Chapter 9 - Gold Panning

Roy bent down, and scooped a large amount of pebbles and sand.

He dipped it into the flowing river.

He tilt it pan slightly, just enough for the muddy water to flow outward.

He swirl it around gently, and let the pebbles and extra sand drift out unto the river until small fragments of sands remained.

He brushed off the tiny fragments of rock, and dug dipper until the metal bottom of the pan revealed tiny specks of bright, buttery yellow flakes.

Gold.

"I've strucked it rich!" Roy laughed, amusement filled his eyes as he held the pan.

As he swirl the tiny gold tails, an idea struck him.

If the mirror is capable of shrinking objects whenever it enters the mirror, can it also make things bigger?

Just as he was thinking this, Bah Long suddenly appeared on the river bank, along with him was an old, ragged clothed man holding a cane.

Bah Long immediately jumped down, and gently assisted the old man with him.

Together, they performed a one-knee bow to Roy.

"Heavenly Immortal, this is my father, the village chief Bah Kong." Bah Long said, pointing to the old man beside him.

The old man slowly lifted his gaze, as though his title as a village chief granted him authority to look directly at Roy.

Roy sensed something was wrong, so he asked the two kneeling figures in a cold, almost piercing tone.

"What seems to be the problem, that you have to consult me?" Roy asked, his gaze fixed at Bah Kong, "If it's anything about the reconstruction of your village, surely you can handle it on your own."

He paused, letting the words sank deeper onto the kneeling Father and Son.

"What is it that you ask?"

The two men immediately stated their purpose.

They mentioned that the village does not have any problems about the reconstruction at all, the refugees have worked tirelessly and has done a great job rebuilding the village

However, the village does not have any provisions left to sustain the working people, and the meat bestowed by the Immortal Zudra is already running low and will not be enough to feed thousands of workers.

"Thus, the village treasury have been empty for years, we survived by gathering wild herbs and hunting mountain rabbits." Bah Long said, his gaze still fixed on the ground as if he wasn't speaking to a person at all but to the dirt and dust.

Bah Kong raised his gaze again and spoke in a weak tone.

"So, we shamelessly ask for the Great Heavenly Immortal to grant us a path to prosperity."

"Do not bother about provisions, i shall grant you enough food to sustain you and the laborers for years." Roy replied, lazily waved his hand signaling the two men to dismiss themselves.

The father and son did not clearly understood the meaning behind Roy's words.

Yet seeing the Immortal Zudra signaled the dismissal of the meeting, they couldn't help but leave, still wondering if the Immortal would truly grant them food.

Roy watched the shrinking figures, his mind racing as he think about ways on how to provide relief for thousands of people.

Feeding a small village would be easy, feeding a town would be difficult.

Just as his mind drifted off to how he might help the starving people, he suddenly remembered the small gold tails on his pan.

He repeated the procces of scoop, dip, tilt and swirl of gold panning for hours.

---

Dusk settled down across the horizon, a bright red sky shone toward Roy's face like a manager reminding a hard-working employee that his shift was over.

Roy looked toward the dusk settled sky, realizing that he had been panning for gold for hours and had forgotten to eat.

His stomach growled violently, as if his abdomen were urging him to refill his empty stomach.

He packed up his small mountain of gold tails and walked slowly toward the village.

Smoke and fire rose from the camps, the aroma of boiled meat drifted along the winds until it reached Roy's nose.

The smell of food made his stomach growl even more violently, he sped up his pace and reached the mirrors entrance.

He stepped out and arrived at his apartment holding a tiny ball of cloth packed with bright yellow gold dust.

He immediately grabbed his wallet and dashed toward the nearest store, there he bought himself some food and filled his empty stomach.

After eating his fill, he strode onto another store to buy supplies for his tiny residence inside his magical mirror.

He arrived again at his apartment, darkness has already swallowed his tiny village with only small, vivid flames of torches provided light under the night sky.

The villagers inside the mirror were already resting, not like the modern people who act like vampires that rarely needed sleep.

With no eyes constantly patroling the area, it created the perfect opportunity for Roy to test his magical mirrors sizing abilities.

He grabbed the small ball of cloth filled with glinting yellow dust, and prepared to enlarge his gold.
