Chapter 16: The Night Sky Speaks
[Scene: Kenta's Room - Late Afternoon]
(Kenta sits at his desk, but he's not working. He's staring out the window at the clear sky. His phone is in his hand. On his desk, next to his papers, lies an old brass instrument. Worn. Tarnished. Beautiful.)
Kenta: (thinking) "No clouds. Perfect visibility tonight. The temperature is dropping, but the air is stable."
(He looks at the astrolabe. Touches it gently.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Father... tonight is clear. I'll use it well."
(He picks up his phone. Opens the group chat. Types. Deletes. Types again. Deletes.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Why is this difficult? It's just an observation request."
(He finally types and sends before he can overthink.)
Kenta: "The sky is clear tonight. Sunset in 30 minutes. Come to the school gate. Bring warm clothes."
(Immediate replies:)
Sui: "KENTA-KUN! ARE WE GOING SOMEWHERE?! "
Yui: "Sunset?! With you?! WE'LL BE THERE!"
Sui: "WARM CLOTHES! GOT IT!"
Yui: "THIS IS LIKE A DATE INVITATION!"
Sui: "YUI DON'T SAY THAT NOW I'M NERVOUS!"
Yui: "TOO LATE WE'RE BOTH NERVOUS NOW!"
Kenta: (staring at the chaos) (almost smiling) "...Just come."
(He looks back at the astrolabe. Picks it up carefully. Wraps it in a soft cloth.)
Kenta: (thinking) "They should see this. They should know."
---
[Scene: School Gate - Sunset]
(The sky is painted in shades of orange, pink, and purple. Sui and Yui arrive, bundled in warm coats, scarves, and gloves.)
Sui: (running up) "KENTA-KUN! WE'RE HERE!"
Yui: (also running) "What's the plan?!"
Kenta: (already waiting, a wrapped bundle under his arm) "You came."
Sui: (pouting) "Of course we came! You asked!"
Yui: (grinning) "We'd come anywhere for you!"
Kenta: (ears red) "Follow me."
(He leads them away from the school, toward a path they've never taken before.)
Sui: "Where are we going?"
Kenta: "A hill near my hostel. No city lights. Perfect for observing."
Yui: (looking up) "Observing? Like... stars?"
Kenta: (nodding) "The night will be clear. Rare for January. I wanted to show you."
Sui: (grabbing his hand) "Then let's go!"
Yui: (grabbing his other hand) "Lead the way, genius!"
Sui: (noticing the bundle) "Kenta-kun, what's that? You're holding it so carefully."
Kenta: (pause) "I'll show you when we get there."
---
[Scene: The Hill - Dusk]
(By the time they reach the hill, the sunset is in full glory. The town lights flicker on below. Above, the first stars begin to appear.)
Sui: (gasping) "Oh my god... the view..."
Yui: (also gasping) "It's beautiful!"
Kenta: (looking at the horizon) "The sunset colors are from Rayleigh scattering. Shorter wavelengths scatter more, leaving the reds and oranges."
Sui: (laughing) "Only you would explain a sunset with science!"
Kenta: "Science makes it more beautiful."
Yui: (leaning on his arm) "Everything is more beautiful with you."
Kenta: (ears red) "The stars will be even better."
(They watch the last colors fade. The sky darkens. Stars emerge one by one.)
Sui: (whispering) "They're coming out so fast..."
Yui: (also whispering) "Like someone's turning on lights."
Kenta: "Sit down. I'll show you something special."
(They sit on the grass. Sui on his left. Yui on his right. Kenta unwraps the bundle carefully.)
---
[Scene: The Astrolabe]
(The brass instrument gleams in the starlight. Old. Beautiful. Mysterious.)
Sui: (gasping) "What IS that?!"
Yui: (leaning closer) "It looks ancient!"
Kenta: (holding it gently) "It's an astrolabe."
Sui: "Astro... what?"
