Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 – Nest of Shadows

Chapter 16 – Nest of Shadows

The ruined industrial zone was colder than the rest of the city.

A dry wind moved between the silent factories, carrying dust and the faint scent of rust. Long lines of broken buildings stretched into the darkness like the remains of a forgotten civilization.

Ronan walked carefully along the cracked asphalt road.

The map the merchant had given him was still fresh in his mind.

Sector 9.

According to the information, the Shadow Fang Panther nest was somewhere inside the old factory district.

Ronan stopped beside a collapsed metal fence and observed the area.

The factory ahead of him was enormous.

Its roof had partially fallen, and the main gate hung loosely from broken hinges. Inside, rows of abandoned machines formed long shadows across the floor.

Perfect hunting ground for a predator.

Ronan stepped forward.

The moment he entered the factory yard, the atmosphere changed.

The wind stopped.

The silence became heavier.

His instincts immediately warned him.

Something was watching.

Ronan slowly reached for the dagger at his waist.

The iron blade felt light in his hand.

Not ideal for fighting a creature like a Shadow Fang Panther… but it would have to be enough.

He crouched and examined the ground.

Tracks.

Large paw prints pressed into the dust.

Fresh.

Ronan followed them toward the broken entrance of the factory.

A few meters ahead, something else appeared.

A body.

A hunter lay against the wall, half buried under fallen debris. The armor was torn open, and deep claw marks ran across the metal chest plate.

Ronan approached cautiously.

The man's equipment looked expensive.

A professional hunter.

Which meant the merchant's story was true.

A team had come here.

And they had failed.

Ronan's eyes moved to the ground around the corpse.

More tracks.

Not just one set.

Two.

Maybe three.

"So it wasn't just one panther," Ronan murmured.

That made the mission significantly more dangerous.

But it also explained why the previous hunters never returned.

Ronan stood up again and slowly walked inside the factory.

The interior was darker.

Moonlight slipped through holes in the roof, creating pale lines across the dusty floor. Old conveyor belts and broken machines filled the massive hall.

Every step echoed softly.

Ronan moved carefully between the machines.

His senses remained sharp.

Then—

A faint sound.

Metal shifted somewhere above him.

Ronan immediately stepped back.

A dark shape dropped from the ceiling.

BOOM.

The creature landed heavily on the ground where Ronan had stood moments earlier.

Dust rose into the air.

Ronan raised his dagger.

The creature slowly lifted its head.

Silver eyes glowed in the darkness.

The Shadow Fang Panther.

Up close, the monster was even larger than Ronan expected. Its dark fur blended perfectly with the shadows around it, making its body difficult to follow.

Long curved fangs extended from its jaws.

Every muscle in its body moved with controlled power.

The panther stared at Ronan silently.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Then the monster began circling him.

Its steps were light.

Almost soundless.

Ronan adjusted his stance.

He had fought goblins before.

This was different.

This creature was intelligent.

It wasn't rushing into battle.

It was studying him.

Analyzing him.

The panther suddenly disappeared.

Ronan's eyes sharpened.

Fast.

Extremely fast.

A black blur rushed toward him.

Ronan reacted instantly.

CLANG.

His dagger barely intercepted the incoming claws.

The impact forced him backward.

The panther landed several meters away again.

Watching.

Testing.

Ronan steadied his breathing.

"Faster than I expected."

A faint blue light appeared in his vision.

The System.

Enemy Detected

Species: Shadow Fang Panther

Threat Level: High

Speed: Very High

Recommended Strategy: Target vital points

Ronan's grip tightened.

"Vital points… easier said than done."

The panther attacked again.

This time Ronan didn't retreat.

Instead, he stepped forward.

The unexpected movement disrupted the monster's timing.

Ronan twisted his body and slashed with his dagger.

The blade cut across the panther's side.

A thin line of dark blood appeared.

The creature leapt backward immediately.

Its silver eyes narrowed.

Now it was serious.

The playful curiosity had disappeared.

Ronan noticed something else.

The panther hadn't used its full strength yet.

It was still testing.

Suddenly—

A low growl echoed from the darkness behind him.

Ronan froze.

Another pair of glowing eyes appeared between the machines.

Then another.

Three.

Three Shadow Fang Panthers slowly emerged from the shadows.

Ronan understood the situation instantly.

This wasn't just a hunting ground.

It was their nest.

The first panther stepped forward again.

The others spread out.

They were surrounding him.

Ronan exhaled slowly.

Three elite monsters.

Even experienced hunter teams would struggle against that.

But Ronan didn't panic.

Instead, a faint smile appeared on his face.

Because the System window appeared once more.

Combat Condition Updated

Multiple Enemies Detected

Adaptive Response Activated

Reaction Speed Increased

Ronan rolled his shoulders slightly.

"Good timing."

The panthers moved at the same moment.

Three shadows rushed toward him.

Claws flashed through the air.

Ronan shifted his position quickly.

One attack missed.

Another barely scraped his coat.

The third came from behind.

Ronan spun around and drove his dagger forward.

The blade struck the first panther's shoulder again.

The monster roared and jumped back.

The other two stopped for a moment.

Now they were more cautious.

Ronan used that brief pause to reposition himself.

If they attacked together again, the fight would become impossible.

He needed to separate them.

Slowly, Ronan moved toward a narrow corridor between two large machines.

The space was tight.

Only one panther could attack him at a time.

The predators followed him.

Their eyes glowed in the darkness.

Waiting.

Hunting.

Ronan raised his dagger again.

"Come."

The first panther lunged.

Ronan stepped aside and drove the dagger toward its neck.

The monster twisted away at the last moment.

But the attack forced it backward.

The other panthers hesitated.

Their prey wasn't as weak as they expected.

Ronan's breathing remained steady.

The fight had only just begun.

And deep inside the ruined factory, the shadows continued to move.

Because somewhere beyond the broken machines…

Something even larger was slowly waking up.
