Chapter 11: Sandcastles and Promises
---
[Scene: Kenta's Room - Evening]
(Kenta sits at his desk, but he's not working. He's staring at an old photograph. Sui and Yui, age 7, building sandcastles with him at the park.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Where did the time go?"
(His phone buzzes. A group message.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun! Yui and I were talking... remember the old park? Near the river?"
Yui: "The one with the big slide! And the sandbox where we built castles!"
Sui: "We should go there! This weekend! All three of us!"
Yui: "Yes! Let's revisit our childhood!"
Kenta: (staring at the photo) (typing) "...Okay."
Sui: "Really?!"
Yui: "Kenta-kun agreed!"
Sui: "Saturday morning! Meet at the station!"
Kenta: (putting down phone) (looking at photo again) (thinking) "So much has changed. But maybe... some things haven't."
---
[Scene: Saturday Morning - The Old Neighborhood]
(The three stand at the entrance to a quiet park. Trees have grown taller. The slide is rustier. But it's the same place.)
Sui: (eyes wide) "It's... smaller than I remember."
Yui: (nodding) "Everything looked so big when we were kids."
Kenta: (looking around) "The sandbox is still there."
(He points. The same sandbox. Worn but recognizable.)
Sui: (running toward it) "Oh my gosh! Our sandbox!"
Yui: (following) "We built so many castles here!"
Kenta: (walking slower, memories flooding back)
---
[Flashback: 10 Years Ago - Age 7]
(The sandbox is full of children. Three of them huddle together near a corner—young Kenta, young Sui, young Yui.)
Young Yui: (packing sand) "We need to make the walls thicker! So the evil king can't break in!"
Young Sui: (nodding seriously) "And a moat! Every castle needs a moat!"
Young Kenta: (carefully carving windows) "The walls should be at least 20 centimeters thick for structural integrity."
Young Yui: (staring) "Kenta-kun, you're so weird."
Young Kenta: "I'm practical."
Young Sui: (laughing) "He's both!"
(They work together, laughing, arguing about tower placement, getting sand everywhere.)
Young Yui: (holding up a stick) "I declare this the Kingdom of Three!"
Young Sui: "What's our royal title?"
Young Yui: "I'm the Brave Queen!"
Young Sui: "I'm the Cheerful Princess!"
(They both look at Kenta.)
Young Kenta: (thinking) "I'm... the Math King?"
Young Yui: (giggling) "The Math King! Perfect!"
Young Sui: (clapping) "Long live the Math King!"
(Young Kenta's ears turn red, but he's smiling.)
---
[Scene: Present Day - The Park]
Sui: (sitting in the sandbox) "I can't believe you were the Math King."
Yui: (sitting beside her) "You've always been like this, Kenta-kun."
Kenta: (sitting across from them) "I haven't changed much."
Sui: (softly) "You have. You're taller. Smarter. More... quiet."
Yui: (nodding) "But also the same. Still kind. Still weird. Still our Kenta-kun."
Kenta: (looking at the sand) "I remember when you moved away, Sui."
Sui: (quietly) "I remember too. I cried for weeks."
Yui: "I cried when Yui moved too. I thought I'd never see either of you again."
Kenta: "I looked for you. Both of you. In crowds. In new students. I never forgot."
Sui: (tearing up) "Kenta-kun..."
Yui: (also tearing up) "You looked for us?"
Kenta: (nodding) "You were my first friends. My only friends."
---
[Flashback: 9 Years Ago - Age 8]
(The park. Young Kenta sits alone in the sandbox, building by himself.)
Young Kenta: (muttering) "The moat needs to be deeper..."
(A woman calls from across the park.)
Woman: "Yui! Time to go!"
Young Yui: (running to Young Kenta) "Kenta-kun! We're moving tomorrow!"
Young Kenta: (looking up) "Moving?"
Young Yui: (crying) "To another city! Far away! I don't want to go!"
Young Kenta: (standing) "But... who will be the Brave Queen?"
Young Yui: (hugging him) "I'll always be the Brave Queen! Even far away!"
Young Kenta: (stiffening) "You're... hugging me."
Young Yui: (laughing through tears) "You're so weird!"
(She runs off. Young Kenta stands there, alone.)
---
[Flashback: 8 Years Ago - Age 9]
(The park. Young Kenta and Young Sui are the only ones left.)
Young Sui: (building quietly) "Kenta-kun... I have to tell you something."
Young Kenta: "What?"
Young Sui: (looking down) "My family is moving too. Next week."
Young Kenta: (freezing) "You too?"
Young Sui: (crying) "I don't want to leave you! You're my best friend!"
Young Kenta: (quietly) "You're my best friend too."
Young Sui: (hugging him) "Promise me we'll meet again!"
Young Kenta: "Promise."
Young Sui: "When we're older! We'll find each other!"
Young Kenta: "I'll look for you."
Young Sui: (pulling back, wiping tears) "Promise?"
Young Kenta: "Promise."
(She runs off. Young Kenta sits alone in the sandbox. The castle they built together crumbles slowly in the wind.)
---
[Scene: Present Day - The Park]
Sui: (wiping eyes) "You kept your promise."
Yui: (nodding) "You found us. Both of us."
Kenta: "You found me first. Sui crashed into me. Yui... I accidentally saw you changing."
