Volume 2: Chapter 5 – Three Under One Roof

[Scene: Kenta's Room - Evening]
(Kenta is at his desk, working on problems. Sui and Yui are on his bed, whispering to each other. This has been going on for twenty minutes.)
Kenta: (without turning) "You're whispering very loudly."
Sui: (jumping) "WE WEREN'T—I MEAN—"
Yui: (also jumping) "NOTHING! JUST GIRL TALK!"
Kenta: (turning) "You've been 'girl talking' for twenty minutes. While staring at me."
Sui: (face red) "We... we have a question."
Yui: (also red) "A big question."
Kenta: (curious) "What is it?"
Sui: (taking a deep breath) "Kenta-kun... what if... we lived together?"
Kenta: (freezing) "What?"
Yui: (rushing out) "All three of us! In this room! Well, maybe a bigger place eventually! But for now, here! Together!"
Sui: "We're always here anyway. We sleep over all the time. We eat together. We study together. We're basically already living here."
Yui: "So why not make it official?"
Kenta: (processing) "You want to... move in? With me?"
Sui: (nodding) "Both of us."
Yui: (also nodding) "Together. With you."
Kenta: (long pause) "Your families?"
Sui: "We haven't asked them yet."
Yui: "We wanted to ask YOU first."
Kenta: (thinking) "They want to live with me. Both of them. In this tiny room."
Kenta: (aloud) "This room is very small."
Sui: "We'll fit!"
Yui: "We always fit!"
Kenta: "There's only one bed."
Sui: (grinning) "We know!"
Yui: (also grinning) "We've shared it before!"
Kenta: (ears red) "That was different."
Sui: "Was it?"
Kenta: "..."
Yui: (softening) "Kenta-kun. We want to be with you. All the time. Not just after school. Not just on weekends. Every morning. Every night."
Sui: (tearing up) "We want to wake up next to you. Make breakfast with you. Fall asleep with you."
Yui: (also tearing up) "We want to be a real family."
Kenta: (quietly) "Family?"
Sui: (nodding) "You, us, together. That's family."
(Kenta looks at them. At their hopeful faces. At the tears forming in their eyes.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Family. I haven't had that since Father died."
(He remembers. Flashback.)

[Flashback: 5 Years Ago - Kenta Age 12]
(A small house. Kenta sits alone at a table. His father's chair is empty. His mother is in the kitchen, crying quietly.)
Young Kenta: (staring at a math problem) "If I solve this, will he come back?"
(He solves it. No one comes.)
Young Kenta: (whispering) "I don't want to be alone anymore."

[End Flashback]
Kenta: (looking at Sui and Yui) "You really want this?"
Sui: (firmly) "More than anything."
Yui: (firmly) "We've never wanted anything more."
Kenta: (long pause) "Then yes."
Sui: (eyes widening) "YES?!"
Yui: (also widening) "YOU SAID YES?!"
Kenta: (ears red) "But you have to ask your families first. Properly."
Sui: (jumping) "WE WILL!"
Yui: (also jumping) "TODAY! RIGHT NOW!"
(They tackle him. Hug. Kiss his cheeks. Both sides.)
Sui: "WE'RE GOING TO LIVE TOGETHER!"
Yui: "OUR KENTA-KUN!"
Kenta: (trapped, smiling) "You haven't gotten permission yet."
Sui: "WE WILL! THEY'LL SAY YES!"
Yui: "THEY HAVE TO!"
Kenta: (thinking) "Family. I'll have a family again."

[Scene: Sui's House - That Evening]
(Sui sits across from her parents. Nervous. Hands shaking.)
Sui's Mom: (concerned) "Sui, what's wrong? You look terrified."
Sui's Dad: "Did you break something?"
Sui: (taking a deep breath) "Mom. Dad. I need to ask you something. Important."
Sui's Mom: "What is it, sweetie?"
Sui: "I want to move in with Kenta Morik."
(Silence.)
Sui's Dad: (slowly) "The genius boy? The one who won the Olympiad?"
Sui: (nodding) "Him. And Yui too. All three of us. Together."
Sui's Mom: (blinking) "All three of you?"
Sui: "We love him, Mom. Both of us. And he loves us. We want to be a family."
Sui's Dad: (long pause) "Sui... this is... unexpected."
Sui: (tearing up) "I know it's sudden. But we've thought about it for so long. We're always at his place anyway. We eat together. Sleep over. Study together. It just makes sense."
Sui's Mom: (looking at her husband) "Dear?"
Sui's Dad: (sighing) "Sui. Is he good to you?"
Sui: (firmly) "He's the best. He's kind. Gentle. Smart. He makes us happy."
Sui's Dad: "And he's okay with both of you? At the same time?"
Sui: "He loves us equally. He said so. In front of the whole school."
Sui's Mom: (softening) "I remember. The confession. It was beautiful."
Sui's Dad: (thinking) "This is highly irregular."
Sui: (crying now) "Please, Dad. Please, Mom. I've never asked for anything like this. But I need this. I need him. I need them."
Sui's Mom: (reaching for her husband's hand) "Dear... she's never been this sure about anything."
Sui's Dad: (long, long pause) "...If he hurts you, I'll kill him."
Sui: (eyes widening) "DAD?!"
Sui's Dad: "That's my condition. He takes care of you. Both of you. And if he doesn't, I'll find him."
Sui: (sobbing, hugging him) "THANK YOU! THANK YOU!"
Sui's Mom: (smiling, crying too) "We'll visit. Often. And you come home for dinners."
Sui: (nodding frantically) "YES! EVERY WEEK! PROMISE!"

