For the first time, Aurelia walked through a city without seeing her own face carved into stone.

No prophecy.

No worship.

No fear.

Just life.

She liked it.

Veyne did too.

But neither trusted the black star.

On the fourth night, Aurelia found the boy standing alone outside the city.

"You haven't slept."

He looked at her.

"Neither have you."

"I don't need much sleep."

"Neither do I."

She stood beside him.

"What is it?"

He pointed toward the star.

"It wasn't supposed to survive."

"What?"

"The first king."

Aurelia's expression hardened.

"I thought he was gone."

"He was."

"Then what is that?"

The boy's voice became quiet.

"His shadow."

Veyne appeared behind them.

"How can a shadow survive without its owner?"

The boy looked at him.

"Because the owner wasn't the king."

Aurelia turned.

"Then who was?"

The boy pointed toward Veyne.

"You."

Veyne froze.

"No."

The boy shook his head.

"Not this Veyne."

He pointed at the star.

"The original."

Aurelia stared at the sky.

"You mean the first version?"

"Yes."

"The one who created the cycle?"

"Yes."

"And he's still alive?"

The boy nodded.

"Not alive."

He looked frightened.

"Waiting."

The black star suddenly moved.

It crossed the sky.

Slowly.

Directly toward them.

Aurelia reached for her sword.

Veyne stepped in front of her.

The boy remained still.

The star stopped above the city.

Then opened.

A massive eye appeared in the sky.

Every person in the city looked upward.

A voice echoed across the world.

"My children."

Aurelia's blood ran cold.

Veyne whispered:

"That's him."

The voice continued:

"You have finally become what I feared."

Aurelia raised her sword.

"What do you want?"

The eye focused on her.

"Nothing."

Aurelia frowned.

"Then why are you here?"

The voice answered:

"To offer you a choice."

The sky split.

Three doors appeared.

One gold.

One black.

One silver.

The voice spoke.

"The gold door returns you to the beginning."

The gold door opened.

Aurelia saw the original universe.

The first world.

The first version of herself.

The first version of Veyne.

"The black door destroys everything that came before."

The black door opened.

Nothing existed beyond it.

No memories.

No pain.

No history.

Complete silence.

Then the silver door opened.

Aurelia saw something impossible.

A world she had never seen.

A world where neither light nor darkness ruled.

A world where the merged people lived together.

A world with no prophecy.

No cycle.

No gods.

The boy whispered:

"That's the future."

Veyne looked at him.

"And the price?"

The boy didn't answer.

Aurelia understood.

"There is always a price."

The voice from the sky laughed softly.

"Now you understand."

Aurelia looked at Veyne.

"What would you choose?"

He looked at the three doors.

Then at her.

"I don't know."

She smiled.

"For once, neither do I."

The boy stepped forward.

"I know."

They looked at him.

He pointed toward the silver door.

"None of them."

Aurelia stared.

"What?"

The boy smiled.

"We don't need to choose the doors."

The eye in the sky darkened.

For the first time, the ancient voice sounded angry.

"You cannot refuse the choice."

The boy laughed.

"That's exactly what choice means."

The silver door disappeared.

Then the gold.

Then the black.

The sky became empty.

The ancient eye began closing.

But before it vanished, it spoke one final sentence.

"Then I will come to you."

The star disappeared.

Silence returned.

Aurelia lowered her sword.

Veyne looked at the boy.

"You just challenged something older than the universe."

The boy shrugged.

"It started it."

Aurelia laughed.

"You're going to be trouble."

The boy smiled.

"I learned from you."

Veyne sighed.

"That explains everything."

They returned to the city.

The streets were glowing with lanterns.

Music echoed from the square.

People celebrated their new world.

Aurelia stopped beneath the old statue.

It had been rebuilt.

But the sculptor had changed it.

There were no crowns.

No swords.

No chains.

Only three figures standing beneath a sunrise.

Aurelia.

Veyne.

The boy.

And beneath them was a new inscription:

"THEY DID NOT BREAK THE DARKNESS."

Aurelia read the second line.

"THEY LEARNED TO WALK THROUGH IT."

She smiled.

Veyne stood beside her.

"Do you like it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because it's finally a story we didn't inherit."

He looked at her.

"We'll make our own."

She nodded.

The boy ran ahead.

"Come on!"

Aurelia laughed.

"We should probably follow him."

Veyne smiled.

"Probably."

They began walking.

But before they could reach the boy, Aurelia stopped.

She felt something.

A pulse.

Deep beneath the world.

Not threatening.

Not evil.

Just ancient.

She looked down.

A tiny black flower had grown between the stones.

Its petals opened.

Inside was a single silver eye.

Aurelia stared.

Veyne noticed.

"What is it?"

She didn't answer.

The flower whispered.

Not in words.

In memory.

Aurelia saw a man standing alone beneath a dead sky.

A crown of broken stars rested on his head.

He looked directly at her.

And he was smiling.

Aurelia stepped backward.

The vision disappeared.

Veyne took her hand.

"What did you see?"

She looked at him.

For the first time in a long while, she was afraid.

"The next enemy."

Veyne's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Aurelia looked toward the stars.

"I don't know."

Then the flower closed.

Far beyond their world, something opened its eyes.

Something that had never been part of the cycle.

Something that had been watching since the first beginning.

And somewhere in the darkness between worlds, a man's voice whispered:

"Let them believe they've won."

A pause.

Then a smile.

"The war hasn't even begun."