Kenta: "Astrolabe. An ancient tool for solving problems related to time and the position of the stars. Before telescopes, before modern clocks, this is how people understood the sky."
Yui: (awed) "It's so beautiful..."
Kenta: (quietly) "It was my father's."
Sui: (looking at him) "Your father?"
Kenta: (nodding) "He was an astronomer. Not a professional. He didn't have the degrees or the university position. But he loved the stars more than anything."
Yui: (softly) "Kenta-kun..."
Kenta: "He worked odd jobs during the day. At night, he would come to places like this. With this astrolabe. And he would teach me."
(He traces the engravings with his finger.)
Kenta: "He said the stars don't care if you're rich or poor. They shine for everyone equally."
Sui: (tearing up) "That's beautiful."
Kenta: "He died when I was twelve. We had nothing. But he left me this."
Yui: (grabbing his hand) "Kenta-kun... thank you for sharing this with us."
Sui: (grabbing his other hand) "This is so special."
Kenta: (ears red) "I wanted you to see it. To see what he taught me."
---
[Scene: Using the Astrolabe]
Kenta: (holding it up) "Watch."
(He adjusts the rings. Lines up a sighting. Looks through.)
Kenta: "This measures the altitude of stars. Their height above the horizon."
Sui: (mesmerized) "How does it work?"
Kenta: "See this ring? It's the horizon. This moving part is the rete—it maps the brightest stars. When I align it properly, I can tell the time. The date. Even predict where stars will be."
Yui: (amazed) "And your father taught you all this?"
Kenta: (nodding) "Every clear night. From when I was five."
Sui: (quietly) "He must have loved you very much."
Kenta: (pause) "He did. And he loved the stars. Now I love them too."
Yui: (leaning on his shoulder) "We love watching you love them."
Kenta: (almost smiling) "Do you want to try?"
Sui & Yui: (in unison) "YES!"
(He shows them how to hold it. How to look through. Sui gasps.)
Sui: "I see Jupiter! It's tiny but I see it!"
Kenta: "My father's astrolabe. Seeing the same stars he saw."
Yui: (taking a turn) "This is incredible... I feel like an ancient astronomer!"
Kenta: (watching them) (thinking) "Father... they're using your astrolabe. They're happy."
(His chest aches. But in a good way.)
---
[Scene: The Moving Earth]
Sui: (handing back the astrolabe) "Kenta-kun... how do we know the Earth moves? It feels so still."
Kenta: (looking at the stars through the astrolabe) "That's what everyone believed for thousands of years. That the Earth was the center of everything."
Yui: "But it's not?"
Kenta: "No. The Earth rotates on its axis. That's why stars appear to move across the sky. And it revolves around the Sun. That's why we see different constellations in different seasons."
Sui: (thinking) "But if the Earth is moving... why don't we feel it?"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "That's exactly what people asked 500 years ago. A scholar once explained it to a young boy."
Yui: "What did he say?"
Kenta: "Imagine you're on a ship. Moving smoothly. Do you feel the motion? No. You only feel it when the ship changes speed or direction. The Earth moves at constant speed. We don't feel it."
Sui: (eyes wide) "That makes sense!"
Kenta: "But back then, saying that could get you burned at the stake."
Yui: (horrified) "Burned?! For saying the Earth moves?!"
Kenta: (nodding) "The Church believed geocentrism. That Earth was the center. To say otherwise was heresy. People died for this knowledge."
Sui: (grabbing his hand tighter) "That's terrible..."
Kenta: "But they kept searching. Kept observing. Kept believing in truth."
(He points to the eastern horizon through the astrolabe.)
Kenta: "See that bright one? Rising now?"
Yui: "Venus?"
Kenta: (surprised) "How did you know?"
Yui: (grinning) "I remember! You told us about Venus before! The evening star!"
Kenta: (ears red) "You... remembered."
