Zia knew the moment Sofee Stopped talking too much.
Silence ,when it came from Sofee ,was never harmless.
"You're avoiding me," Sofee said during free period, arms crossed, voice low.
Zia looked up from her notebook. "I'm really not."
Sofee leaned closer."Then tell me --what's going on with you and Christopher?"
The name landed softly. Too softly.
Zia's pen paused for half a second.
"We're classmates, " She said evenly ."That's all."
Sofee laughed once--Short,bitter. "You don't look at classmates like that ."
Zia met her eyes.calm.steady."You're imagining things. "
Sofee stepped back, hurt flashing before she masked it."Fine. Just...don't forget who noticed you first. "
She walked away.
Zia's hands trembled slightly--but only slightly.
On the other side of campus, Leo finally broke .
"You don't even see me anymore, "he said to Christopher near the lockers.
Christopher sighed. "That's not true."
Leo's voice dropped. "You smile like someone else owns it now."
That hit.
Christopher softened. "Leo ...you matter to me.just not in the way you want."
Leo nodded slowly. Acceptance pretending to be strength. "I know .I just needed to hear it."
They stood there --friends, still--but something fragile had shifted.
Jason watched Zia from across the courtyard.
She laughed at something her friend said. Not the laugh she gave him.lighter .Freer.
That night ,at dinner, Jason's father spoke casually.
"Christopher Hale's father will be attending the charity meet ,"he said ."powerful family. Old money ."
Jason stiffened. "Hale ?"
"Yes .why?"
"No reason, " Jason muttered--but his mind was already racing.
Christopher reached home late.
His father wasn't alone.
A women stood near the window--elegant ,unfamiliar, nervous.
"Chris, " his father said carefully, " your mother wants to see you."
The word hit like glass.
His real mother.
Christopher's chest tightened. Years of silence. Of absence. Of unanswered questions.
She returned toward him, eyes wet."I just want to talk."
Christopher took a step back.
"Some things, " he said quietly, "don't get fixed just because you're ready now."
He walked past her ,into his room, shutting the door.
His phone buzzed almost immediately.
A folded -note photo. Zia's handwriting.
Whatever you're facing...you don't face it alone.
Christopher closed his eyes.
For the first time in years, the chaos didn't swallow him whole.
