Christopher didn't sleep that night.
Memories he'd buried for years kept resurfacing--his mother's absence, unanswered birthdays, the silence that had shaped him more than her presence ever could.
In the morning, his stepfather knocked once before entering.
"You don't have to forgive her ," he said gently. "But you don't have to bleed alone either. "
Christopher looked up,surprised.
"You've always been there ,"he said quietly.
His stepfather smiled. " That's a choice. Blood isn't. "
For the first time ,Christopher didn't argue.
At school ,Jason walked beside Zia longer than usual.
"You've changed, "he said casually.
Zia didn't stop walking. "People grow."
Jason watched her carefully. "Just don't forget who's standing with you ."
She met his eyes then--- firm, honest. "I haven't. But standing beside someone doesn't mean owning them."
Jason didn't reply.
But doubt had officially taken root .
Sofee sat alone in the cafeteria, watching Christopher laugh with Evan and Leo.
She clenched her fist.
Later that day,she cornered Leo near the vending machines.
"You've noticed it too, haven't you ?" She asked.
Leo looked at her, tired but calm."Not everything that hurts needs to be exposed. "
Sofee scoffed. " That's easy to say when you're not invisible. "
Leo paused. " You're not invisible. You're just looking at the wrong person. "
That shut her up --but not her thoughts.
After last bell, the folded note appeared again.
Same handwriting.
Same silence.
The store room welcomed them like it always did-- quiet, forgotten, safe .
Zia reached for Christopher's hand first time .
He didn't hesitate.
"My mom's here ," he said .
Zia squeezed his fingers. "Do you want her to be ?"
"I don't know ," he admitted. "But I'm not as angry as I thought I'd be ."
She smiled softly. " That's growth. Even if if hurts."
He leaned in --not for a kiss this time .just his forehead resting against hers.
"I don't understand love ," he said ."But when I'm here...things make sense. "
Zia didn't answer with words.
She didn't need to.
Outside the door,footsteps paused .
Then moved on.
Close calls .
Unasked questions .
Unspoken truths.
Everything was shifting.
But the secret--still only theirs.