[Scene: Yui's House - Same Time]
(Yui sits with her mother. Her father stands behind, arms crossed.)
Yui's Mom: "Yui, this is... a lot to process."
Yui: (nervous) "I know, Mom. I know. But I love him. I've loved him since we were kids."
Yui's Dad: "The sandbox boy?"
Yui: (nodding) "The same one. He gave me his ice cream when I dropped mine. He caught me on the slide. He waited for me all these years."
Yui's Mom: (tearing up) "You've talked about him since you were little. 'Kenta-kun this, Kenta-kun that.'"
Yui: (laughing through tears) "I never stopped."
Yui's Dad: "And the other girl? Sui?"
Yui: "She's like a sister to me now. We love him together. It works. I promise it works."
Yui's Dad: (sighing) "Yui... are you sure?"
Yui: (firmly) "More sure than anything in my life."
Yui's Mom: (grabbing her husband's arm) "Dear... look at her. She's never been this happy."
Yui's Dad: (long pause) "...He has to pass my test."
Yui: (confused) "Test?"
Yui's Dad: "I'll talk to him. Man to man. If he passes, you can go."
Yui: (hugging him) "HE WILL! I KNOW HE WILL!"
Yui's Dad: (holding her) "And if he doesn't..."
Yui: (pulling back) "He will, Dad. Trust me."

[Scene: Kenta's Room - Next Day]
(Kenta's phone buzzes. Group chat.)
Sui: "KENTA-KUN! MY PARENTS SAID YES! "
Yui: "MINE TOO! But my dad wants to talk to you!"
Sui: "MY DAD THREATENED TO KILL YOU IF YOU HURT US!"
Kenta: (staring) "That's... intense."
Yui: "Can you meet my dad tomorrow?"
Kenta: "Yes."
Sui: "AND MY PARENTS WANT DINNER NEXT WEEK!"
Kenta: "Okay."
Yui: "YOU'RE NOT SCARED?!"
Kenta: "I solved the unsolvable problem. I can talk to parents."
Sui: "THAT'S OUR BOYFRIEND! "
Yui: "SO CONFIDENT! SO HOT!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "I'll do my best."

[Scene: Yui's House - Meeting the Father]
(Kenta sits across from Yui's father. Tea on the table. Silence.)
Yui's Dad: (studying him) "You're the genius."
Kenta: "I solve problems."
Yui's Dad: "Yui is my only daughter. My treasure."
Kenta: "I know."
Yui's Dad: "She's loved you since she was seven. Talked about you for years after you moved."
Kenta: (quietly) "I didn't know."
Yui's Dad: "Of course you didn't. She was too shy to say anything. But she never forgot you."
Kenta: "I never forgot her either. Or Sui."
Yui's Dad: (leaning forward) "Two girls. At the same time. How does that work?"
Kenta: (thinking) "I don't have a formula for it. I just know that when I'm with them, I'm whole. I love them equally. Completely. There's no competition. No favorites. Just... us."
Yui's Dad: (long pause) "You're different from other boys."
Kenta: "I know."
Yui's Dad: (almost smiling) "You don't brag. You don't posture. You just... are."
Kenta: "Pretending takes energy. I'd rather solve problems."
Yui's Dad: (laughing) "I like you, kid."
Kenta: (surprised) "Really?"
Yui's Dad: "Take care of my daughter. Both of them. And if you ever hurt them..."
Kenta: "You'll kill me. Sui's dad already threatened that."
Yui's Dad: (grinning) "Good. We're on the same page."
(He extends his hand. Kenta shakes it.)
Yui's Dad: "Welcome to the family, son."
Kenta: (quietly) "Thank you."

[Scene: Kenta's Room - Moving Day]
(Three weeks later. The room has been rearranged. A bunk bed now. Sui on top. Yui on bottom. Kenta on a small cot in the corner? No—they insisted he take the bottom bunk with Yui. Sui above.)
Sui: (from top bunk) "Kenta-kun! Can you see me?!"
Kenta: (looking up) "Yes."
Sui: (grinning) "Good! Now you can look at me whenever you want!"
Yui: (beside him on bottom bunk) "And I get to sleep next to you!"
Kenta: (ears red) "This is... different."
Yui: (snuggling against him) "Good different?"
Kenta: "...Good different."
(Flashback.)