Sui: (smiling) "We remember everything you tell us, Kenta-kun."
---
[Scene: The Story of the Boy Who Tripped]
Sui: "Kenta-kun... tell us more about those people. The ones who died for the truth."
Kenta: (holding the astrolabe) "There's a story. About a boy. Gifted. Expected to study theology."
Yui: "Like you?"
Kenta: (pause) "Like me. He met a scholar. A heretic. The scholar told him the Earth moves."
Sui: (leaning in) "What happened?"
Kenta: "The boy didn't believe it at first. He argued. Gave reasons why it couldn't be true."
Yui: "Like what?"
Kenta: "He said: If the Earth moves, why don't we feel it? Why does an object thrown straight up land in the same place?"
Sui: "Those are good questions!"
Kenta: "The scholar didn't have all the answers. But he believed. On intuition."
(He pauses. Looks at the stars through the astrolabe.)
Kenta: "One night, walking home, the boy tripped. Fell. And as he fell, he saw the stars. The mountains. Everything seemed to move around him."
Yui: (whispering) "And then?"
Kenta: "He realized. If you're falling... if everything around you seems to move... maybe the Earth really does move. And we're all falling together. Through space. Around the Sun."
Sui: (quietly) "That's beautiful."
Kenta: "The boy dedicated his life to the truth after that. Even knowing the danger."
Yui: "Did he survive?"
Kenta: "I don't know. The story doesn't say. But his search for truth... that's what matters."
Sui: (looking at him) "You're like that boy, Kenta-kun. And your father was like the scholar."
Kenta: (surprised) "What?"
Sui: "He taught you to look up. To question. To seek truth. Even though he had nothing."
Yui: "He gave you everything that matters."
Kenta: (looking at the astrolabe, eyes wet) "He did."
Sui: (kissing his cheek) "And now you share it with us."
Yui: (kissing his other cheek) "That's the greatest gift."
Kenta: (touching his cheeks) "Two more."
---
[Scene: More Stars Revealed]
(They look up again. More stars have appeared.)
Kenta: (using the astrolabe) "See those seven stars in a line? That's part of Orion."
Yui: "The hunter?"
Kenta: (nodding) "The three in the middle are his belt. Above that, his shoulders. Below, his knees."
Sui: (tracing with her finger) "I see it! A person shape!"
Kenta: "And that bright one on his shoulder? Betelgeuse. A red supergiant. It could explode as a supernova any time."
Yui: (worried) "Explode?! Will it hurt us?!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "It's 600 light years away. If it exploded tonight, we wouldn't see it for 600 years."
Sui: (relieved) "Oh. So we're safe."
Kenta: "Safe. And lucky. We might be the generation that sees it."
Yui: (starry-eyed) "We'll watch it together. Right?"
Kenta: (looking at her, then at the astrolabe) "Together."
Sui: (grabbing his hand) "Promise?"
Kenta: (squeezing back) "Promise."
---
[Scene: The Pleiades]
Sui: (pointing) "What's that fuzzy one? Over there?"
Kenta: (measuring with the astrolabe) "The Pleiades. Seven sisters. A star cluster."
(He hands her the astrolabe.)
Kenta: "Look through here. You'll see them better."
Sui: (peeking) "Oh my god... there ARE seven! Tiny little dots!"
Yui: (taking a turn) "They look like diamonds on velvet!"
Kenta: (watching them) "In some cultures, they represent unity. Seven points of light that move together."
Sui: (looking at him) "Like us."
Kenta: (confused) "There are two of you."
Yui: (grinning) "We're the two sisters!"
Sui: "The chaotic sisters!"
Kenta: (almost laughing) "That's accurate."
---
[Scene: The Temperature Drops]
(The night grows colder. Sui shivers despite the scarf.)
Kenta: (noticing) "We should head back."
Sui: "But the stars!"
Yui: "Just a little longer?"
Kenta: (looking at the astrolabe, then at them) "Five more minutes."
