At first, Jade froze and turned swiftly to face him, clueless but alert. She had never heard him yell before, and with the look on his face, she knew that danger was looming nearby.
"Now," he said again without moving an inch from the ice rink. He stretched out his hand for her to grab, but what neither of them expected was a bullet that cut through the air, crashing into the sheet of ice just below Jade's feet.
Out of fear, she froze, and at a bad time too. Her skate sank into one of the cracks, and she fell forward, breaking her fall with her hand, only to strain it in the process. By now, Van had already faced the man who had taken the shot. It was safe to say that the mistake he made was not shooting Van directly.
