Hazel stood outside the apartment door, her hands trembling.
She had waited until they returned home before confronting her sister. The silence between them during the drive had been unbearable.
Now she couldn't hold it in anymore.
"Abi… why did you do that?"
Abi slowly removed her heels and placed them by the wall as if nothing important had happened.
"Do what?" she asked casually.
Hazel stared at her in disbelief.
"You lied about me in front of Luca's family."
Abi turned around slowly.
And for the first time in years… she didn't pretend.
Her eyes were cold.
"Because someone needed to say the truth."
Hazel's voice shook.
"That wasn't the truth."
Abi laughed softly.
"Oh Hazel… you're still so naive."
The words cut deep.
Hazel stepped closer.
"I'm your sister. Why would you want to hurt me like this?"
Abi's expression suddenly hardened.
"Because I'm tired of living in your shadow."
Hazel froze.
Abi continued, years of bitterness pouring out.
"You've always taken everything that should have been mine."
"What are you talking about?" Hazel whispered.
Abi's voice rose.
"Luca!"
The name echoed through the room.
"He was supposed to be mine," Abi said.
Hazel shook her head in shock.
"You're being ridiculous."
"No," Abi snapped. "You're the greedy one. You always act innocent while stealing the attention meant for me."
Tears filled Hazel's eyes.
"I never tried to steal anything from you."
Abi stepped closer.
"But you did. Your quiet little act makes everyone feel sorry for you."
Her voice became cruel.
"You stole my spotlight. My admiration. And now you think you can take Luca too?"
Hazel felt like her heart was breaking.
"He chose me," she said softly.
Abi's smile turned dark.
"Well I'm not backing down."
She leaned closer.
"I will take him back, Hazel. And this time I won't pretend to be the good sister."
The words felt like knives.
Hazel realized something terrifying in that moment.
The sister she loved…
Was gone.
Without another word, Hazel grabbed her bag and walked out of the apartment.
---
Later that evening, Hazel sat quietly in a small café.
Her phone rang.
The name on the screen surprised her.
Valeria.
Hazel hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
Valeria's calm voice came through the phone.
"Hazel, we need to talk."
Hazel's chest tightened.
"About what?"
"About everything."
---
An hour later, Hazel arrived at Valeria's house.
The atmosphere there felt strangely peaceful.
Valeria poured two cups of tea and gestured for Hazel to sit.
For a while, neither of them spoke.
Then Valeria looked at her carefully.
"Did you really lie to my family?"
Hazel's eyes immediately filled with tears.
"No," she whispered.
Valeria studied her face.
"Tell me the truth."
Hazel took a deep breath.
"I've never tried to deceive anyone."
Valeria leaned back slightly.
"Then why would your sister say those things?"
Hazel looked down.
"I don't know anymore."
Her voice broke.
"Abi used to be the only person I trusted."
For a moment, Valeria felt something close to anger.
Not at Hazel.
At Abi.
She stood up and walked to the window before speaking again.
"You shouldn't stay in the same house with someone who wants to destroy you."
Hazel looked up slowly.
Valeria turned back toward her.
"You can stay here."
Hazel blinked in surprise.
"With you?"
Valeria nodded.
"Until things calm down."
Hazel felt a wave of relief wash over her.
"Thank you," she whispered.
But Valeria's thoughts were elsewhere.
Watching Hazel now… she was more convinced than ever.
This girl was not the kind of person Abi described.
And if Abi continued hurting her like this…
Valeria might finally reveal the secret she had kept hidden for years.