Sui & Yui: (in unison) "YES!"
(They lean against him. His arms wrap around them instinctively. The astrolabe rests in his lap.)
Sui: (quietly) "Kenta-kun... thank you for sharing your father's astrolabe with us."
Yui: (also quietly) "We feel like we know him a little now."
Kenta: (looking at the stars) "He would have liked you."
Sui: (looking up) "Really?"
Kenta: "He always said the best people are the ones who look up. Who wonder. Who ask questions."
Yui: "We're not very good at questions."
Kenta: (almost smiling) "You're good at asking the right ones."
Sui: (snuggling closer) "Kenta-kun..."
Yui: (doing the same) "Our Kenta-kun."
---
[Scene: Walking Back]
(They walk down the hill, hands held, stars still visible above. Kenta carries the astrolabe carefully.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun... will you bring the astrolabe again?"
Kenta: "If you want."
Yui: "We want! We want to learn more!"
Sui: "We want to see everything through your father's eyes."
Kenta: (pause) "He would have loved that."
(They reach the bottom of the hill. The town lights are bright again.)
Sui: (stopping) "Kenta-kun... one more thing before we go?"
Kenta: "What?"
Sui: (standing on tiptoes) "For your father."
(She kisses his lips. Soft. Warm.)
Yui: (also on tiptoes) "For teaching us to look up."
(She kisses him too.)
Kenta: (touching his lips, holding the astrolabe) "Two more. For him."
Sui: (grinning through tears) "He's watching, isn't he?"
Kenta: (looking at the stars) "I think so."
Yui: (also tearing up) "Then he knows. He knows you're not alone anymore."
Kenta: (quietly) "Yeah."
(They walk to the gate. Sui and Yui live in opposite directions tonight.)
Sui: "Same time tomorrow?"
Kenta: "I have problems to solve."
Yui: (pouting) "Kenta-kun!"
Kenta: (pause) "...But I can take a break. For sunset."
Sui: (jumping) "YES!"
Yui: (also jumping) "SUNSET DATE CONFIRMED!"
Kenta: "I didn't say date."
Sui: "YOU DIDN'T SAY IT WASN'T!"
Yui: "LOOPHOLE!"
(They run off, laughing.)
Kenta: (standing there, touching his lips, looking at the astrolabe, then at the stars)
Kenta: (thinking) "Father... I found them. The people who look up with me."
(He holds the astrolabe to his chest.)
Kenta: (thinking) "I'm not alone anymore."
(He walks home, smiling.)
---
[Scene: Kenta's Room - Night]
(He places the astrolabe carefully on his desk. Looks at it. Then at the stars through his window.)
(His phone buzzes. Two messages.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun! Tonight was perfect! The astrolabe, the stories, the kisses! Thank you for sharing your father with us! We'll treasure it forever! "
Yui: "My prince~ you gave us the stars tonight. But more than that, you gave us your heart. Your father's heart. We'll protect it always. "Goodnight!"
Kenta: (smiling, eyes wet) (typing back to both): "Goodnight. Thank you for looking up with me. For listening. For being there. My father would have loved you. Tonight meant everything."
(Immediate replies:)
Sui: "HE SAID WE MEAN EVERYTHING! "
Yui: "KENTA-KUN IS GETTING SO EMOTIONAL! PROGRESS! "
Sui: "SWEET DREAMS OUR STARGAZER!"
Yui: "DREAM OF US! (UNDER THE STARS!) "
Kenta: (putting down the phone) (looking at the astrolabe, then at the stars)
Kenta: (thinking) "Father... I found them. The people who look up with me."
(He holds the astrolabe gently.)
Kenta: (thinking) "I'm not alone anymore."
(He closes his eyes, smiling.)
Kenta: (thinking) "We're all falling together. Through space. Around the Sun. And I'm not falling alone."
(He falls asleep, happy.)
