Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: A night spent in warmth

The fire burned lower as evening settled over the valley.

Outside, the sky slowly shifted from gold to deep blue, and the first stars began appearing through gaps in the broken roof of the old grocery store. The wind had quieted, leaving the world strangely calm.

Inside, the small group sat comfortably around the barrel fire.

Sam stretched his arms above his head with a tired groan.

"Alright… if I sit here any longer I'm definitely falling asleep sitting up."

Daniel yawned loudly in agreement.

Lily rubbed her eyes, trying to stay awake but clearly losing the battle.

Elena looked at the two children and then back at Sam.

"We should prepare somewhere to sleep."

Sam nodded and stood up slowly.

His muscles still protested from the earlier battle with the stone golem, but his body had recovered enough to move comfortably again.

"Yeah. Let's make something decent."

He grabbed a lantern and began searching through the back rooms of the store.

A few minutes later his voice echoed from deeper inside the building.

"Hey! Jackpot!"

Elena followed the sound and found him inside what used to be a small staff break room and storage area.

Old supply cabinets lined the walls.

But the real prize sat stacked in the corner.

Large soft pillows and folded blankets, probably leftover stock from before the war.

Sam grinned.

"Looks like someone was planning to sell these before the world ended."

Daniel immediately dove into the pile.

"This is amazing!"

Lily laughed softly as she helped pull some of the blankets free.

Sam carried armfuls of pillows back to the main room, stacking them together to create a wide, comfortable nest near the warmth of the fire.

Soon the cold concrete floor was covered with layers of blankets and pillows.

It looked surprisingly cozy.

Elena watched with a small smile.

"You're very good at making camps."

Sam shrugged.

"Years of practice."

After a moment Elena gestured toward the back hallway.

"There's still running water in the staff washroom. It's cold, but it works."

Sam blinked.

"…A bath?"

She nodded.

"We should clean up before sleeping."

Daniel pumped his fist.

"YES."

Even Lily seemed excited by the idea.

A little while later they carefully took turns using the small staff bathroom.

The water was cold, but after weeks of survival in ruined cities it still felt refreshing.

Dust, dried blood, and sweat finally washed away.

When Sam returned to the main room wearing fresh clothes from his pack, he found the fire burning softly and the bedding fully arranged.

Elena was kneeling beside the blankets adjusting one corner.

She looked up when he approached.

For a moment they simply looked at each other in the warm firelight.

Then she spoke softly.

"We should probably all sleep together tonight."

Sam raised an eyebrow slightly.

Elena immediately added, her cheeks turning faintly pink.

"I mean for... For safety reasons...."

She gestured toward the dark windows.

"Monsters tend to roam more at night now… and it's safer if we stay close together."

Sam gave a small amused smirk.

"Of course."

Elena cleared her throat and quickly turned away to help the kids climb into the large pile of blankets.

Soon the four of them settled down into the soft nest of pillows.

Daniel curled up on one side of Sam.

Lily tucked herself beneath a blanket near Elena.

The fire crackled quietly nearby.

The warmth spread gently through the room.

Sam leaned back into the pillows with a long exhale.

"Man… this is luxury compared to most of my camps."

Elena laughed quietly.

"You must have had some rough nights then."

Sam looked toward the ceiling.

"Yeah… a few."

For a while they simply listened to the fire.

Outside, the distant wind moved softly across the valley.

Gradually the conversation faded.

Daniel fell asleep first.

Then Lily.

The warmth of the blankets and the exhaustion of the day slowly pulled the adults toward sleep as well.

At some point during the night, without really thinking about it, Elena shifted slightly closer.

Sam's arm rested loosely around her shoulders.

Her head settled gently against his chest.

The children had moved closer too during their sleep, seeking warmth and comfort.

No one said anything.

They were already asleep.

Under the thick blankets, surrounded by soft pillows and the quiet glow of the fire, the small group rested together peacefully.

Night settled deeply over the ruined valley.

The fire in the metal barrel had burned down to glowing orange embers, filling the room with a gentle warmth that mixed with the faint smell of wood smoke and clean blankets. Outside, the wind had almost completely faded, leaving the world quiet except for the occasional distant creak of ruined buildings shifting in the cool night air.

The large nest of pillows and blankets

Sam had built looked like a small island of comfort in the middle of the abandoned store.

Daniel and Lily were already deeply asleep.

Daniel had rolled onto his side, clutching one of the soft pillows like a treasure, while Lily slept quietly beneath a thick blanket with her hair spread across the pillow.

Beside them, Elena slept peacefully as well.

At some point during the night, her body had shifted closer to Sam without her realizing it. The warmth coming from him, both from his naturally strong body and the faint magical energy that always seemed to linger around him, had drawn her toward him like a comfortable heat source in the cold world.

Still asleep, Elena pressed slightly closer.

Her breathing was slow and steady.

Her hand rested against Sam's stomach.

Without waking, her fingers slowly moved across the firm muscles of his abdomen as if searching for a comfortable resting place. The motion was slow and unconscious, the kind of small movement someone makes when deep in sleep.

Sam stirred slightly.

He wasn't fully asleep anymore.

Somewhere between dreaming and waking, he became aware of the soft movement.

Elena's body had moved closer during the night, her warmth pressed gently against his side.

One of her legs had lazily draped over his waist beneath the blankets, her body naturally settling against him for warmth.

Her hand still rested against his stomach.

For a moment Sam stayed still, listening to the quiet breathing of the sleeping group around him.

Then Elena murmured softly in her sleep.

Her voice was quiet and drowsy.

"…oh Sam… so strong…"

A soft sleepy sound escaped her before she settled again, her breathing evening out into a gentle snore.

Sam opened his eyes slightly.

For a moment he stared at the ceiling of the dark store.

Then he glanced down at the sleeping woman curled against him.

He couldn't help but smirk a little.

"Guess I'm the heater tonight," he whispered quietly to himself.

He didn't move her away.

Instead he shifted slightly into the pillows, adjusting just enough to make the position more comfortable for both of them.

The large pile of blankets and pillows made everything soft and warm, and Elena instinctively snuggled a little closer in response.
