Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 - The Prayer

The morning sun had barely risen when LilyCarter walked into the family bakery.

Her eyes were red from a sleepless night, but her hands were already busy.

She lifted the gas cylinder and shook it.

"Come on… don't give up now," she muttered.

After a moment, a thin stream of oil finally poured into the pan.

Soon the sound of sizzling filled the small shop.

Lily carefully poured spirals of batter into the hot oil.

Golden jalebis began forming in the pan.

One after another.

She fried them patiently, dipped them into sugar syrup, and placed them on a tray.

Then she picked one up and took a bite.

Sweet.

Hot.

Sticky.

Perfect.

Another one followed.

Then another.

By mid-morning, half the tray had disappeared.

Outside the shop, a few neighbors watched curiously.

"Poor girl," one woman whispered. "Whenever Lily gets upset, she makes sweets."

Another nodded knowingly.

"She must be heartbroken after what happened yesterday."

Lily simply continued frying.

The pan sizzled endlessly.

Across the city, at the luxurious CrystalManor, a very different morning was unfolding.

AdrianBlake sat beside the large swimming pool, eating breakfast.

A plate of parathas lay in front of him.

He frowned after the first bite.

"These are dry," he said sharply.

His assistant shifted nervously.

Adrian placed the fork down.

Then someone approached from behind.

"Good morning, Chot—"

Adrian turned instantly.

His sister AngelaBlake smiled warmly.

"Good morning, little brother."

Adrian sighed.

"Don't call me that."

Angela laughed softly and sat beside him.

"I heard you tried to book a flight for me to go back to New York this morning."

Adrian glanced at his assistant.

"You didn't book it?"

The assistant stammered.

"I… I did, sir. But Ms. Blake canceled it."

Angela folded her arms triumphantly.

"I'm not leaving yet."

Adrian frowned.

"You should go. You have work there."

Angela shook her head stubbornly.

"No."

Then she reminded him gently,

"You promised to fulfill my wish."

Adrian looked away.

"That was your wish."

Angela smiled sweetly.

"If you don't keep your promise, I'll sit on your head all day."

Adrian sighed deeply.

There was no winning with his sister.

"Fine," he said finally.

"I'll do what you want."

Then he added firmly,

"But you're still leaving this afternoon."

Angela watched him walk away, amused.

Her stubborn little brother clearly had something to hide.

Back at the Carter bakery, Lily was still frying jalebis.

And eating them.

One of the neighbors chuckled.

"She's been making them since last night."

At that moment RobertCarter walked into the shop.

He sat beside Lily quietly.

Without saying anything, he picked up a jalebi and fed it to her.

Lily looked at him with surprise.

"Dad…"

Robert smiled gently.

"Don't let yesterday break you."

His voice softened.

"I made a mistake."

Lily looked confused.

"I shouldn't have agreed to their dowry demands," he continued.

"No daughter of mine deserves a family like that."

He placed his hand on her head.

"Even if you're not my biological child," he said softly, "you are more than a daughter to me."

Tears filled Lily's eyes.

Robert continued,

"If you can look at yourself in the mirror without shame, then you chose the right path."

Lily's heart felt lighter for the first time since yesterday.

But the moment didn't last long.

A loud voice suddenly echoed from outside.

"Well, look at that!"

AuntMargaret stood in the street with her hands on her hips.

"So this is what you're doing after ruining your sister's wedding?"

Lily lowered her eyes silently.

Robert immediately stood up.

"Enough," he said firmly.

"She may have made a mistake, but her intention was right."

Margaret scoffed.

"Right? She ruined everything!"

Soon several neighbors gathered around.

But instead of blaming Lily, they surprised everyone.

Robert's elderly neighbor spoke up.

"He's right."

"No one should give dowry."

Another woman nodded.

"Robert did the right thing."

Margaret looked around in disbelief.

For the first time, she was outnumbered.

An old woman from the neighborhood stepped forward kindly.

"Why don't you all come to the shrine today?" she suggested.

"Pray for peace."

The Carter family exchanged glances.

Maybe that was exactly what they needed.

A short while later, both families were on the road.

Adrian Blake's sleek black car sped through the city.

His assistant sat beside him nervously.

"Sir, you have a meeting in fifteen minutes."

"I'll be there," Adrian replied calmly.

At the same time, the Carter family drove toward the same destination.

Halfway there—

Their car suddenly stopped.

The engine coughed and died.

Robert stepped out to inspect it.

Helen sighed dramatically.

"Our daughter's wedding just broke… and now the car too."

Robert shook his head patiently.

"These are two different problems."

Inside the car, Emily quietly held Lily's hand.

Trying to comfort her.

Lily stepped out and helped push the car forward.

Just then—

Adrian's car passed right behind them.

Neither noticed the other.

Moments later, the Carter car started again.

Both vehicles continued toward the same place.

The Sufishrine stood peacefully on a hill, filled with the sound of prayers and soft music.

People covered their heads respectfully before entering.

Inside, a holy man lightly tapped devotees with a broom as part of a blessing ritual.

The air smelled of incense and rose petals.

Lily and Emily entered together.

Outside, Robert tried convincing Helen to join them.

"Come pray," he said gently.

But inside the shrine, Lily was already whispering complaints to her sister.

"That arrogant man yesterday…" she muttered.

Emily frowned.

"Forget him."

"No way," Lily said stubbornly.

"One day I'll meet that spoiled governor again and teach him a lesson."

At that exact moment—

Adrian Blake entered the shrine.

Emily gently pulled Lily's scarf over her head.

"Cover your head."

Soft devotional music echoed around them.

Lily and Adrian unknowingly walked toward the prayer hall at the same time.

Parallel paths.

For a brief second, Lily's scarf slipped from her head and brushed across Adrian's face.

He paused.

Watching her walk away.

But his expression remained unreadable.

After offering prayers, Emily stepped aside to light candles.

Lily moved toward the wall where people tied threads to make wishes.

At the same moment, Adrian stood on the other side of the same wall.

Both tied a prayer thread.

Neither saw the other.

Lily whispered loudly,

"God… please make me meet that arrogant man again."

Emily turned around quickly.

"Lower your voice!"

But Lily continued anyway.

"And when I meet him, I'm definitely teaching him a lesson."

Meanwhile Adrian quietly placed a small lockofprayer on the shrine gate.

Lily did the same.

But her prayer was different.

"Please let Emily find a good man," she whispered sincerely.

Suddenly Adrian's key slipped from his hand and fell to the ground.

Lily noticed it immediately.

She picked it up and hurried after him.

"Hey! Your key!"

Adrian stopped.

And turned around.

For the first time since yesterday—

Their eyes met again.

Lily froze in shock.

"You!" she blurted.

Adrian looked completely indifferent.

"Throw it," he said calmly.

Then he turned and walked away.

Lily stared after him in disbelief.

"Again?!"

She clenched the key tightly and ran after him.

Weaving through the crowd, bumping into people along the way.

Somehow she reached ahead of him, breathless.

One of her sandals had slipped off, and she held it in her hand.

She quickly slipped it back on.

Adrian approached slowly.

Lily tried to catch her breath.

But as he stepped closer—

Her confidence suddenly disappeared.

For the first time, she felt a strange nervousness standing in front of him.

And the real confrontation between them was about to begin.
