Chapter 17 - Chapter XVII— The Woman in the Mirror

Aurelia woke standing.

There was no floor beneath her.

No ceiling.

No walls.

Only darkness.

Then a mirror appeared.

Tall.

Cracked.

Ancient.

Aurelia approached it carefully.

Her reflection stared back.

But it wasn't copying her.

It was watching her.

"Aurelia."

She froze.

The reflection smiled.

Not kindly.

Not cruelly.

Sadly.

"You finally came back."

Aurelia stepped away.

"Who are you?"

The reflection raised one hand.

Aurelia didn't.

Yet the reflection touched the glass.

"I am the part of you that remembers."

Aurelia's heart began beating faster.

Behind her, Veyne appeared.

His hand went toward his weapon.

The reflection looked at him.

"Veyne."

He froze.

"You know my name."

"I know every version of it."

The mirror rippled.

Images appeared across its surface.

Aurelia saw a battlefield.

A ruined kingdom.

A black sky.

Veyne standing alone.

Then another image.

Aurelia standing before him.

She was wearing a crown.

Her expression was empty.

Veyne looked at her.

Not with hatred.

With trust.

The image changed.

Aurelia watched herself raise a blade.

She couldn't look away.

"No…"

Veyne stared at the mirror.

His face became pale.

The reflection whispered:

"You killed him."

Aurelia shook her head.

"I wouldn't."

"You did."

"Why?"

The reflection's expression changed.

Because that was the question Aurelia had been avoiding.

The mirror showed another world.

Another life.

Another Veyne.

Another Aurelia.

Then another.

And another.

Every time they found each other.

Every time they became close.

Every time the world began to collapse.

And every time Aurelia stood before Veyne with the same terrible decision.

The blade.

The crown.

The tears she refused to remember.

Veyne watched in silence.

"How many times?" he asked.

The reflection answered.

"Enough."

Aurelia turned toward him.

"I didn't remember."

"I know."

"I didn't know."

"I know."

There was no anger in his voice.

That made it worse.

The reflection stepped closer to the glass.

"You called yourself the hero because heroes don't have to admit what they did."

Aurelia looked at her.

"What am I?"

The reflection whispered:

"The architect."

The darkness shook.

Veyne stepped forward.

"What does that mean?"

The reflection looked at him.

"She built the cycle."

Aurelia's blood ran cold.

"No."

"She built the worlds."

"No."

"She built the lives."

"No."

"And she built every version of you."

Veyne stared at Aurelia.

The mirror showed the first memory.

Aurelia standing before a dying world.

Cities burning in the distance.

The sky split open.

Something enormous moved behind the clouds.

Beside her stood Veyne.

Younger.

Tired.

Still alive.

Aurelia heard her own voice from the memory.

"If I cannot save you here…"

The memory ended.

Aurelia stared at the mirror.

"What happened?"

The reflection answered:

"You chose to create another world."

The mirror cracked.

Another memory appeared.

Then another.

Each one showed the same pattern.

Aurelia and Veyne meeting.

Aurelia and Veyne choosing each other.

The world collapsing.

Aurelia creating another cycle.

Veyne returning.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Aurelia finally understood why the city had been filled with copies.

It wasn't a city.

It was a graveyard of memories.

Every life she had tried to bury was still alive somewhere.

Veyne turned toward her.

"How many times did you make me forget?"

Aurelia couldn't speak.

The reflection answered for her.

"Every time."

Veyne closed his eyes.

"And every time I found her again."

"Yes."

"Why?"

The reflection smiled faintly.

"Because she could control the world."

It looked at Aurelia.

"But she could never control him."

The mirror shattered.

Aurelia cried out as darkness swallowed them.

One final image remained in the broken glass.

Aurelia.

Wearing a crown.

Standing before an enormous black throne.

And behind the throne…

A shadow wearing her face.
