Chapter 23 - the voice inside

The chaos from the classroom incident refused to settle, even hours later. The school corridors, usually filled with noise and laughter, now carried a strange silence, as if everyone could feel that something was wrong but couldn't explain it. Students whispered in corners, teachers tried to calm the situation, and rumors spread faster than truth. But for Aarav, none of it mattered. Because the real chaos wasn't outside—it was inside him.

He stood near the washroom mirror, staring at his own reflection. His face looked normal. Calm. Controlled. But his eyes… they didn't feel like his own anymore. There was something behind them, something watching, waiting. Aarav splashed water on his face, trying to shake off the feeling, but the moment he looked up again, a faint whisper echoed in his mind.

"You can't escape me…"

Aarav froze. His breath hitched as his fingers tightened around the sink. That voice—it wasn't outside. It wasn't real. And that's what made it worse. It was coming from within him.

"Stop…" he muttered under his breath, closing his eyes tightly. "Just stop…"

But the silence that followed felt heavier than the voice itself.

Outside, Meera and Rayan waited, both unusually quiet. Rayan tried to crack a joke earlier, something about "ghost attendance," but even he couldn't laugh at his own words. The tension was too thick. Meera's eyes stayed fixed on the washroom door, her instincts screaming that something wasn't right. Aarav had been acting different ever since the incident—too distant, too controlled, like he was forcing himself to stay normal.

When Aarav finally stepped out, he looked the same—but felt completely different.

"You okay?" Rayan asked, trying to sound casual.

Aarav nodded instantly. "Yeah. Just tired."

It was a perfect answer. Too perfect.

Meera didn't respond. She simply looked at him, her gaze sharp, searching. Aarav avoided her eyes. That was enough for her to know—something was wrong.

Before she could say anything, Zippu appeared beside them, his glow faint but unstable. That alone was enough to confirm their fears.

"This isn't good," Zippu said quietly, his usual playful tone completely gone. "The shadow… it's evolving faster than I expected."

Rayan frowned. "Okay, I really don't like how you say things like that so casually."

Aarav clenched his fists. "Then fix it."

Zippu looked at him, serious. "It's not something I can fix. It's not just a shadow anymore, Aarav. It's becoming a part of you."

For a moment, everything went silent.

Aarav's expression didn't change—but inside, something cracked.

Suddenly, the lights above them flickered again. Not like before. This time, it felt… connected. The air grew heavy, and a strange pressure built around them. Rayan stepped back instinctively.

"Aarav…?"

Aarav didn't respond.

His head tilted slightly downward, his breathing uneven. His shadow stretched unnaturally across the floor, moving a second too late… like it was deciding its own actions.

"Aarav!" Meera grabbed his arm.

And that's when it happened.

For a brief second—just a second—Aarav's eyes turned darker. Not completely black… but wrong. Empty.

The air around them pulsed. A nearby chair slid across the floor on its own. The windows rattled slightly.

Rayan's voice dropped to a whisper. "That's… not normal…"

Aarav suddenly stepped back, as if waking up from something. His breathing turned rapid, almost panicked. "I… I didn't do that…"

Zippu's expression hardened. "You didn't. But it did."

Aarav looked at his own hands like they didn't belong to him anymore. Fear—real, raw fear—filled his eyes for the first time.

"What if I lose control?" he said quietly. "What if… I hurt you?"

For a second, no one answered.

Then Meera stepped forward. Her grip on his arm tightened, not out of fear—but determination.

"Then we'll stop you," she said, her voice steady. "Together."

Rayan nodded quickly, forcing a small smile. "Yeah… and I'll be the one to knock you out first, just saying."

Aarav almost smiled. Almost.

But the fear didn't leave.

That night, Aarav stood alone again, staring into the mirror of his room. The silence around him felt heavier than ever before. Slowly, he lifted his head and looked at his reflection.

For a moment, everything was normal.

And then—

The reflection smiled.

Aarav didn't.

That smile… wasn't his...
