Chapter 19 - Chapter XVIIII — The Face of the Enemy

Aurelia stood before the mirror.

Her reflection smiled.

She did not.

Veyne stood behind her.

The silver-eyed boy watched from the shadows.

The reflection spoke first.

"You finally understand."

Aurelia's voice was barely audible.

"You're the king."

"No."

The reflection tilted its head.

"The king was never a person."

The mirror darkened.

Aurelia saw every world again.

Every cycle.

Every version of herself.

Every version of Veyne.

But now she noticed something she had missed.

The same fear existed in every Aurelia.

The fear of losing him.

The fear of failure.

The fear that if she stopped controlling everything, everything would disappear.

The reflection placed a hand against the glass.

"I was born from that fear."

Aurelia stared.

"You're me."

"I am what you became when you decided fear was wisdom."

The mirror changed.

Aurelia saw herself creating the first cycle.

She saw herself building worlds.

She saw herself choosing endings.

She saw herself removing Veyne's memories.

She saw herself repeating the same mistake.

But behind her stood the shadow.

The first king.

It had never commanded Aurelia.

It had never possessed her.

It had simply whispered to her fear.

And Aurelia had listened.

The realization was worse than any monster.

The enemy had never needed to control her.

She had controlled herself.

Veyne stepped forward.

"If she created you…"

The reflection looked at him.

"…then you can destroy her."

Aurelia turned.

"No."

Veyne looked at her.

"I won't."

The reflection laughed.

"That's why you always lose."

Veyne stepped closer to the mirror.

"You're wrong."

The reflection's smile disappeared.

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

He looked at Aurelia.

"She made terrible choices."

Aurelia lowered her eyes.

"But she made them because she was afraid."

The reflection shook its head.

"Fear is what keeps worlds alive."

"No."

Aurelia stepped forward.

"Fear is what keeps worlds trapped."

The mirror began cracking.

The reflection screamed.

Not in pain.

In rage.

Aurelia placed her hand against the glass.

"I am not the woman who made those choices anymore."

The reflection stared at her.

"You will become me again."

"Maybe."

Aurelia's voice remained steady.

"But this time, I'll choose differently."

The mirror shattered.

Thousands of pieces fell into darkness.

Every fragment contained another Aurelia.

Another life.

Another mistake.

Another ending.

Aurelia watched them disappear.

The silver-eyed boy approached.

"You broke her."

Aurelia shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the empty space where the mirror had been.

"I accepted her."

The boy's expression changed.

"That wasn't supposed to happen."

Veyne looked at him.

"What wasn't?"

The boy turned toward the sky.

"The cycle was built on her fear."

He looked back at Aurelia.

"If she no longer fears the ending…"

Aurelia finished the sentence.

"…then the cycle has nothing left to feed on."

The world trembled.

The black rivers began flowing backward.

The white trees bent toward the sky.

The dead stars above them ignited one by one.

Then a red moon appeared.

Huge.

Close.

Impossible.

Aurelia stared upward.

The boy whispered:

"You shouldn't have broken it."

"Why?"

"Because the cycle was keeping something out."

Veyne looked at him.

"What?"

The boy's silver eyes reflected the red moon.

"The things that created the kings."

Silence.

Aurelia felt the world watching her.

Then a voice echoed across the sky.

Not the voice of the king.

Not the voice of the reflection.

Something older.

Something that had existed before the first world.

It spoke one word.

Her name.

"Aurelia."

She looked upward.

The red moon opened.

Like an eye.

The ground split beneath them.

And somewhere beyond the broken world, a door began to appear.

On it were three names.

AURELIA.

VEYNE.

THE CHILD.

Veyne looked at Aurelia.

The boy stared at the door.

Aurelia understood.

They hadn't escaped the cycle.

They had reached its beginning.

And something beyond it had been waiting for them all along.
