Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Mystery of the Locket

It was late night. No one could sleep. Everyone was thinking about the mystery of Shanta Devi's locket.

Anvesha kept thinking—who was that little girl? And how would Shanta Devi save her?

Suddenly Shanta Devi came to Anvesha's room. In her hand, an old photograph.

"Look at this photo," Shanta Devi said.

Anvesha looked at the photo. Black and white picture. A girl. Wearing a frock. A locket around her neck. That locket—the one around Shanta Devi's neck!

"This is me. In childhood. And this woman holding me in her lap—she is the woman who rescued me when I was lost."

Anvesha stared at the photo. The woman's face was unclear. But around her neck was a locket—just like Shanta Devi's!

"You're saying that woman also had a locket around her neck?"

Shanta Devi nodded. "Yes. Just like mine. But her locket was gold. Mine is silver."

Anvesha couldn't understand. What was this mystery?

Just then, her forehead started burning. She closed her eyes—

She saw—a girl. Grown up now. A gold locket around her neck. And in front stood another girl—Shanta Devi! In childhood. A silver locket around her neck. Both looked alike!

Anvesha opened her eyes and stared blankly.

"What did you see?" Shanta Devi asked.

Anvesha said in a trembling voice, "That woman... who saved you... did she have a daughter?"

Shanta Devi froze. "What do you mean?"

"I saw—a girl. A gold locket around her neck. And you in childhood. That girl had many similarities with you."

Shanta Devi suddenly screamed. "No! No! This can't be true!"

Arnab and Ayaan rushed in. "What happened?"

Shanta Devi said crying, "I had a sister. A younger sister. We were very small. Once she got lost in a fair. And was never found."

Everyone was stunned.

Shanta Devi spoke again, "Mother used to say—she also had a locket around her neck. Gold. Mine was silver. Father had made two lockets for us."

Anvesha understood. That woman, who saved Shanta Devi—was she Shanta Devi's lost sister? And that little girl—whom Shanta Devi would save—was she that sister's daughter?

The mystery was becoming more and more complex.

---

The next morning, Anvesha decided—she would find that little girl. Who had appeared in her vision. If they could actually find Shanta Devi's sister?

Ayaan said, "I'll go with you."

Arnab also said, "I'll go too. Searching for my mother's sister—this is also my responsibility."

The three set out for that place, where Anvesha had seen that girl in her vision.

The journey was long. Village after village. City after city. But Anvesha was sure—they had to find that girl.

Suddenly the car stopped at a village crossroads. Anvesha got out and looked around. This was that place! That road, that crossroads she had seen in her vision!

And then, in the distance, they saw—a little girl. Wearing a red dress. Running. A dog chasing her!

"There she is!" Anvesha shouted.

The three ran towards the girl. But from a distance, they saw—the girl fell. The dog was approaching. And then a woman rushed and picked up the girl in her lap.

Anvesha stopped. Around that woman's neck—a gold locket!