Sui: (laughing through tears) "That's so on brand for you."
Yui: (also laughing) "Accidental pervert childhood friend reunions!"
Kenta: "I didn't mean to—"
Sui: "We know, Kenta-kun. We know."
(They sit in comfortable silence. The wind blows. Leaves fall.)
Yui: (quietly) "Kenta-kun... do you ever wonder what our lives would be like if we never moved away?"
Kenta: (thinking) "I wouldn't be the same person."
Sui: "Neither would we."
Kenta: "But we're here now. That's what matters."
Sui: (smiling) "Yeah."
Yui: (also smiling) "Yeah."
---
[Scene: The Old Slide]
(They walk to the slide. It's rusted but still standing.)
Sui: "Remember how scared I was of this?"
Yui: (giggling) "You'd stand at the top for like ten minutes!"
Sui: "It was SO high!"
Kenta: "I held your hand. Every time."
Sui: (blushing) "You did. You always held my hand."
Yui: "And you always caught me at the bottom!"
Kenta: "You jumped before reaching the end. Every time."
Yui: (grinning) "Because you were there to catch me!"
Sui: (looking at Kenta) "You've always taken care of us."
Kenta: (looking away) "It was nothing."
Sui: "It was everything."
---
[Scene: The Swings]
(They sit on the swings. Old, creaky, but functional.)
Yui: (swinging gently) "This park is so quiet now."
Sui: (also swinging) "No kids playing anymore."
Kenta: "They grow up. Move on."
Yui: "But we came back."
Sui: "We came back for each other."
Kenta: (looking at them) "You came back for me."
Sui: (meeting his eyes) "Always."
Yui: (also meeting his eyes) "Forever."
(Kenta's ears turn red. He looks away.)
Kenta: "You two are too much."
Sui: (laughing) "And you're too little!"
Yui: (also laughing) "Too little emotions!"
Kenta: "I have emotions."
Sui: "Show us!"
Kenta: (pause) "...I'm happy. Right now. With you both."
Sui: (softening) "That's enough."
Yui: (nodding) "More than enough."
---
[Scene: The Ice Cream Cart]
(A small ice cream cart is parked near the park entrance. Same one from years ago.)
Sui: (gasps) "The ice cream cart is still here!"
Yui: (running toward it) "No way!"
Kenta: (following) "It's the same vendor."
(Old man behind the cart smiles.)
Vendor: "Well well. You three used to come here all the time."
Sui: (amazed) "You remember us?!"
Vendor: "Hard to forget. The loud girl, the cheerful girl, and the boy who always calculated which flavor had the best volume-to-price ratio."
Yui: (laughing) "That's so Kenta-kun!"
Kenta: (ears red) "It was practical."
Vendor: "Same flavors?"
Sui: "Strawberry!"
Yui: "Vanilla!"
Kenta: (pause) "The same."
(He gets chocolate. Same as always.)
(They sit on a bench, eating ice cream.)
Sui: (mouth full) "Tastes exactly the same!"
Yui: (nodding) "Childhood flavor!"
Kenta: (eating quietly) (thinking) "Same park. Same ice cream. Same people."
(He looks at them. They're laughing about something silly.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Different now. But also the same. Always the same."
[Scene: Sunset - The Park Exit]
(The sun is setting. They stand at the park entrance.)
Sui: "Thank you for coming today, Kenta-kun."
Yui: "This meant a lot to us."
Kenta: "It meant a lot to me too."
Sui: (hesitating) "Kenta-kun... can I ask you something?"
Kenta: "What?"
Sui: "When we were kids... did you ever think about the future? About us?"
Kenta: (thinking) "I thought about problems. Equations. How to help my family."
Yui: "But not us?"
Kenta: (pause) "I thought about you. Both of you. Wondered where you were. If you were happy."
Sui: (tearing up) "Kenta-kun..."
Kenta: "I didn't have words for it then. I don't have words for it now. But you were always there. In the back of my mind."
Yui: (also tearing up) "We were always thinking about you too."
Sui: "Always."
Kenta: (looking at them both) "We're here now. That's what matters."
Sui: (nodding) "Yeah."
Yui: (nodding) "Yeah."
---
[Scene: The Walk Home]
(They walk together toward the station.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun... can we do this again? Come back here?"
Kenta: "If you want."
Yui: "We want! Regular childhood memory visits!"
Sui: "Make new memories too!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "Okay."
(They reach the station.)
Sui: "Same time tomorrow? Library?"
Kenta: "I'll be there."
Yui: "We'll bring snacks!"
Sui: "And memories!"
(They wave and head to their platform.)
Kenta: (standing there) (muttering) "Childhood friends. Childhood park. Childhood ice cream."
(He touches his cheek. No kisses today. Just memories.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Different. But good different."
(He walks home, the photograph in his pocket feeling heavier. But in a good way.)
---
[Scene: Kenta's Room - Night]
(He places the photograph back on his desk. Looks at it one more time.)
Kenta: (muttering) "The Brave Queen. The Cheerful Princess. The Math King."
(He almost laughs.)
Kenta: "We've grown up."
(He picks up his pen. Looks at the problems waiting.)
Kenta: "But some things never change."
(He works. But he's smiling.)
