Chapter 14: Into the Wild Shadows
The silence in the Council Hall was broken not by words, but by the sudden, sharp sound of a wolf's howl in the distance. The Elders looked at each other in confusion, their power momentarily shaken by the Alpha's defiance.
"You have made your choice, Alpha," the High Elder hissed, his voice trembling with rage. "But remember, once you step out of these doors, you are no longer one of us. You will be hunted."
The protagonist Alpha didn't wait for a second warning. He grabbed the Omega's hand, his grip firm and warm, a stark contrast to the cold marble of the hall. "Run," he whispered.
They burst through the heavy oak doors, sprinting past the guards who were too stunned to stop them. The cold night air of the forest hit their faces, smelling of pine and freedom. Behind them, the sounds of the pack mobilizing began to echo.
They ran until their lungs burned and the moon was high above the canopy. Finally, in the safety of a hidden cave near the waterfall, they stopped. The Omega collapsed against the stone wall, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
"Why?" she choked out, looking at him with wide, tearful eyes. "You gave up everything. Your pack, your home... for a broken Omega like me."
The Alpha knelt before her, his golden eyes glowing in the dark. He reached out, gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "I didn't give up my home," he said softly. "My home isn't a pack or a title anymore. It's wherever you are."
But as they shared that moment of peace, a low growl vibrated through the forest outside. The hunt had begun.
