Chapter 15 – The Shadow Market
After discovering the hidden staircase leading to the second floor, Ronan decided to retreat for now.
The deeper level of the dungeon felt far more dangerous than the goblin tunnels above.
Without proper preparation, going down there would be suicide.
For now, he needed resources.
Money.
And better equipment.
The night wind moved quietly through the broken buildings of the ruined district. The sky above was dark, covered with thick clouds that hid the moon. Only faint blue lights from the distant city walls illuminated the silent streets.
Ronan walked slowly across the cracked road.
His boots stepped over pieces of broken concrete and rusted metal. In his right hand, he held a small leather bag. Inside it were the monster hearts he had collected during the last few hunts.
Eight hearts.
Each one pulsed faintly with energy.
For ordinary hunters, monster hearts were valuable materials used for alchemy, energy cores, and equipment crafting. But for Ronan, they meant something more important.
Money.
And money meant resources.
And resources meant power.
Ronan stopped walking and looked toward the distant city gate.
The guard towers stood like silent giants against the dark sky.
"First step…" he muttered quietly. "Sell the hearts."
But he didn't plan to sell them at the normal hunter market.
Those places paid too little.
Instead, Ronan had another destination.
The Shadow Market.
A place where hunters, smugglers, and craftsmen traded rare materials without asking questions.
Ronan adjusted the bag on his shoulder and continued walking.
Inside his mind, the familiar blue screen of the System appeared.
---
System Interface
Host: Ronan
Level: 7
Energy: 142 / 200
Inventory:
Monster Heart ×8
Iron Dagger
Torn Hunter Armor
---
Ronan's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Still not enough…"
Even if he sold all eight hearts, it would only give him a few thousand credits.
That might be enough for weapons or armor.
But Ronan had something else in mind.
Something far more valuable.
A Spatial Ring.
A storage artifact that could hold items in a pocket dimension.
Hunters who owned one could carry large amounts of materials without attracting attention.
But such artifacts were extremely expensive.
Even the cheapest ones cost more than 50,000 credits.
Ronan looked at his hands.
"Which means… I need to start planning."
He walked for another twenty minutes before reaching a narrow alley hidden between two broken buildings.
A dim red lantern hung above a rusted metal door.
Ronan knocked twice.
Silence.
Then a small sliding window opened.
A pair of suspicious eyes looked at him.
"Password."
Ronan spoke calmly.
"Black moon."
The eyes studied him for a moment.
Then the door slowly opened.
"Get in."
---
The moment Ronan stepped inside, the atmosphere changed completely.
The alley behind the door opened into a large underground chamber.
Dim lights hung from the ceiling.
Stalls filled the space.
Hunters, merchants, and masked figures moved quietly between the tables.
Weapons.
Artifacts.
Monster materials.
Everything could be bought here… for the right price.
Ronan walked slowly through the market.
His eyes carefully observed everything.
This place was dangerous.
But it was also full of opportunities.
A merchant shouted from a nearby stall.
"Fresh poison glands! Perfect for crafting!"
Another man displayed glowing crystals.
"Energy stones from the outer zone! Limited stock!"
Ronan ignored them.
He headed toward a quieter corner where an older merchant sat behind a wooden table.
The man had gray hair and sharp eyes.
He looked up when Ronan approached.
"Young hunter," the merchant said slowly. "What are you selling?"
Ronan placed the leather bag on the table and opened it.
Eight monster hearts rolled onto the surface.
The merchant raised his eyebrows slightly.
"Hmm…"
He picked one up and examined it carefully.
"Goblin Warrior hearts."
Ronan nodded.
"Yes."
The merchant checked the others.
"All fresh."
He leaned back in his chair.
"I'll give you 12,000 credits."
Ronan didn't respond immediately.
He had expected that number.
But he also knew how these negotiations worked.
"Fifteen thousand."
The merchant laughed.
"You're ambitious."
"Fourteen."
The merchant tapped the table with his finger.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he sighed.
"Fine. Fourteen thousand."
He pulled out a small metal card and transferred the credits.
Transaction Complete.
Ronan placed the card into his pocket.
Good.
But it still wasn't enough for what he wanted.
As Ronan turned to leave, the merchant spoke again.
"Wait."
Ronan stopped.
"There's something else."
The old man leaned forward slightly.
"I have a job."
Ronan stayed silent.
The merchant continued.
"A hunter team was supposed to bring me something tonight."
"They didn't come back."
Ronan's eyes narrowed.
"What kind of job?"
The merchant lowered his voice.
"There's a mutated monster nest in Sector 9."
"They were hunting a rare creature there."
Ronan felt a small spark of interest.
Rare monsters meant rare materials.
And rare materials meant serious money.
"What creature?"
The merchant smiled slightly.
"A Shadow Fang Panther."
Ronan immediately understood the value.
Shadow Fang Panthers were extremely fast and dangerous.
But their hearts and fangs were highly valuable.
"Reward?" Ronan asked.
The merchant leaned back.
"If you bring me the heart… I'll pay 60,000 credits."
Ronan's eyes sharpened.
That was enough.
More than enough.
With that money, he could finally buy a Spatial Ring.
But he also knew something else.
Creatures like Shadow Fang Panthers were never alone.
Which meant the nest would be extremely dangerous.
For most hunters, it would be a suicide mission.
But Ronan was not most hunters.
The System window appeared again.
---
Quest Triggered

60,000 Credits
Bonus System Points

---
Ronan smiled faintly.
Perfect.
He looked at the merchant.
"I'll take the job."
The old man nodded.
"I expected that."
He slid a small map across the table.
"The nest is here."
Ronan studied the map carefully.
The location was deep inside the ruined industrial zone.
Far from the main patrol routes.
Which meant if something went wrong…
No one would come to help.
Ronan folded the map and placed it in his pocket.
"When do you want the heart?"
"Within three days."
Ronan nodded once.
Then he turned and walked toward the exit of the market.
The cool night air greeted him as he stepped back into the alley.
Above him, the clouds slowly moved across the sky.
Ronan looked toward the distant ruins.
"Shadow Fang Panther…"
A dangerous monster.
But also the key to his next step.
The key to becoming stronger.
He clenched his fist slightly.
"Spatial Ring…"
With it, hunting would become easier.
He could collect far more materials.
Earn more money.
Grow stronger faster.
The wind picked up as Ronan began walking toward the dark outskirts of the city.
His next hunt had already begun.
And somewhere in the shadows of the ruined industrial zone…
A pair of glowing eyes slowly opened.
The Shadow Fang Panther was waiting.
Unaware that a new hunter had already set his sights on it.
And this hunter…
Was far more dangerous than it looked.