[Flashback: 10 Years Ago - Age 7]
(Three children in a sandbox. Young Kenta. Young Sui. Young Yui.)
Young Sui: "Kenta-kun! When we grow up, let's live together!"
Young Kenta: (confused) "Why?"
Young Yui: "Because we're best friends! Best friends should live together!"
Young Sui: "We'll have bunk beds! And eat together! And play every day!"
Young Yui: "And Kenta-kun can do math while we watch!"
Young Kenta: (thinking) "That sounds... nice."
Young Kenta: (aloud) "Okay. When we grow up."
Young Sui: "PROMISE?!"
Young Kenta: "Promise."
Young Yui: (hugging him) "YAY!"
(Young Kenta's ears turn red. But he doesn't pull away.)

[End Flashback]
Kenta: (looking at Yui beside him, Sui above) "We kept our promise."
Sui: (leaning over) "What promise?"
Kenta: "Ten years ago. In the sandbox. You said we should live together when we grow up."
Yui: (eyes widening) "You REMEMBER that?!"
Kenta: "I remember everything."
Sui: (crawling down to join them) "SCOOT OVER!"
(She squeezes onto the bottom bunk. Three of them now. Tight. Warm.)
Sui: (snuggling) "We're really doing this."
Yui: (also snuggling) "Living together."
Kenta: (between them) "Together."
Sui: "Kenta-kun?"
Kenta: "Hm?"
Sui: "Thank you. For saying yes."
Yui: "For loving us."
Kenta: (quietly) "Thank you for loving me."
(They hold each other. Three hearts beating as one.)
Sui: (drowsy) "Goodnight, Kenta-kun."
Yui: (also drowsy) "Goodnight, our prince."
Kenta: (looking at them, then at the ceiling) "Goodnight."
(He closes his eyes. Smiling.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Father... I have a family again."

[Scene: Morning - First Day Living Together]
(Kenta wakes up. Sui is draped across his chest. Yui is curled against his side. Both asleep. Both peaceful.)
Kenta: (thinking) "This is my life now."
(He doesn't move. Doesn't want to.)
Sui: (stirring) "Mmm... morning..."
Yui: (also stirring) "Five more minutes..."
Kenta: (quietly) "We have school."
Sui: (groaning) "School can wait."
Yui: (nodding against him) "This is more important."
Kenta: (almost laughing) "You're both impossible."
Sui: (opening one eye) "Your impossible."
Yui: (opening one eye) "Forever."
(They snuggle closer. Kenta gives up. Stays in bed.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Some problems don't need solving. Some problems are perfect just as they are."

[Scene: Kitchen - Breakfast]
(They cook together. Sui burns toast. Yui perfectly fries eggs. Kenta makes tea.)
Sui: (pouting) "Why does my toast always burn?!"
Yui: (giggling) "Because you're distracted by Kenta-kun!"
Sui: (face red) "AM NOT!"
Kenta: (handing her fresh toast) "Here."
Sui: (melting) "He makes me toast..."
Yui: "He makes us ALL toast!"
Sui: "OUR toast!"
(They eat together. Laughing. Talking. Planning the day.)
Kenta: (thinking) "This is what I missed. This is what I always wanted."
(Flashback.)

[Flashback: 8 Years Ago - Age 9]
(Young Kenta eats alone. Rice. Pickles. No one across from him.)
Young Kenta: (staring at empty chair) "I wish someone was here."
(He eats in silence. Alone.)

Yui: (noticing his expression) "Kenta-kun? You okay?"
Kenta: (snapping out of it) "Yes. Just... happy."
Sui: (tearing up) "He's happy! Because of us!"
Yui: (also tearing up) "OUR KENTA-KUN IS HAPPY!"
Kenta: (ears red) "Eat your breakfast."
Sui: (kissing his cheek) "For happiness!"
Yui: (kissing his other cheek) "For family!"
Kenta: (touching his cheeks) "Two more."
Sui: (grinning) "Count them all!"
Yui: (also grinning) "New record every day!"

[Scene: School - Walking Together]
(They walk to school. Three together. Hands held. Smiling.)
Student 1: "Look, the trio."
Student 2: "They're always together now."
Student 3: "Living the dream."
Sui: (smug) "We ARE living the dream."
Yui: (also smug) "The best dream."
Kenta: (between them) "You're both very smug."
Sui: "We earned it!"
Yui: "Years of waiting!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "Fair."

[Scene: Kenta's Room - Night]
(Four items on the desk. Father's astrolabe. Competition trophy. Professor's medal. Olympiad gold medal.)
(And now, three photos. One of Sui. One of Yui. One of all three together at the beach.)
Kenta: (looking at them) "Four items. Three photos. Two girls. One family."
(His phone buzzes. Group chat? No. They're right here.)
Sui: (from the bed) "Kenta-kun, come to bed!"
Yui: (also from bed) "We're waiting!"
Kenta: (smiling) "Coming."
(He joins them. Three in the bottom bunk. Tight. Warm. Perfect.)
Sui: (drowsy) "Kenta-kun..."
Kenta: "Hm?"
Sui: "Thank you for letting us stay."
Yui: (also drowsy) "For being our home."
Kenta: (quietly) "You ARE my home."
Sui & Yui: (in unison, barely awake) "Love you..."
Kenta: (closing his eyes) "Love you both."
(He falls asleep. Surrounded. Safe. Loved.)
Kenta: (thinking, last thought) "Father... I'm not alone anymore."
