Chapter 14 - Chapter XIV — The Last Memory

Aurelia stood beneath a white sky.

Veyne was beside her.

The boy stood between them.

No mountains.

No kingdom.

No war.

No darkness.

Only endless white.

Aurelia looked at Veyne.

"Where are we?"

He looked around.

"I don't know."

The boy answered:

"Before."

Aurelia turned.

"Before what?"

"Before you became Aurelia and Veyne."

The white world changed.

Two enormous figures appeared.

One made of light.

One made of shadow.

Aurelia watched them.

She knew them.

She understood.

They were the original forms of herself and Veyne.

The two beings stood together.

Then something appeared between them.

A small spark.

The first feeling.

The first love.

The first desire.

The first possibility.

Aurelia whispered:

"That was him."

The boy nodded.

"I was born from the space between you."

Veyne stared at the spark.

"Then why did we separate?"

The boy looked at him.

"Because you were afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of becoming one."

Aurelia frowned.

"Why?"

"Because you believed that if you became one, neither of you would remain yourselves."

Veyne looked at Aurelia.

"So we chose separation."

"Yes."

"And the universe was born from it."

"Yes."

Aurelia's expression darkened.

"But someone interfered."

The boy nodded.

"The first kings."

The vision changed.

The first kings appeared.

Thousands of beings existed in the white world.

They saw the two original beings.

They feared them.

Because the two could create worlds simply by imagining them.

So the kings tried to control them.

They separated light from darkness.

They gave them names.

They gave them bodies.

They gave them memories.

They created rules.

And eventually—

they created the cycle.

Aurelia watched in horror.

Every tragedy.

Every death.

Every reunion.

Every betrayal.

All of it had been engineered.

Not because the kings hated them.

Because they feared what would happen if Aurelia and Veyne ever discovered their true nature.

Veyne clenched his fists.

"They were afraid of us."

The boy nodded.

"Very."

Aurelia looked at the endless white.

"Then why didn't they simply destroy us?"

The boy smiled sadly.

"Because they couldn't."

"Why?"

"Because you created them too."

Silence.

Aurelia understood.

The kings were not separate from them.

Everything that existed had emerged from the first separation.

They were their own consequences.

Their own children.

Their own creations.

The universe wasn't their prison.

It was their reflection.

Veyne looked at the boy.

"And you?"

The boy smiled.

"I am the part you refused to understand."

Aurelia touched his face.

"Love?"

"Choice."

She smiled.

"Perhaps they're the same thing."

The boy's eyes softened.

"Perhaps."

The white world began collapsing.

Aurelia looked around.

"What is happening?"

The boy looked toward Veyne.

"He has to choose."

"Choose what?"

"Whether to become the first Veyne."

Aurelia's blood went cold.

The crowned stranger appeared in the distance.

His voice echoed:

"You cannot escape what you are."

Veyne looked at him.

Then at Aurelia.

The stranger extended his hand.

"Come back."

Veyne didn't move.

"You are darkness."

Veyne looked at his own hands.

"Maybe."

"You are destruction."

"Maybe."

"You are the end."

Veyne smiled.

"Then I'll decide what comes after."

The stranger's expression changed.

Aurelia stepped beside Veyne.

"And I decide too."

The boy joined them.

The three stood together.

The stranger stared.

"You cannot defeat me."

Aurelia shook her head.

"We don't need to."

The stranger frowned.

"Then what?"

Veyne answered:

"We forgive you."

The stranger froze.

Aurelia continued:

"You were created from our fear."

The boy said:

"You became cruel because you believed control was the same as safety."

The stranger's face cracked.

Literally.

Thin fractures appeared across his skin.

"No…"

Veyne stepped forward.

"You don't have to be us."

The stranger screamed.

"I AM YOU!"

The white world shattered.

Aurelia woke on the stone floor.

Veyne was beside her.

The boy was unconscious.

The black heart was gone.

So was the crowned stranger.

Aurelia looked around.

The chamber was collapsing.

"Veyne?"

He opened his eyes.

"I'm here."

She laughed softly.

"Good."

He sat up.

"What happened?"

"You chose."

"Chose what?"

"To remain yourself."

He looked at his hands.

The darkness was gone.

Then he noticed something.

Aurelia's eyes.

They had changed.

One was gold.

The other silver.

He stared.

"Aurelia…"

She touched her face.

"What?"

"Your eyes."

She looked at the reflection in the broken crystal.

Her expression changed.

The boy opened his eyes.

He looked at her.

Then smiled.

"It worked."

Aurelia looked at him.

"What did we become?"

The boy stood.

"Something the kings never imagined."

"What?"

He smiled.

"Free."

The mountain collapsed.

The three ran.

They reached the surface just before the entrance disappeared behind them.

The valley was different.

The sky was clear.

The mountains were silent.

But something had changed.

People had appeared.

Thousands.

From every kingdom.

Every surviving world.

They stood together beneath the morning sun.

Aurelia stared.

"They came through."

The boy nodded.

"The worlds merged."

Veyne looked around.

"Then the old worlds are gone."

"No."

The boy smiled.

"They're finally one."

Aurelia looked toward the horizon.

For the first time, she could feel every version of herself.

Not as memories.

As possibilities.

She could feel every version of Veyne too.

But none controlled them.

None dictated their future.

They were finally free to become something new.

Aurelia looked at Veyne.

"So what happens now?"

Veyne smiled.

"We live."

She laughed.

"That's it?"

"For once."

He looked toward the sunrise.

"I think that's enough."

The boy walked ahead of them.

Then stopped.

He looked toward the sky.

His smile disappeared.

Aurelia noticed.

"What is it?"

He pointed upward.

A black star had appeared in the daylight.

Veyne's expression hardened.

"That wasn't there before."

"No."

Aurelia stared.

"What does it mean?"

The boy whispered:

"It means someone else survived."
